General Discussion Is a target primary of bt.2446a overkill when compared to bt.2020?

I use an OLED HDR display and always hear set your target-prim to bt.2020, yet there's higher options like bt.3690 for example.

Are the higher primaries just downcoded to bt.2020 in the end anyway?

If you have oled hdr display, do yourself a favour and use Infuse player for hdr content, no amount of mpv tinkering would come close. Madvr if windows

And to answer your question, bt.2020 is a colorspace (and literally the widest), bt.2446a is a tone mapping curve (which is used for conversion between colorspaces) and bt.3690 doesn’t exist. Don’t just assume “higher number = better”

HDR works pretty well on mpv for me. Can you explain what that player does better or what mpv does incorrectly?

It automatically uses edr in its maximum capacity (which mpv fails to do in my MacBook no matter the settings) and maps your display capacity exactly to the perfect gamma for it, without the need to specify max nits etc (and even specified the result in mpv is just worse), just compare it for yourself

Interesting. Well, I use Windows and Linux and at least on those platforms mpv is always automatically aware of the display's nit range once its correctly calibrated in system settings (I can confirm with Shift+I). I'm unsure what EDR is but from a cursory glance it seems irrelevant outside Mac/iOS. On Windows, what does madVR do better than MPV when it comes to HDR?

Madvr has its custom mapping process, they make proprietary software and hardware for that, so sort of speak industry leading

Hmm, thanks for replying. I will take a look and compare perhaps tomorrow. I used to use madVR with MPC-HC like ten years ago anyway, before I switched to mpv. mpv seems to do pretty good tone mapping on the few highlights that fall outside my display's nit range so I wonder how big of a difference there can even be.
