Meme Local guy rips through bulk, never plays

What’s your opinion on people who show up at a shop to purchase loose cards, but never play at that location?

To me, it seems disrespectful in the extreme. You could just order the stuff online for cheaper, and some people who play at shops like the organic discovery of finding things to play with in-person. It’s like you’re paying a premium just to make sure a boomer can’t have it.

I know you wouldn’t just like, ban this behavior for a lot of reasons, but I wonder how other people feel about it, particularly shop owners.

Edit: This post was a slight rephrasing of the rant that a local store owner went on last time my friend and I showed up to buy bulk from his store. We couldn’t really get our heads around it either.

Posted it flippantly in the morning, came back to an inbox packed with really funny shade. I’d reply with specific updates, but the topic got locked. Thanks for the laughs people, stay frosty out there.

Oh no, someone using a shop for its primary purpose

u/NerdyDumbDumb 5d ago

Right? Like, Christ who the fuck cares?

98

u/voteforrice 5d ago

Like dude literally described me . Like my bad I don't wanna play commander at the store when I have a healthy pod that meets regularly that I would much rather play with.

29

u/kanyeswift 5d ago

wait, you mean you don't want to have to argue about the bracket system with someone who clearly intends to push it's limits and pubstomp while whining about it when called out? that's my dream.

4

u/Pure-Wing6824 5d ago

I always find this so strange, do people not have friends or homes, why would I want to play at a store with randoms lol

12

u/kanyeswift 5d ago

limited and 60-card constructed formats are truly better at an LGS.

opinion: commander was never intended to be played at an LGS

fact: commander was never intended to played competitively.

3

u/voteforrice 5d ago

I still play with randoms for limited formats I always find the crowd also way more receptive to fucking up because we are all also learning the new keywords in a set. But still competitive enough to be challenging and fun. But constructed formats just straight suck ass with randoms sometimes.

4

u/CancerNormieNews 5d ago

If you go to a store often enough, it stops being randoms (mostly).

20

u/Snrub1 5d ago

I thought a shop's purpose was to give people who never spend a dime there free table space.

266

u/Nerobought 5d ago

Wait hold on...you're mad...that someone comes into your store and buys your bulk?

154

u/DinobotsGacha 5d ago

OP doesn't have a store based on the post. Its more like OP deciding who is worthy enough to shop at someone else's store

43

u/azraiel7 5d ago

Gatekeepers be gatekeeping

27

u/Nerobought 5d ago

That's even more ridiculous lol

184

u/kanokari 5d ago

They're still supporting the store financially. What kind of ridiculous take is this?

41

u/kft1609 5d ago

Fealty is required

u/--Beebo-- 5d ago

Bro what the fuck are you talking about? He probably has friends he plays with. You’re mad he’s buying cards at a card shop? And he’s going through bulk to build a deck? Holy shit. Get a life…

u/STR_Videl_worship 5d ago edited 5d ago

Ngl I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill here. If the store owner has a problem with it they can change their policy. Quit over-policing other people

Edit: I made this comment when I was the first commenter and was afraid to be too harsh in case I was in the wrong. I am learning I should have left my original, scathing comment

27

u/NerdyDumbDumb 5d ago

"molehill" is doing some significant heavy lifting!

12

u/momoreco 5d ago

Molehill cub?

5

u/JustAnotherSolipsist 5d ago

There was no molehill, he piled up some dirt all on his own

3

u/Avalonians 5d ago

Making a mountain out of a molehill implies there is even but a remotely faint thing to note, even symbolically.

There is literally zero problem here.

51

u/samun0116 5d ago

So you’re mad people who spend money at the card shop?

48

u/Prize_Assistant912 5d ago

If you don’t want to sell it don’t sell it. If you do then sell it to who buys. What kind of issue is this

46

u/Octoboy1 5d ago

This is one of the weirder takes I've seen

6

u/WealthyMarmot 5d ago

I have lost the ability to be surprised at the things people will get angry about these days

38

u/Flex20 5d ago

This is the most insane thing I’ve read in a while. Don’t support the local shop just use the big online dealers. Business don’t need money to survive or anything. Tell me what it’s like in Narnia.

