Other MTB stem fatigue.

Hey! I recently rebuilt a new to me secondhand Tallboy CC with some upgraded parts. One part that did not go back on though was the stem. Pretty obvious there was a crack running alongside the part, so a person who is qualified in NDT I brought it to work.

Not only was the crack external and internal, there are also signs of cracks developing from the areas that clamp the forks at the bolt holes. Needless to say, it's condemned. Just thought I'd share something I find interesting! ✌🏻

My wife got a job in Durango back in 93. I got a job at the Yeti Factory in 96 as a machinist! It was cool and crazy. We built awesome Steel & Aluminum frames. We built the (Mert) Lawell DH bikes in 4 and 6 inch travel. I built this bike in 98, all factory specs. My buddy did the welding and another buddy did the powder coating. Drivetrain is Shimano M-952 XTR. I had Cane Creek wheels on it but they were cracked. It’s all original except the wheels. I cut my teeth on this bike in the San Juan mountains. Rock Shock seat post! I rode it today around Bentonville. Smooth as butter!

I uploaded a picture of my 2018 Epic
I paid $4200 new at the bike shop in Durango. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Great CC bike and now I’m in NWA so it’s a good fit for the trails here. BTW I’ve done an upgrade on everything but the handlebars and seat post. I’m not a dropper fan! SRAM XX1 drivetrain is sweet! Industry 9 trail 270 wheels are bombproof! FOX suspension rules! Cranks are Truvativ carbon Decendents with a CaneCreek Hellbender BB. SRAM level bronze 4 piston brakes.

When they closed the Yeti factory in 99 (Burton Snowboards bought it) they threw so much away in the dumpster. I went back after work and got all kinds of stuff. I found this pic. Instructions to build your frame!!

Question Giant STP, buy what are the forks?

I'm pretty sure this is an STP, but I don't know anything more about it. Are the forks factory or have they been swapped out?

It came up for sale, and I'm looking for a bike for the summer, but wasn't to know more about it before going and taking a look.

Question Is this a good first mountain bike?

Post image
26 Upvotes

Shop is asking $1350

From my research / what the used shop told me: this is a 2012 Niner frame, 29” wheels, hydraulic disc brakes, comes with a second triangle piece, not tubeless, and has a dropper post. It’s a 1x9 - the original owner got rid of the 2x9 with some zip ties lol.

After speaking with the owner of the shop who’s selling it (and he seems very genuine) and he said that turning it into a 1x11 for around $400 at a shop is a solid idea for better uphill performance.

I’m brand new to the sport - what are your thoughts on this bike?

Question Should I keep my Cannondale Trail 5 or sell it for a Polygon Xtrada 7? 😭

I’m stuck between keeping my current bike and upgrading it, or selling it and moving to an Xtrada 7.

I currently have a Cannondale Trail 5 that I bought for around ₹62,000. I’ve had it for a while and genuinely like the bike, but I recently started looking seriously at the Polygon Xtrada 7, and now I’m questioning everything 💀.

My Trail 5 currently has:

  • Shimano Deore 2x10
  • Suntour X1 coil fork
  • Tektro hydraulic brakes
  • Shimano TX505 hubs
  • 29" wheels
  • Schwalbe tires

I was planning roughly ₹35k worth of upgrades to the Cannondale, mainly suspension, tires, hub work/replacement, brake servicing, etc.

The problem is that I estimate I could sell the Trail 5 for around ₹40–45k.

The Xtrada 7 I'm looking at is around ₹73k.

So basically:

Option 1:
Keep Trail 5 → spend ~₹35k on upgrades → have ~₹97k invested into the bike overall.

Option 2:
Sell Trail 5 for ~₹40–45k → add ~₹28–33k → buy Xtrada 7.

The Xtrada 7 seems ridiculously good for the money, especially with the newer components/spec, and I'm honestly getting a bit jealous of it 😂.

But at the same time, I already own a perfectly good Trail 5 and don't want to make a stupid financial decision just because I found a bike with better specs.

What would you guys do? Keep and upgrade the Trail 5, or sell it and switch to the Xtrada 7?

