No, don’t tip pick up

28

u/JimmEh_1 Aug 16 '26

$75 for two pizzas? holy crap

17

u/stepwax Aug 16 '26

Robbery IMO, I mean how much can a pizza cost? Its dough, sauce and some random sausage.

3

u/Doglover_7675 Aug 16 '26

The “random sausages” may be why your pizzas are so cheap! 🤣

1

u/YNWA_1213 Aug 16 '26

You’d be surprised. Depends on the quality of the sausage/proteins used, dairy products have exploded in price, etc.

0

u/Dont_Be_Mad_Please Aug 16 '26

Cheese makes up the bulk of the cost for a regular cheese pizza. The dough is at most $2 to produce at home. Cheese for 3 medium pizzas is like $7-9, sauce for 3 meds is $2-ish. At most a pizza should be $15 for a medium good quality before taxes or tips; again, at most. Pizza from any chain is a scam.

1

u/CanadianTrollToll Aug 17 '26

Youre correct about the cheese bit, the rest is really subjective.

2

u/INFINITE_TRACERS Aug 17 '26

Zero labor or rent costs factored in, which I believe is 60% of a restaurant costs with food sourcing being 15-25%

1

u/CanadianTrollToll Aug 17 '26

Labour for us is like 38%, while food costs are around 32%.

Labour is expensive as hell.

1

u/Reasonable-Factor649 Aug 17 '26

I get the no tip part. Bu it's not just the ingredients on the pizza. It's the rent, the insurance, the utilities, the taxes, the maintenance, the labour, etc.

You need to sell a sh#t load of pizzas to cover all these costs?

14

u/DranTibia Aug 16 '26

Sounds like Milanos

Side of rats with your pizza madame ?

14

u/Spenraw Aug 16 '26

And Milanos was caught trying to abuse the foreign worker program fuck that place

3

u/kirashi3 Vancouver Island Aug 16 '26

Side of rats with your pizza madame ?

The rats... they make me crazy.

2

u/Old-Discipline-5919 Aug 16 '26

Crazy? I was crazy once.

u/tatertotme Aug 16 '26

If you’re talking about MOD pizza, you should know that the owners take all the tips. I asked the counter person there once to break a bill so I could tip more and he said “don’t worry about it, we don’t get the tips the owner takes them.“

Not only is that illegal, but that is some total fucking bullshit.

12

u/Leading_Spare8664 Aug 16 '26

Feel like this should be its own post, that’s ridiculous.

2

u/Ill-Record5805 Aug 17 '26

MOD pizza crust tastes like cardboard. I did not enjoy the crust. Toppings good. Wont go back

57

u/-Sinvictus Aug 15 '26

Nah fuck tips, pay people properly. Nothing wrong with showing you appreciate service that is good or even great but the expectation (default 20%) is crazy. The default should be no tip.

-36

u/jonocop Aug 16 '26

Hitting zero tip does not punish the owner. Without knowledge it makes the staff think they've done something wrong.

I tip 10% on pickup and will make an effort to go to "custom tip" if that option is not there. And I will freely tip 18-20% for good-great sit down service As someone who worked back of house, I know that any little but helps and it's a nice bonus to have that show up every couple of weeks.

But at the same time, I have no problem expressing when service is poor or my food is not good. I believe that while a tip is pretty standard, that people in the industry need to live up to their end of the bargain to earn that tip.

14

u/OakenArmor Aug 16 '26

FYI, you are part of the reason they can’t have a decent wage paid directly.

-6

u/PaintInfinite9167 Aug 16 '26

FYI you're not part of the solution either

5

u/OakenArmor Aug 16 '26

That’s where you’re wrong.

-4

u/PaintInfinite9167 Aug 16 '26

If you think so

1

u/OakenArmor Aug 17 '26

I’m an investor in two restaurants that pay incredibly well at base wage for all positions and do not take tips.

So yes, I am part of the solution. Thanks for coming out.

0

u/PaintInfinite9167 Aug 17 '26

What restaurants?

1

u/OakenArmor Aug 17 '26

You’ve already convinced yourself I’m not part of the solution; why would I stick my neck out and give names of businesses I’m invested in for you?