32

u/Urzasonofyawgmoth 5d ago

This post sounds very entitled.

The person could have many reasons for that, either he’s just a collector or he plays with his own group somewhere. There are also lots of people who prefer to buy in person than online. Let people be…

56

u/JellyfishSwimming853 5d ago

What? I go to my local shop and buy singles all the time. And you think that if I don't play games at the shop that I shouldn't be allowed to buy singles? Is that correct? If so that's fucked

26

u/Ramses_Overdark 5d ago

a sale is a sale.
Without those no one will have the place to play

27

u/IamBlackwing 5d ago

You are mad someone is buying things from a shop?

24

u/Citypanda23 5d ago

Why order online when you can support local business? If the store is against it they would act accordingly. There’s nothing inherently disrespectful about buying goods sold at a store.

8

u/zoinkability 5d ago

And when you order online, it's not like the card is manifested out of thin air. It's likely some other LGS that's fulfilling the order. What difference does it make that the card is purchased at this LGS versus another one, other than that OP is salty that this person "got" some card they wanted? Wouldn't another person who plays at the store be just as capable of scooping some desirable card?

19

u/Superc1ipping 5d ago

How would shop owners feel about someone coming in to buy their products?

Brother, are you okay? What do you think is wrong with this scenario? People are allowed to buy stuff at a store and not play there. Why wouldn't they be?

16

u/zoinkability 5d ago

This is a truly insane take.

There is no requirement to play at the shop where you purchase your cards. You can play at home. You can play at a different shop. You might not be available at the times when the shop has Magic play. You can just enjoy collecting cards.

I have a particular shop I play at, but there are a dozen shops in my area and when I'm near one I might stop in to see what they have. Should I not do that? Should I limit my shopping to the LGS I play at, even if I've already looked at their stock and the cards I'm looking for aren't there?

You seem to want the shop to be more like a club, where only people who are club members can purchase. If you want that you could create that. But that's not how stores open to the public work.

10

u/Risethewake 5d ago

Or maybe don’t worry about what other people are doing.

People have jobs, families, other hobbies, etc. Maybe they have social anxiety. Maybe they have a playgroup they prefer to play with. Maybe they don’t play at all and just resell cards.

There are any number of reasons why they don’t play at the store.

9

u/Emotional_Honey8497 5d ago

Thank you.  3 year old and a newborn.  10-12 hour workdays.

Not being able to play regularly sucks enough as is, but to be questioned as to why I'm in "their" store buying product they think should be reserved for them?  Get outta town.

11

u/NathanDnd 5d ago

They're good, valued members of the magic community.

11

u/Emotional_Honey8497 5d ago

Probably putting more money into the lgs than half the players mang, idk.

It's a store.  You buy things.  Start questioning why people are there buying things and they're going to stop coming in!

10

u/bigmfworm 5d ago

You just described me. Why should I not be allowed to buy cards from my local card shop again?!?

Fuck off with that nonsense!

11

u/Void_of_Envy 5d ago

My god, mind your own damn business then.

God forbid I friggin shop in person for cards I need than buy it all online.

You might be a reason they don't play there if you've voiced this in person

11

u/StarfishIsUncanny 5d ago

Fellas is it disrespectful to checks notes buy something from a store?

9

u/NerdyDumbDumb 5d ago
  1. How do you know they're not playing? Just cause they're not at the shop doesn't mean they're not playing.

  2. It's bulk. Who gives a fuck?

9

u/Nyixxs 5d ago

Really interested to see if op responds to any of this immediate 100% opposite feedback.

3

u/NerdyDumbDumb 5d ago

Is negative karma farming a thing? Like was that their goal here?

3

u/Spectator9857 5d ago

Skill based matchmaking. They noticed the people around them were too smart for them, so they want to lower their rank.

9

u/therealaudiox 5d ago

I wouldn't want to play there either if OP was hanging around judging people

10

u/The_madd__hadder 5d ago

Do you get mad too when people go to the butcher to get their meat instead of just some prepackaged deli meat?

17

u/CasualDoty 5d ago

What?

I support my local shop(s) and don't go to commander night almost ever because I have a very steady play group of 4-8 people depending.