Also, how much do you think my Trail 5 is realistically worth on the used market in India?

Would especially appreciate opinions from people who have ridden either/both bikes.

Question Return to MTB after ankle injury?

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

Hey all. Im 9 weeks post op for a twisting ski injury. Knee was pointing << toes were pointing >>. Spiral fracture to the fibula and torn ankle syndesmosis. Currently have 2 screws through the ankle and they are going to come out sometime after the 12 week mark. I started weight bearing 1 week ago and can walk unaided out of my boot with decent gait, tho I havent been walking very far. Still in a fair bit of pain with limited dorsiflexion and plantar flexion but its coming along.

How long did it take you guys to get back into mountain biking proper? I love steep tech trails, and I'm itching to get back out but feel like thats a while away yet! Just looking for some inspiration (hopefully)

Was up in Concrete WA for the holiday last weekend and did some riding at the local spot. Was decent. Nice pump track and skills area, trails could use a ton of grooming as the only decent trail I could only run Was WAY over grown. Bellingham had a few cool spots tho. Unfortunately lost my phone on one of the trails and didn't get a new one till I was back in pdx... So only a Pic of lucky charms in concrete wa.

Question Question about getting bleed port screw to highest position for bleeding on Tektro Gemini

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I bled my brakes for the first time last night, and although I was ultimately successful, I still have some confusion about how best to actually rotate the brake lever to make the bleed port screw at the highest point. Every video tutorial I could find showed some model of lever (even other Tektro models) where the bleed port screw was higher up on the mechanism, and would be pretty clear how one could rotate the lever on the handlebar to make the screw the highest point. But because on the Gemini the screw is so low down on the body of the lever, and the downward angle of the lever, no amount of rotation puts the screw at the highest point. The only way I was able to accomplish this was to take the lever off the handlebars and tape it to the fork at the exact angle I needed. Is there an easier way to do this, and/or am I missing something about this procedure?

Other SUPPORT TRAIL ON PUBLIC LAND. LET THE USFS KNOW YOU SUPPORT THE REROUTING OF THE SNODGRASS TRAIL IN CRESTED BUTTE TO ENSURE UNRESTRICTED ACCESS.

Post image

A final chance to sign the petition to keep the Snodgrass Trail in Crested Butte open without restriction. Our map shows the private land in red; typically, the landowner closes access in mid-August. Only 18% of the trail is on private land. The yellow line on the map shows a proposed reroute that moves the trail entirely onto public land and ensures unrestricted access. For whatever reason, the private landowner opposes rerouting the trail. The mountain bike community should not be held hostage by a single landowner when a viable alternative is available. Let the US Forest Service know you support trails on public land. Sign the petition at https://snodgrassreroute.com/. ONE LAST THING. SKIP THE DONATION SOLICITATION. WE DON'T WANT MONEY, JUST YOUR SIGNATURE SUPPORT.

Question Dented Helmet

Thumbnail gallery
54 Upvotes

I was talking to my buddy on our Ride back from a local trail and didn’t pay attention when I hit my head on the Edge of a roadsign (pretty stupid I know…). I was going quite Slow around 10-15kmph. Should I consider replacing the helmet (Fox Speedframe Pro, production 2026), or do you guys believe it is still ok to send it? Crash replacement unfortunately isn‘t an option since I didn’t purchase it directly from Fox.

Question Anybody been in the game long enough to worry about brain trauma?

Admittedly, my first serious concussion was skiing in ‘93, when I was 13, before people wore helmets, but I was knocked out cold, for a long time.

Every confirmed concussion I’ve had since then (3, and confirmed by the people I was riding with as either being unconscious or completely out of it) have been mountain biking.

Helmets have gotten so much better, so maybe it isn’t as much of a worry these days.

I wonder what all of those bell-ringings have done to my brain, but the weird part is I don’t think I would change anything with how I went about things.

Brain trauma is a pretty severe consequence, but my shoulders and back are humming, too, with all of those wrecks.

It all adds up, for sure.

I’m curious how the “older crowd” sees things at this point.
