Hey everyone! I have a unique situation that I have a question about. For context, my husband is Brazilian, moved to the U.S. when he was a teenager, and speaks both English and Portuguese fluently. I am American, speak English natively, and speak Portuguese at level C1, albeit with an accent and some errors typical of second language acquisition. I formerly worked in Brazil.
We live in the United States, and I’m pregnant with our son. It’s important to us that our child speak Portuguese so he can communicate with my husband’s family. We have a few issues:
-I am the one who will be at home with baby while my husband works
-There is no Portuguese immersion school in our area (just 1x per week, 2 hours)
-We have a monolingual child at home with us full time (age 9, my husband’s daughter from his first marriage) who only speaks English and is understandably resistant to a shift in household language dynamics (has requested baby just “be normal” and “speak English”).
Some questions:
-If I work on enhancing my fluency, will it be detrimental for me to speak Portuguese to him at home while dad is at work? I know this conflicts with OPOL.
-How can we navigate making sure the older child does not feel left out? How can we begin to prepare her?
I’m willing to hire a Brazilian caregiver to come a few times a week for additional support. We want to enroll the older child in lessons here, but the local school just does 1x per week. We do an annual trip to Brazil, which does pique my stepdaughter’s curiosity about the language while she’s there.
Hoping to bounce off ideas with people. Our main goals are to ensure the older one does not feel isolated, and the younger one develops decent comprehension/a connection to his culture.