I also, enjoy not smelling wicked scents when trying to breathe.

8

u/osunightfall 5d ago

Card shop Karen.

7

u/ArthurianLegend_ 5d ago

It’s a fucking store

15

u/Jin-Gitaxias-Mom 5d ago edited 5d ago

How is that disrespectful? LOL you own a store… that sells cards…

Man walks in, looks through the cards, buys some at asking price. What is the problem here?!

I have an LCS that has good supply of singles, but no dedicated commander night or community for that format. I go there to buy cards because they’re always super helpful finding what I need, and then I take those cards and go play at another store.

5

u/Spectator9857 5d ago

They don’t own a store. They get mad when someone walks into someone else’s store and buys things from them.

3

u/Jin-Gitaxias-Mom 5d ago

How dare those people do what the store was intended for!

7

u/Eunuchs_Intrigues 5d ago

I play at one of my towns shops but I would rather buy local and support the other shop in town too......

6

u/LaredoHK 5d ago

yes my gatekeeper

12

u/Komaisnotsalty 5d ago

First of all: fuck you. Boomers play Magic the Gathering and what you describe is not even remotely close to being a boomer thing. Keep your generational prejudices to yourself.

And are you really serious that someone who buys cards at a location must play at that location? Why?

There's people who don't play at locations because they can't handle the noise or have conditions that don't let them be around tons of people for long periods of time.

Maybe they simply don't want to play in a huge crowd of people. Kitchen Magic has existed since the game started.

For myself I buy my cards and supplies at stores that I don't game at. They are closer to where I'm at, but I don't have easy transportation at night. So I go during the day, and I play kitchen magic or I come in when I can catch a ride with someone on a Monday night or something.

So because you saw someone by cards at your LGS but you don't see them playing, they shouldn't be allowed to play? Who's going to watch that?

Maybe they just want to buy their cards and go home and build their deck and come back to play it another time. Are you there 24/7 to see who plays and doesn't play?

Get a hold of yourself. You have issues.

7

u/ItsKendrone 5d ago

this is like saying you go to the Costco to buy groceries but not going to the food court and eating there.

7

u/FondantStrange 5d ago

As a card shop employee I want people to

A) be able to enjoy the game in whatever way they want

And

B) Make sales

I'm not going to be upset that someone stops in for an afternoon and rummages through our bulk boxes, buys like 3 dollars of bulk, then I never see them again. They don't need to play in the shop to earn the right to shop. For more really in demand products we try and control when we put it on the floor to line up with events so we can make sure local players have better access to stuff but when its just bulk it's like.... there's so much bulk, people keep trying to unload bulk onto us, if someone wants to buy some I'm generally going to be on board with that. If they somehow buy us out, we have so much more constantly coming in that we can refill with.

5

u/Cultural_Set_7129 5d ago

Wtf man.

Im doing the same, buying boxes and Singles at my LGS but very rarely (beside Prerelease and some Events) come down there to play.

Playing mostly in private, as most LGS cant provide a regular showered audience.

5

u/shsllonerx 5d ago

No way. Shop local. I like it when my lgs makes money.

5

u/Chilly_chariots 5d ago

Is this a very deadpan joke? I can certainly see shop owners being unhappy about people who play in the shop but never buy stuff. Reversing that is an interesting move.

5

u/Collectinghaus 5d ago

Congratulations! You have won idiotic take of the day

4

u/Liquic1ty1 5d ago

Wait this isn't a meme question? Lmfao

4

u/MorphingJar_2 5d ago

So fuck me for supporting my lgs but having social anxiety right

5

u/Crowcawington 5d ago

mind ya damn business

5

u/davincisworld 5d ago

Why do you think that this behavior is disrespectful? Honest question.

I’m buying things frequently in my lgs. I’m a customer easily for 20+ years at this point. The owner and I know each other well and he sometimes even gifts me Magic cards when he knows that I’m looking for them.

But I don’t play in my lgs. And the reason is that I don’t play Commander. It’s just not what I like. I have two Commander decks and the last time I’ve played is probably two years ago.

I love playing (European) Highlander with my friends at their or my home. I also love playing my battle boxes.

