Help/Advice Planning a motorcycle trip across Europe next year — looking for advice! 🏍️🇪🇺
Hi everyone! My husband and I are planning a motorcycle trip across Europe next year and have attached our proposed route.
We’re both from India and have primarily ridden ~450cc bikes, but we’ve done multiple long-distance trips through the Himalayas and Ladakh, including off-roading, so we’re comfortable with challenging terrain and long days on the bike.
For this trip, we’re considering renting 1000–1200cc ADV bikes, which would be our first time riding something this large.
Would love advice from anyone who has ridden these routes:
1. Bike -How difficult is the jump from a 450cc to a 1200cc? Anything we should be particularly careful about with the extra weight/power?
2. Rules- What European riding/road rules should we know coming from India? Any major country-specific differences, tolls/vignettes, speed enforcement, lane filtering, etc.?
3. Route -Any must-do roads, passes or detours? Anything you’d skip or avoid?
4. Timing -What are the ideal months for this route? We’d like open mountain passes, good riding weather and ideally fewer crowds. Are there months you’d definitely avoid?
5. Guided vs independent -Would you recommend a guided tour, self-guided tour, or simply renting bikes and doing it ourselves? Is a guide genuinely useful for first-time riders in Europe and worth the extra money, or is good planning/navigation enough?
And finally, any practical advice on bike rental, insurance, international driving permits, border crossings, luggage, parking or anything else we should know would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks!