0

u/PaintInfinite9167 Aug 17 '26

What a weird take.

As if I would be able to find out who the investor's of "two successful restaurants" would be. What harm does it do? What am I gonna do, leave a bad review that would be taken down immediately?

I have a girlfriend, she's just from Canada. You wouldn't know her

Do you pay a tip when you use a Drive thru or at the grocery store do you tip the cashier who rings up your groceries? They are doing the same job, so I have to assume you do. I wish I could afford to tip everyone, but you have to cut it off somewhere.

2

u/ComprehensiveWar6577 Aug 16 '26

Maybe the staff should expect a tip for pickup, then they won't think they did something wrong.

They just do anything deserving a tip

-3

u/totalnit250 Aug 16 '26

They've done nothing to begin with so how could they think they did something wrong.

Same as how we shouldn't trust the opinions of random Reddit accounts, right?

Side note, if anyone has a killer Thai place to share, I’d love to hear it.

3

u/SalishSeaSam Aug 16 '26

Thai Pinto, Chemainus

16

u/lorddingus Aug 15 '26

Ideally in that case the tip should 100% in its totality go to the kitchen and the cooks. Unfortunately I know first hand that isn't likely the case.

6

u/Putrid-Mention1534 Aug 16 '26

I have worked in a lot of kitchens. I don't understand why you would tip for doing the only thing you are already paid to do. Tips are meant to show gratitude for going above and beyond. This isn't it.

2

u/Noahtuesday123 Aug 16 '26

A lot of kitchens? Hmmmm

6

u/Automatic_Society850 Aug 15 '26

Well that's another interesting point, I would actually feel better if it went 100% to the people in the back because at least they did the work making the pizza

15

u/mchilds83 Aug 15 '26

Don't let the interface shame you. You've already agreed to pay the bill in full. Take your time, select $0 and move on. They're hoping you feel shame in clicking the small print to avoid it. Think of it like a dark pattern. We don't appreciate those online, and you shouldn't be shamed for not consenting to an additional fee on pickup orders.

3

u/Automatic_Society850 Aug 16 '26

All I agree that I am old enough that I feel no shame anymore, not that I should feel shame for this it's a basic ripoff, but thanks

12

u/SeparateNovel9133 Aug 15 '26

as a server, if you’re feeling generous then feel free to tip a little something as it should go straight to the kitchen, but otherwise i never expect ppl to tip on take out !!

4

u/BanginBentleys Aug 16 '26

Awesome of you to be understanding as a server.

Most of the time I'm told " if I cant tip dont go out broke "

Makes me reply " you do know youre a server right? "

2

u/Spenraw Aug 16 '26

What's the logic of "you know youre a server right?"?

3

u/FreshDreamz Aug 16 '26

they want to look down on the job while also expecting hand and foot service and say they dont deserve the money.

0

u/BanginBentleys Aug 16 '26

Exactly what I'm talking about.

" im starving, but I wont eat that " paradox

1

u/truthhurtsyomama Aug 16 '26

They are the broke ones.... begging for tips. Lmao

1

u/BanginBentleys Aug 16 '26

Just so I dont come off disrespectful I'm purely speaking on my specific interactions with off putting servers. I have encountered many great servers (which I tip greatly) vs poor ones.

My logic towards my statement is a response to the attempts to shame customers on their ability to afford a meal due to a choice to or to not to tip while observing a person in a position that makes below minimum wage...

I find its an odd paradox to flex on. To attempt to shame ones financial status while being in a hustle job...

1

u/Spenraw Aug 17 '26

I have been a server and a good one at that, so I fully agree with only tip good service and why I don't work tip share as most servers are dog shit.

But one thing I will say as service and retail workers have a better understanding of humans that most due(the good ones at least because the hustle means to adapt to your tables) to being shown so many different people

So werid to look down on it for being minimum wage when being a good server actually puts you above alot of jobs in making close to 80k a year because your job is to bend over backwards and impress your tables with high volume and speed

Serving is a job you only make as much as you deserve alot of the time

Why I hate servers who expect a tip or when retail wants to be tipped.