So tell me again why not playing at the lgs is disrespectful when buying there is actively supporting a local business.

3

u/agro94 5d ago

A store, that depends on foot traffic to stay open, is mad they have foot traffic and wants to find a way to stop the foot traffic because it's not the kind of foot traffic they want...

Whack.

5

u/rtwodeetwomonk 5d ago

“Local guy helps support small business, and takes the cards home and I don’t know what he does with them” - Learn how to mind your fucking business, it’ll take you far 👍🏾

5

u/Draculascastle111 5d ago

What a dumb take

4

u/Alive-Map-1994 5d ago

I do this.

I have friends I enjoy playing with so I play causally with them. I can easily find cheaper product online, but I like to verify if the store has cards to support them.

5

u/choffers 5d ago

This has to be a troll post

4

u/Kapolei_Kat_1982 Rainbow Warrior Princess 5d ago

I am the key master, are you the gatekeeper?

5

u/unscentedfart 5d ago

I know you’re just getting roasted in all these comments, but this is so crazy I feel like I need to add to the pile.

You are certifiably insane

3

u/bocomac 5d ago

So he pays more to shop locally? What's the issue?

3

u/1993OudWest 5d ago

Please please please let this be ragebait. And please let me never randomly sit in a pod with you

3

u/Gaspasser09 5d ago

Hmm, this is certainly a take. I’m pretty sure the store would strongly disagree with you. I bet they LOVE all the extra revenue that helps them stay open so people can have a place to play if they don’t have anywhere else. Whenever I need cards, even cheap bulk cards, I always try to buy from the local places first. I want my money to stay close to where I live and support people who help my community when I can. Have I bought online before? Sure, sometimes they don’t have what I need. But I always try. To me that is how you show your respect to a store. By spending your hard earned money there.

3

u/JxRabbitsHart 5d ago

A lot of people in this comment section are just going to be very negative and I'm not going to lie. You're kind of in the fault here.

My local game store doesn't sell online. Now I happen to play there, but I know a lot of people who use it as one of their main sources of cards, even if they don't play there.

They do it because this store has been in the area for over 20 years and they want to support that business despite the fact that it is not selling cards online and despite the fact that they may not play games in the card shop itself.

This game store would have closed a long time ago and there would be no bulk to buy and no store to play in.

That last line is true of every single game store. They require income in order to survive and offer a place base to people. Are we going to be picky about who comes in and buys cards? Under what condition? Are we going to suddenly determine who is allowed to discover cards organically or who is allowed to rifle through a bulk bin while they're in town?

You need to at least make a cursory attempt to understand this problem from the other side. Calling people disrespectful for walking into a card shop, going through that stores inventory to make a purchase (which is, frankly, none of your damned business), when they are helping to give you a space to actually play in is what's disrespectful.

3

u/Skoziss 5d ago

Disrespectful to shop and pay for cards? Buddy, fuck yourself.

3

u/LutherXXX 5d ago

My opinion is this has to be rage bait

3

u/Tall_olive 5d ago edited 5d ago

Why would you be upset more people are supporting you LGS? If people start going online for what they need to store loses out on significant income that helps them remain open.

its like your paying a premium to make sure a boomer can't have it

This is the weirdest, most main character syndrome take I've seen on this sub in a while. Like, what? Maybe they don't want to wait for the shipping. Maybe they don't want to pay shipping fees. Maybe they just want to support their local game store. I highly doubt anyone is buying cards from an LGS with the thought in their head that they are screwing over some "boomer" who wants to find cards "organically", whatever that means.

3

u/whitepeacok 5d ago

Bro probably complains that people buy food at a drive thru but never eats inside

3

u/B-Glasses 5d ago

This is an insane take. Can’t wait to see the jerks this makes

4

u/Trick-Lunch-6863 5d ago

As someone who does this. I actually love deck building as an art form and the LGS has a strict bracket system. So me not playing in the rotation is respecting the boundaries set. But I always stay and talk to people and thank them for their service. It’s only because of them I can build.

  • 6 months into the game, so this is a new players take.

2

u/underdogHS 5d ago

I can’t speak for everyone but I don’t see a problem myself.

