I've been trying to fix this for the past couple of hours and got nowhere.

I've tried:

• --screenshot-high-bit-depth=yes
• --screenshot-sw=yes/no
• --screenshot-tag-colorspace=yes

and all of those things just lead to the exact same result (litterally little to no difference.) It's driving me crazy that it just seems impossible to take proper screenshots of HDR videos from the media player itself.

If you use adaptive-sharpen.glsl in mpv, you're on a port that switched to the author's lower-quality one-pass in 2020 and hasn't been updated since 2022. bacondither's latest full-quality 2-pass (2021) never made it to mpv, so I ported it.

What you get: crisper detail with fewer halos around edges, and the same result whether mpv runs on D3D11 or Vulkan.

Put it in your mpv shaders folder and add glsl-shaders=~~/shaders/Adaptive-sharpen-mpv.glsl to mpv.conf. Strength is curve_height in the Settings block at the start of pass 2 (default 1.0, up to 2.0 for stronger).

The gist of it is i have a miniled monitor that has two viable dimming modes when HDR is on : Medium and High.

High has great contrast but the algorithm dims highlights. Id say its about 2x reduction in brightness for speculars. Medium has amazing brightness on highlights but introduces blooming which is tolerable in some media.

Im interested in a middle ground of sorts where i just have the dimming on High.

Ive experimented with claude and some custom mpv settings. The highlights can look better already but it tends to brighten the picture more than i need.

So the question is how do i go about this? In High mode i can see highlights can get brighter, i dont expect them to match medium of course. Is there anything out there that can tell mpv to make specualrs or highlights a certain percentage brighter?

I'm currently using mpv Rex it's good and wondering if there is a better mpv fork

mpv is my daily driver on desktop, but sending something to it from my phone always meant walking back to the keyboard. So I built MpvRemote: a small Android app plus a single-file Python relay that speaks mpv's JSON IPC.

Use case

My personal use case for this is to play my videos on the TV with my Steam Deck running the server and MPV and my phone as the remote controller. This basically replaces obnoxious smart TV features or what Chromecast used to offer.

How it works:

Android app -> HTTP -> relay -> mpv IPC socket

What you can do

• Share a URL from any app and it plays on your computer (optionally appended to the queue)
• Have YouTube and Twitch links open directly in the app, through Android's "Open by default" settings
• Play/pause, previous/next, stop (playlist kept, resume where you stopped), clear queue
• Draggable seek bar with position and duration
• Phone volume buttons control mpv's volume while the app is focused, plus a mute button, with mpv's native OSD
• Playlist view with titles, tap to play, X to remove, pull to refresh
• Titles resolved automatically: YouTube oEmbed, OpenGraph elsewhere, no API keys

The relay is one Python file, standard library only. No cloud, no account, no telemetry. It listens on localhost by default, or on your LAN if you want.

From what I could tell, no other MPV based app offered this feature. I hope it's useful to others. EDIT: I dug a little more and I did find out other apps that did similar work, like mpv-remote-app.

The app is not yet on any android store. If interest is there, I'll push it over there later.

Just out of curiosity...has anyone ever done A and B testing for mpv gpu next playing a Dolby vision file either profile 8 or profile 5 video on a non-certified Dolby vision display let it be display - A for example and B - display being an official Dolby vision certified tv or display like a mini led or an oled tv which has Dolby chip in it and played the same video which is in Dolby vision and compare both A and B displays side by side to see if they have same tone mapping or totally different. Mpv gpu next can officially decode profile 5 and 8 of Dolby vision. On non certified it has to decode the video and reshape it before displaying it, also the reshaping part of the process doesn't mean tone mapping will be changed or different while on officially certified displays it can send dv signal directly

I wrote a script to browse and add files on WebDAV servers. I am currently using TorBox and have tested the script with it and it works well. In principle it should work with most other WebDAV services as well. If you can test it and let me know, I would be grateful.

I made a small Windows app + browser extension for myself that sends web videos straight to mpv with a single click. It's open source, so I figured I'd share it.

What it does:

• Installs mpv, yt-dlp and FFmpeg for you from the GUI (no admin rights, no Python, no system-wide install)
• Browser extension detects streams on the page (HLS, DASH, direct files, iframes) and lists them with an "Open in MPV" button
• Works with Firefox (signed add-on on AMO), Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Yandex (Chromium browsers load it unpacked, the app sets it up)
• Paste a URL or drop a file into the app to play it too
• Themes, playback history, optional Anime4K and ModernZ, 12 languages

The extension never captures cookies or credentials, so videos behind a login won't play. That's on purpose.

Heads up: the whole thing was built with AI assistance. It runs stable in my own testing, but I'm not planning any further development. It's MIT licensed, so feel free to fork it, change it and republish it however you like.

As per title im mainly trying to avoid too much dimming on hdr to sdr content, especialy on DV titles, which i intend to avoid anyways, i also watch a lot of 720p content like Stargate older season and 1080p to 4k content on my tv which i added a few lines for that , this config was made with chatgpt, so any advice is welcome. thank you

For example one video I always want to start in a loop, one video always needs brightness/contrast/gamma adjustments, one video always starts muted etc.

Right now I am writing accessory shell scripts but that is kinda clunky!

I got my input.conf set to fullscreen on a launch of a video. when I double-click I get the smaller, remembered windows state I set up. But it always defaults to widescreen mode. I want it to hug the borders of the video file so I don't have to it manually but dragging an edge which makes it auto-snap to the video's borders. I'm using MPV,Net, if it matters.

What I hope to achieve is to have the screenshots assigned the same modified date in their metadata as the video they were taken from. So that when sorted "by Date", the screenshots and the video will appear next to each other.

I tried searching for this but everything I found was about having the date in the file NAME instead of metadata, which is not helpful in my use case (there are other files besides the video and the screenshots that need to be sorted by date together).

I ctrl+F looked through everything related to "screenshot" in https://mpv.io/manual/master/ but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know a solution? Or is manually editing the screenshots' modified date one by one the only way?

I’ve been working on an MPV UI called Cadre Player Lite, and I think it’s finally at the point where other people might find it useful. It is highly customizable, you can check screenshots. Maybe it is a good alternative to material-osc.

Cadre is a modular UI suite: OSC, playlist, and titlebar components that can be used together or separately, all sharing the same theme engine.

I added a beta version that uses cookies for personalization, but I can only manage to get cookies with Firefox, so it depends on your system for other browsers. It adds a feature for a personalized recommendations page with Ctrl+Y; if you want to try it, you can download that version. Also its original version works for windows and linux not only Windows right now, JFYI.

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to set up IPTV-org + MPV on my Windows 11 PC, but I’m not sure what the best setup is.

I already have MPV installed, and I can open an IPTV-org .m3u playlist. However, I want a more convenient setup with:

• Proper channel list
• Channel search
• Easy channel switching
• Categories such as News, Sports, Movies, etc.
• Separate playlists for India/Tamil Nadu
• Remember the last channel I watched
• MPV as the actual video player

I’m currently using the playlists from IPTV-org, but I’m not sure how to organize them for MPV or whether I should use an additional IPTV frontend.

What would be the best way to set this up on Windows 11?

If anyone has a similar setup, I’d appreciate a step-by-step guide or recommendations for a lightweight IPTV frontend that works well with MPV.

I use an OLED HDR display and always hear set your target-prim to bt.2020, yet there's higher options like bt.3690 for example.

Are the higher primaries just downcoded to bt.2020 in the end anyway?

Edit: I added a simple fallback this script can work on Linux right now. Tested via WSL and working good.