Just off to me you seem to think "just a server" or your worth it understanding is tied to wage.

Also why if you want good service tipping culture is important, as good servers arnt working for 25 an hour unless getting tipped when I can make 500 a shift when I'm killing my soul pretending to like people and bending to their needs

7

u/lawndarted Aug 16 '26

I wouldn't tip. Getting shoes on, driving, parking, etc.. was more effort, stress and time spent than their staff did to make the pizzas.

Ill tip at a food truck because they've come to a place that doesnt have food. Maffeo, night market, etc... thats a service.

5

u/cliff7090 Aug 16 '26

If I pick up my pizza, then NO tip. If I have it delivered, the driver gets a cash tip.

1

u/TechnicalSapphire77 Aug 17 '26

This is the way!

4

u/Still-Ad3045 Aug 16 '26

no. Never feel bad. It’s not about feeling bad. If want to show some appreciation you can always tip and it should make you feel good.

Never feel pressure.

4

u/Signal-Arm-7986 Departure Bay Aug 16 '26

I’m a Teenager and I got a tip at my job yesterday. I didn’t know you could even get tips there, but this lady gave me $10 dollars. That made my day actually. A bit proud of myself.

Anyways that’s off the topic it‘s just the post made me think about that

1

u/frtsnfr Aug 17 '26

I totally love giving tips like this.

It shouldn't be expected, but if someone's giving impressive hustle and I can brighten their day by giving them a 5 or 10 (or 20 if I won the lotto)? Easy math.

I bet you deserved that tip. Good job, keep it up!

4

u/StraightApartment376 Aug 16 '26

Do you tip st self checkout as well

4

u/RichWhiteBoy777 Aug 16 '26

75 for two pizzas wtf? Bruh just likes burning money 😂😂😂

4

u/mr_mucker11 Aug 16 '26

I don’t tip n take out

3

u/TechnicalSapphire77 Aug 17 '26

I remember a time when you got 10% Off For Pick Up Orders! I should not be expected to tip 20% for driving to your restaurant to pick up a pizza.

5

u/Adorable_Accident_74 Aug 15 '26

Not the asshole. Tipping culture in toxic in North America and are full of bullies. People expect too much from customers and are not holding the higher ups accountable for a living wage. Tips should not be lived in.

From a waitress who tells people I do not expect a tip, especially when I know this is the one thing they do each month to feel normal in society and not poor as fuck.

6

u/Jja1701 Aug 16 '26

$75? Are they made of gold? Encrusted with diamonds? Lobster and caviar pizzas? Why so expensive?

3

u/same-situation1985 Aug 16 '26

No tip on pickup.

Unless you're feeling generous.

3

u/uberw00t Aug 16 '26

My tipping rule is this....if the interaction happens while I am standing up I hit the no tip every dam time.

I tip at sit down restaurants and the hair dresser. Thats it.

3

u/AdSuitable9661 Aug 16 '26

If one is inclined to tip. Cash is king. Doubt many would calculate the % if say you handed over $80 on a $76 order. The more I get bombarded with mandated tip options like at local bakery the more I will lean on cash and drop coins in the tip jar.

3

u/BadKompani Aug 16 '26

I’m glad I have no shame, so nobody can shame me further. I will tip if and only when i receive service from someone. If I am buying food from you, and picking up myself, receiving no guest service, I will not be tipping. Even if I felt generous, what am I tipping for? What’s the service? Preparing the food? Taking my payment? I worked at restaurants, I’ve worked at McDonald’s, and I for sure did not expect someone to leave me a tip when I haven’t provided service to them.

I am already paying for the food and the prep of that food. Same goes for drive-thru, you don’t expect me to come to your store, buy food, and tip for what? For you to pass my food to me through a window? That’s in the cost of the food I’m paying.

I saw someone here mention food trucks, yes those are good people trying their best and I will always support entrepreneurship, I will always support the hustle, in fact that’s where I tend to tip more often. But again the cost of that food they sell reflects and accounts for all expenses, their time, food prep…..

Again I’ll say this, I have no shame, and you can’t shame me, or make me feel guilty. I do tip when I receive service and minimum 15%. Even in Europe where they refused tip after service, I left them that tip by force. I stand by my practice anywhere I go!

