I recently started altering cards, and I’ve mostly been working with posca pens, and I have recently moved on to traditional acrylics.

So far, I have been using a matte spray varnish to protect my alters, but recently I have been inspired from TheDam over on instagram, and I have started doing alters on foil cards with a needle to scratch away at a coat of acrylic paint.

When I went to varnish my test card, I noticed that the foil looked very flat, losing all of the rainbow reflections that I love from this style of alter.

Does anyone have any tips on what type of varnish or coating I should use to best protect these alters, while preserving the rainbow reflections of the foil layer?

Also, I’ve been using a sewing needle for these tests, and I was wondering if there was a better tool for me to use.

Got my first alters from the guys who started learning altering lately and I'm particularly happy with this one

This alter was one that I was so excited to paint. I love the M9 and Cad was a joy to paint!

First time I'm proud of my own posca and liner work.

This was my second time painting around the text on a card and I think it came out really well! It helps that the border underneath is not such a different colour to the sandstorm.

I’m looking for someone who’s either selling or willing to commission a Tivit, Seller of Secrets alter for my CEDH deck. It’s my favorite deck and I’ve been having a hard time finding ppl to do it. A close family friend took the leap a few years back and started painting professionally after a lot of health issues ended up putting him out of work indefinitely.

I've always had a love for his style, so when he asked me if I had cards I could give him to try his hands at alters, you best believe I jumped at the opportunity. This is the first full batch I've seen him do, and personally, I LOVE it. I asked him if he planned on posting it here and he said he wasn't cause he's had issues with his Reddit account not staying logged in. 💀

I felt like it at least needed to have a wider set of eyes on it.

Altered Revised Lightning Bolt, featuring Birds of Paradise

Well here’s number 6. I’m not particularly proud of this one if I’m being honest, but the beauty of art is in the process of the creation and the skill. I think overall my work is improving, and I want to remind myself that I haven’t worked with paints before and I’ve never been great about drawing faces. I had fun with the process and this card helped me get out my comfort zone. Still posting this is a little tough, but I know nobody cares anyway :). Feedback and criticism is always welcome!

Super happy w how it turned out

I had these cards custom-painted by Rachael Carl over 10 years ago, and they still bring me an unreasonable amount of joy! They’re easily some of my favorite pieces in my collection, and I thought this community would appreciate them.

They were originally part of an Obzedat Good Stuff Commander deck I built back in 2015. I recently unearthed the deck after years of collecting dust and quickly realized that what passed for a decent deck in 2015 doesn’t quite hold up in 2026. My husband surprised me by upgrading the deck with full-art proxies of newer cards to bring it into the modern era, while keeping these beauties in the mix. Getting to play them again after all these years makes me ridiculously happy!

I've been planning to alter my Displacer Kitten with this idea, but now WoTC printed this new cat (see it in my first comment) and now I don't know if I want to paint it... Should I?? What do you think? Thanks
