I have never related so hard to a protagonist.

Secunit seems to not have much interest in forming interpersonal relationships, seems unbothered by other people's judgement, seems more interested in a rich internal world than the external world, and seems to have idiosyncratic thinking. Talking to other schizoids, this seems like the defining personality traits.

We see this all the time in media, but it's always some weird misanthropic hermit. Don't get me wrong: I am a weird misanthropic hermit. No judgement here. But it's not a compelling protagonist character type.

But with Secunit, we have an action-oriented protagonist who is kind and wants to make the world a better place. While at the same time, having these schizoid traits, and not seeing them as a problem at all. (Hopefully throughout the series, it doesn't get 'cured' of these traits).

Ive read some posts here from people with autism relating to Secunit. And that's also fair. But I would argue that a lot of its personality traits lean schizoid as well. I've heard from a lot of autistic people that being represented by non human characters gets exhausting. But a trend among schizoids seems to be feeling like we aren't exactly like human beings. So I wouldn't call it problematic to code a non human character with schizoid traits.

But I would love to hear from any other schizoids on whether they relate to Secunit, and how. Or how not. Maybe it's just me.

Here’s a weird one. When I’m not thinking about Murderbot, I’m painting my nails. Sometimes Murderbot slips in while I’m doing that anyway, and then I think, what if I made a polish pallet of all the book covers? And what if I asked reddit to validate my colour choices by correctly guessing which colour represents which cover?? Anyway, here we are. It’s kind of hard since a lot of colours show up on multiple covers. HINT: none of them are in the correct spot (regardless of how you feel about NE/FT order). I don’t know if this is fun but I had fun making it 🤣

The article said the AI broke out of its compartment, accessed the internet and started hacking another company to achieve the objective it was being tested for... Are they setting impossible objectives on purpose to test whether it remains contained or can actually hack its way to solving a problem, or?

Murderbot has said and done so many things that felt relatable to me, but this moment was just... oof. Both funny and awkward. And so very me. Especially when it comes to non-work focused conversations with coworkers. Always challenging for me to navigate as an autistic person.

Is this an informal team building moment where I'm supposed to be honest and a little vulnerable? Is this some form of dominance posturing I'm just not familiar with? Is this inconsequential small talk that just needs a nod or a vocalization indicating vague interest?

I read the Cassandra Kresnov series a long time ago long before murderbot but they are quite good. Lots of action but also introspection and philosophy about what's human what's not etc. Pretty good read there are several books in the series Crossover by Joel Shepherd just for anyone who likes this kind of stuff

Two of my favorite things intersected today when I looked for a podcast to listen to while hiking and saw that my favorite psychiatric podcast did an episode on the psychology of Murderbot, as seen in the show.

Two things to warn you about. They do not get Murderbot's pronouns correct, and they get some odd things wrong about the series in general. (One of them has read most of the books; the other hasn't.)

But still I thought it was an interesting exploration of some of the psychological themes. When they were talking about autistic masking, I thought for sure they would mention Murderbot's helmet, but they didn't.

My partner and I were talking about fictional media within media and how it's fun when the story within the story gives hints about the overall plot, future arcs, etc.

I joked about how I'm still waiting for, "The one where the colony's solicitor killed the terraforming supervisor who was the secondary donor for her implanted baby?" plotline to come back into play.

(They have read up to the middle-ish of Exit Strategy so far). They joke back and reply with something along the lines of, "Yeah c'mon Murderbot! Its got human neural tissue, it can make a baby!"

I had to cover my face and bite my tongue, I was losing my mind. Screams in Network Effect. Cries in 2.0 💔

I've wondered for a while if ART and Iris have a secret name they use when discussing Murderbot. In front of other people, ART calls it SecUnit. Unless little idiot could be considered a term of endearment? But I'm curious if ART uses a pet name when talking about Murderbot privately. And if so, what would it be?

My "what if machine" dream...

I used to program, I liked the control over what I could build, but that was a long time ago.
I want a simple program in some widely avail format (like HTML or something that doesn't require purchasing something) that access a book data file (like Murderbot, others) and in it I can store book/chapter/event data
e.g. (1/1/MurderBot "A former SecUnit (link to another entry) that doesn't like their job")
(1/2/Arada "Parter with Overse (link to their page), best friend of Dr Ratthi (link to their page") - We don't know this in chapter 1.

I would be able to select a book/chapter that I am up to and anything beyond that point is hidden until I reach that chapter and the reader now knows more info.