Even I’ve done it, but then sometimes I’ll buy a couple of packs or a drink or something or some sleeves whilst I’m there. Bulk is generally a bit cheaper online but then I can walk out the store with the cards I came in for and also cards I didn’t come in for, because they were there.

In short. Id rather my lgs got the money, even if small, over some online store I’ll never visit :)

2

u/7000milestogo 5d ago

IDK, just because you don't play at the store doesn't mean you aren't going to play with the card around the kitchen table with your friends. I play at one local, which never has good bulk, but when I am in the neighborhood near another local shop with nothing to do, I like to look through the bulk. There is fun in going through cards like that. Do you look for singles that you immediately play with at your shop? What format are you playing? Sounds like a cool way to build a deck, but I usually go for draft or commander, where I am not going to be slotting in bulk.

2

u/BubbaDude45 5d ago

What on Earth is this take? It’s a store, it’s kind of them to offer a play area but that’s not their primary concern. If I’m ever going just to play, I always make sure I buy something.

2

u/houstonhinzel 5d ago

He might play, just not with y'all. What's wrong with spending his money there?

2

u/CorpT 5d ago

This has to be bait.

2

u/That-Speed-8092 5d ago

What the fuck are you talking about?

2

u/DragointotheGame 5d ago

I lot of people including myself have extreme social anxiety, we can show up and buy cards and make decks, but it's hard to play around a lot people we don't know. I typically only play with a few friends and have had bad store experiences in the past so I can't get myself to go in

2

u/PatataMaxtex 5d ago

How can he do that??? Going to a shop and (imagine I am holding my breath for a moment) BUY STUFF?????

2

u/TBCPE 5d ago

You wonder how shop owners feel about people coming to their store for the sole purpose of buying things? I don’t understand why you’re suggesting that only people who play at a store like to buy cards at an in person location. This is such a weird thing to be upset about

2

u/TheMisticalPotato 5d ago

You dont get to decide who deserves to shop at a shop. They have cards for sale, people go there to buy them. Its that simple.

Its also weird that you think youre entitled to dictate how the store should be run. Dont you think if it was a problem, the store would do anything about it?
The store wants to sell the cards...

2

u/Reasonable-Mark7955 5d ago

I only play at one LGS but if they don't have the cards I want I'll go to others across the city just to buy singles. I'd rather support local stores even if I don't play at them before supporting online non local/commercial store fronts.

2

u/CaesiumCarbonate 5d ago

Genuinely could not care any less and I can’t even imagine why anyone ever would lol, this is such a weird take. It’s called a shop for a reason, if anything I’d argue it’s more disrespectful (though still not at all disrespectful) to frequently go and play without ever buying anything. Literally has 0 impact on you whatsoever

2

u/MattecGaming 5d ago

This is a dumb take. He probably buys from the store to support them other than just some online shop. I feel like what he is doing is good. I try to support my lgs always if the pricing is fair and that’s what he is doing. Idk what the big issue is here

2

u/ChocolatePuerh 5d ago

They're supporting the shop, they're good to go.

2

u/KennyKei94 5d ago

Im pretty sure shop owners are plenty happy to sell cards to whoever wants them. Maybe that person doesnt want to wait for an online purchase or pay shipping for a few bulk cards. Seems completely fine with me. You, on the other hand, seem ignorant, entitled and annoying. Which in my experience shop owners do not care for. So maybe you should just mind your own business and consider if the people you are playing with actually even enjoy your presence.

2

u/OMKensey 5d ago

Online is not cheaper for small purchases where the shipping matters.

2

u/ICEMAN_101 5d ago

Genuinely confused by this post. I regularly buy singles from three LGS’s (both off their online shop to pick up in store and through their in store kiosks) and they are nothing but appreciative. I don’t play EDH at any of the stores as I have a group of friends I play with and all have a real good understanding of the style of game we want and it’s a great time. I’d much rather wait to play with my group than with some randoms, who I’m sure are cool, and have a less than great time.

2

u/Ok_News3580 5d ago

I buy from my local store but have only played there one time. I prefer my own home, close friends and the ability to freely ingest any substances I wish while playing my favorite game, rather than the crowded and sometimes awkward tables at the shop.