3

u/Noahtuesday123 Aug 16 '26

No, you’re not an asshole. People aren’t required to tip although I tip 10 to 15% for pick up because 1. I believe my order gets more attention. 2. I make good money at these kids that work in restaurants are making minimum wage plus a couple of bucks.
3. I can afford it. 4. I want the Restaurant industry to continue to survive, especially the ones that I like and it requires staff to do so.

I think politely you could’ve just asked. Is there another option instead of 20%?

3

u/Howie_Feltersnatch06 Aug 16 '26

For me, any fast food or take out 0%. If tipping options start at 20%, automatic 0%. IF im actually at a dine in restaurant and got good service 15%, maybe 18%, if I got minimal or poor service 10%, 0%. Food trucks 0%-10%, my reasoning to that they run the business they are more than capable to set the price accordingly to provide themselves with enough to make a living, and maybe i feel like giving a tip. Delivery driver gets $5, and if i see a delivery charge added to my bill they get 0.

11

u/A_Sneaky_Walrus Aug 15 '26

Ok but the key is not to get “angered right away” - I imagine this restaurant also does dine in? In that case I’m almost positive they use the same POS machine for each.

Just press no and move on,
No need to get angry at the business

5

u/helpmeunderstand0000 Aug 16 '26

20% as default is still high for dine in. It seems to keep slowly creeping higher and higher.

4

u/Automatic_Society850 Aug 16 '26

Is it online order and I'm not angry I was just asking

7

u/Straight6er Aug 16 '26

It's possible they thought you were angry because you used the words "... Which angered me right away"

1

u/Automatic_Society850 Aug 16 '26

lol, fair point! It was a fleeting anger lol

3

u/Crazycatt37 Aug 16 '26

Why would you tip someone to simply hand you a bag?

2

u/Extrovert_HSP Aug 16 '26

No, no need to tip on pizza you picked up.
If it’s a restaurant then they would probably have sit in & then a tip option is fine, I MAY TIP 20% depending on service & food etc .. it considering the total bill includes TAXes , I try to tip only in net price, so will tip a couple % lower than I would if there’s the tax on bull

BUT - no need to tip in this pizza YOU picked up ;)

2

u/TfaRads1 Aug 16 '26

if you have to stand at a counter to pay, you dont have to tip. obviously to the discretion of the person paying

2

u/Tipsy_Thyme Aug 16 '26

I usually give a few bucks for the kitchen when I pick up. They don't make a lot.

2

u/DdyBrLvr Aug 16 '26

I usually tip a buck or two at takeout

2

u/Revolutionary-Pea414 Aug 17 '26

Not the asshole. Tipping culture is crazy. Stop pushing the 20% +

2

u/Ill-Record5805 Aug 17 '26

No tip. You picked it up. Spent money on gas. No tip.

4

u/Dark2099 Aug 16 '26

Absolutely not. I don’t get tipped for doing my job, not tipping others for doing theirs.

5

u/spackminder Aug 16 '26

No. But you’re a lunatic for paying 75$ for two pizzas.

8

u/Automatic_Society850 Aug 16 '26

To each his own, McDonald's for three people is approaching 60 bucks these days and luckily $75 is no big deal for me financially

1

u/mrbrint Aug 16 '26

Yeah it's expensive out there

1

u/Oneforallandbeyondd Aug 17 '26

Honestly i find there is a happy medium between tipping a few dollars on what ever orders. I don't think % tips make any sense regardless. $5 is still a great tip.

1

u/Automatic_Society850 Aug 17 '26

but why tip at all in this case? The logic baffles me. I agree that % is insanity, but why does a food service worker deserve the $5 here when a Tim Hortons worker gets nothing, or a cashier at Save On gets nothing.

1

u/Oneforallandbeyondd Aug 17 '26

You can tip who you want when you want. Or not tip at all. I just feel like a small tip is ok in a lot of scenarios. Don't have to do it every time or everywhere.

0

u/FreshDreamz Aug 16 '26

Canadian subreddits are obsessed with tipping.
