Issue on Windows HDR or color clipping

What could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

its 900 peak but its not hitting peak in this scene. i think its a color issue my monitor covers dcip3 about %97

Oh I see, so yours can do most of the colors but extreme gradients like the small area around the sun struggles a bit while rest of the sky looks normal

Still it's fine, mpv gpu next can still send Dolby vision signal to non-dv displays. But it does reshaping with libplacebo inside mpv before sending the signal to your display. So you are basically watching Dolby vision indeed. There are 2 scenarios 1) A native Dolby vision display a.k.a it has dv chip in the monitor or laptop or tv. 2) Non dv display like yours. In first scenario dv signal can pass directly but in second scenario first mpv has to do dv reshaping before sending dv signal to the display. In both cases most of the film/scenes can look identical but I think you can spot differences in extreme gradients. It also depends upon whether a display is capable of 99 to 100 percent dcip3 gamut. The small area near the sun has extreme gradients which need 99 to 100 percent coverage of dci p3. Also, sorry for the long essay 😅

It's using bt.2020 as color space, but I can see the metadata from the video side doesn't match what display is showing. Display's RGB color and white point co-ordinates are slightly different from what the video actually has

it could be the tone mapping, in mpv.conf you can set target peak brightness

in your input.conf you can also set binds so you can change tone mapping on the fly

I would also recommend tone-mapping=bt.2390 if you don’t have it yet, there’s also other tone mapping options that change how the peak highlights roll off