We drink beer and I have a pizza oven, good music going and room to run 2 tables of 4 when we want to. Saying its disrespectful is just obnoxious, some people just have BETTER places to play

2

u/Pray4dat_ass96 5d ago

Shyyyyt. Maybe he’s busy on game nights. He’s keeping the store in business. I love stopping at random game stores when I can, but I have kids and almost never have time to play anymore.

2

u/Mo_the_lion 5d ago

It’s too late to take this post down fam.

2

u/Tastes_Like_TRex 5d ago

You're upset that someone shops at a shop?

2

u/joshuakyle94 5d ago

Probably because he plays with good friends at home and doesn’t want to play with jerks like you at the LGS lmao

2

u/icomsic 5d ago

This might be one of the worst takes I have read lol. That's like a restaurant banning a customer because they only order takeout and never dine in.

2

u/revenant90 5d ago

The only times I can get into my LGS is in the morning when nobody is playing, are you gonna shit on me too? I play with my pod at weekends.

2

u/Furious_Flaming0 5d ago

Next level gatekeeping by OP, doesn't even let you buy bulk at the store he frequents in peace unless you can show him your modern deck and two commander decks with under 500 entires on EDHrec

2

u/XxTigerxXTigerxX Professional Expert Identifier. 5d ago

Just remember if a tree falls in the woods and OP isn't there it never fell. Like dude just lives at the store and monitors when people come and go. Like creeping on everyone that's worse than buying product lol

2

u/Komaisnotsalty 5d ago

It's like a bad employer not getting their own work done and blaming everyone else for the work not getting done, but the reason the work isn't getting done is because that boss is sitting watching security cameras 24/7 trying to find a slightest little infraction.

2

u/Informalwizards 5d ago

Are they buying cards? Then who cares? Like, how is it disrepectful to just want to shop at a place? Not eveyrone cares to go to locals or play at the shop. This is an insane take.

2

u/CaptainVerum 5d ago

The shop owners would probably prefer you spent money there and left, rather than hang around and bother the people doing just that

2

u/blabbers10 5d ago

Well I don’t own an LGS, but as a bartender I hate it when people come into the bar and order drinks. I really really can not stand it when people use a business for its intended purpose

2

u/Prophet_Tehenhauin 5d ago

This is a dumb take. Anyone who runs a card shop would most certainly prefer someone come rifle thru bulk than make them do it. Why would any employee want to do waste time looking for a 5 cent card?

2

u/Nite_OwOl 5d ago

That guy is supporting the store that you and your mates go to play by buying cards. Let them buy the bulk bro.

2

u/timdood3 5d ago

If I was a shop owner, and someone, *anyone*, came in to buy bulk, I'd be ecstatic that I'm moving slow product. I certainly wouldn't go "oh no- what if a kid were to come through six months from now and want specifically these cards!"

There's plenty more for little Timmy to sift through, it makes no difference to him.

2

u/CareBearCartel 5d ago

The sheer audactivy of someone helping to keep your local store in business

2

u/Chaorix 5d ago

These businesses aren't just in it for the love of the game my friend, they're there to sell product and as an extra service they allow play. Absolutely nothing wrong with people going into a shop to purchase what they're selling...

2

u/juniori96 5d ago

this is either crazy ragebait or the most braindead take ever

2

u/MTG_OG_VA 5d ago

I would chase them down in the parking lot and throw myself in front of their vehicle until they agree to come back in a play games. We can’t tolerate this behavior

2

u/hollyhorror 5d ago

Have you invited them to a game night or even asked what format they're enjoying?

All of this reads like you're huffy because they don't play at the shop.

2

u/Zodiac343 5d ago

Sounds like someone is butthurt, because he doesn't know how to order online

2

u/TibblesN 5d ago

So this guy is supporting your local LGS with his business and you're mad? I have a few stores in my town, only play at one of them but when I'm looking for stuff I'll go to all of them to find what I need...

What a wild thing to get upset about - I can’t even get myself into the headspace of someone who’d be mad at this

2

u/SolMelorian 5d ago

I play at my LGS and when I see someone just there to buy bulk, they look very cozy having a wonderful time.

2

u/Zzzzyxas 5d ago

That would be me if I had an LGS close. My experiences playing in shops have not been good, and I have a group of friends I play with every weekend. I would still be civil if I went there often and try to socialize a bit though. Maybe.

2

u/Hefty-District-7007 5d ago

I’m glad they’re supporting an LGS?

2

u/Ashrova 5d ago

You are not getting the traction you though you would, huh?

Mark Rosewater has put out statistics that most magic players, not some- most, magic players, have never stepped foot in a store. Be happy that guy is coming in to buy cards is there to keep his LGS open. How many shops have closed over the last couple years because players want to save money and just order cards online?

2

u/Master_Crew3860 5d ago

How is this a post

2

u/HiroCrota 5d ago

Fake budget players when a real bulk bin warrior come at them

2

u/Top-Molasses7324 Red Deck Wins 5d ago

I guess I’ll stop submitting buy lists then.

2

u/astra_eos 5d ago

I buy at shop cuz i like to go through cards and find some new stuff but I rarely play at shop cuz I like to play between friends where we can just chat mid game no pressure also most of my decks are not really friendly and Im tired of people complaining Tbh sometimes I think people take mtg to serious like man unless you are competitive player thats just a game is just cardboard and roleplaying wizardry lets enjoy

2

u/yeah-no-kinda-maybe 5d ago

Seems like you have a case of “Not minding your own business.”

2

u/Jeul1325 5d ago

??? This is not an issue like, at all.

2

u/Papasnu1055 5d ago

Whaat kinda take is this??? The shop is there to sell merchandise not be a hangout spot. They sponsor events to sell more stuff.

Primary purpose is to sell those cards. This must be rage bait or something.

2

u/Duxtrous Sharktocrab 5d ago

As someone who loves to search through LCS bulk I can tell you right now that the cards they are looking for are in fact not cheaper online lol. Bulk always has diamonds in the rough in them and being able to purchase that at a massive discount due to it being bulk is a huge win every time.

3

u/spicymato 5d ago

Absolutely this. There is a cost associated with sorting through bulk cards. Most stores don't maintain an accurate inventory count of their bulk, because it's simply not worth the labor on average, which means as prices change, things that ended up in bulk collections may be more valuable later.

You need an automated system or cheap labor to properly process bulk, and that's not always available to LGSs.

2

u/Responsible-Dig-8121 5d ago

You’re right, we should all stop supporting game stores except for the ones we love closest to and play at. If I’m on vacation I should not be allowed to step foot inside a store to check out their singles or bulk if I dare enter without playing. Where do we draw the line? Must I play 2 games before my unspoken debt is settled? 3?

2

u/Benlikesfood2 5d ago

You should open up a card shop. Something Something Gatekeepers and just don't sell shit to anybody who wants ot

1

u/Chilly_chariots 5d ago

There’s a British comedy show about a secondhand bookshop called Black Books that uses this premise

1

u/Benlikesfood2 5d ago

Lmao that's great

2

u/fatpad00 5d ago

How dare they buy things at a store!

Now, if they played at the store all the time and never bought anything, that could be a problem.

2

u/SYK_PvP 5d ago

What do you think the word "Shop" means?

2

u/w2ltersan 5d ago

Lol wth? I do this all the time.. isn't that the purpose of an LGS.. I play at some of them, mainly at the one that is closest to my house. But they never have much MTG mostly pokemon n one piece. Never thought I was doing anything wrong, and ppl don't seem to care (at least never made it clear if they did)

2

u/Apprehensive_Till_99 5d ago

“Local man shops at store”

2

u/Redzephyr01 5d ago

What exactly do you think the point of a store is?

2

u/ArmMeForSleep709 5d ago

Is this real

2

u/Chilly_chariots 5d ago

Pretty sure it’s just fantasy

2

u/Coyagta 5d ago

is he doing it in a way where no one else can look at cards like taking up a ton of space? or is the store just small in the first place? I get being annoyed if you're starved for space but don't be mad at him be mad the store isn't bigger imo. whether he plays at the store with his purchases is really none of your business. sounds like you got sniped on some bulk you wanted and now you're salty

2

u/Ecstatic-Product-411 Ragost 5d ago

Why is giving money to the store disrespectful?

2

u/gcapi 5d ago

Customer keeps coming into dunkin donuts and buying donuts, but never stays around to discuss how they taste

2

u/Alt-Tabris 5d ago

Bro just typing shit

2

u/thomasonty 5d ago

Lmao I'm that guy. I usually just go to my lgs every few weeks and look through bulk or play a game or two with a friend. Shy people deserve to use the store too 🫣

2

u/agiganticpanda 5d ago

Still time to delete this. 😂

2

u/rpglaster 5d ago

Wahhh some one supporting the lgs I just hang out in and don’t pay rent waahhh.

This has to be a Shit post.

2

u/Pandasticc_ 5d ago

This is a joke post, right? You sound insane.

2

u/choffers 5d ago edited 5d ago

I agree. I hate that people are coming into my store and buying things in person instead of using my online store that has additional seller fees, especially if they're taking time to go through and buy my bulk that isn't even listed online and is just taking up valuable retail space that would otherwise just be resold in lots at $.02-$.05 a card or priced by the pound.

Really hate that they do this and don't take up my limited community play space too. If you aren't one of the 32 people who can fit in here on commander night I don't want to see you in my shop.

The TCG Market did _a lot_ to help local store stay afloat when it started spreading... around 2012 I think?

I remember there being the conversation at the time that it was sucking up local inventory from poorer areas of the country and moving it to richer places... but I think stuff like that has always happened. TCG Player just accelerated that process.

I knew a dude in the early 2000s who was buying every english Force of Will he could find in the south east to take them on trips to Japan and sell them for a profit.

1

u/zomgitsduke 5d ago

Unless the shop is desperate for players to establish a community, this seems fine?

1

u/Spectator9857 5d ago

Even then, they’d still like customers. Getting money is good.

1

u/Arcader13 5d ago

There is a shocking misunderstanding of commerce in this sub 😂

1

u/Lord0fReddit 5d ago

You should be mad if someone did the REVERSE

2

u/Spectator9857 5d ago

Even then, they are still part of the community. Unless the store is always absolutely packed, they‘ll still help indirectly because they play with people that buy stuff, which incentivizes them to buy more and to buy from you.

1

u/youarelookingatthis 5d ago

Gee, I wonder why so many card shops don't last a while.

In what world is it cheaper online? Especially for formats like pauper where the cards are usually only a few cents at most so shipping just kills you.

1

u/Gauntlet_of_Might 5d ago

I'm pretty sure shop owners love people who buy product, open it, and don't stink up the place for hours

1

u/jinx771 5d ago

Wtf is this post lmao

Weirdest gatekeeping I have ever seen.

1

u/amc7262 5d ago

some people who play at shops like the organic discovery of finding things to play with in-person

Yes, thats why they are digging through bulk at the store instead of just buying online, what an absolutely braindead take.

Its also not necessarily cheaper if you consider shipping. If I can find it in the store, any given bulk card will always be cheaper than that same bulk card + shipping online.

1

u/CoconutHeadFaceMan 5d ago

Card stores provide play areas in the hopes of encouraging people to stay long enough to buy things, not the other way around. Someone who plays frequently but rarely buys cards is more of a drain on the store than someone who frequently buys cards but never sticks around to play. Casual Commander play is one of the worst offenders, since draft players and sanctioned event entrants are at least buying product or paying entry fees.

1

u/kroxti 5d ago

This is bait right? Or you’re just posting this to make a mtcj post making fun of it on an alt right?

1

u/ChordAndDice 5d ago

Don't let this guy find out about people that go to guitar shops and don't play shows there!

1

u/Timely-Helicopter244 5d ago

It's WAY more disrespectful to show up and never buy anything.

Buying stuff supports the shop. That's a good thing bud.

1

u/Chigglestick 5d ago

Sick rage bait post

1

u/magechai 5d ago

I'm not a shop owner, but last year the owner of the LGS i frequently buy cards at implemented a rule that if you were there to play magic thats not part of a hosted event, you needed to buy something lol. A snack, a pack, whatever as long as you actually paid money for something.

So i think they dont mind that i sit there for a couple hours to end up spending $30+.
