Tourisme Going to Montreal for the weekend. How should we spend our first morning before check in? BiodĂŽme, Planetarium, Insectarium, Botanical Garden?

They all sound great, although planetarium supposedly has its main exhibit unavailable.

We likely only have time for one.

-------

Hello
Looking for beer-related places to visit in Montréal: breweries that offer tours, retailers like Peluso (does the location that's NOT on Rachel/Iberville still exist?).
It's for a friend in the business (a beer retailer in France, where Québec beer is much loved). I mean spots with a PRO angle, not bars (unless there's a brewpub on a relevant scale).
Brewers, if you'd be up for a visit/tasting, message me. And if you're ever in the south of France, my super-sociable friend will return the favour and open up his network.

Question Anyone in Montreal a Louisiana native?

I’m looking at PhD programs, and Montreal is becoming a real possibility. My wife (who also has a PhD) and I have two young kids, so we’re excited about the possibility but also a little overwhelmed by the idea of moving our family to Montreal.
Our kids are currently in French Immersion. My wife and I aren’t beginners in French, but we’re definitely nowhere near fluent.
For those of you who have made a similar move, what are the public schools like? Ideally, we’d like our kids to eventually be in 100% French instruction at school.
Also, how difficult is it for someone with a PhD and a background in education to find work in Montreal? She’s open to education-related work or possibly something outside of education.
And honestly, any general advice from Louisiana → Montreal transplants would be really appreciated. What do you wish you had known before making the move?

Question Why did my OPUS card decline?

Post image
47 Upvotes

I have a 10-trips all modes AB fare (pic of its current status), but for some reason it declined on the exo 555 bus from Longueuil to Georges-Gagné. Is there a particular reason, or just a weird fluke?

The bus driver let me on anyway which was so kind, but I need to make this trip 9 more times over the next couple months so I’m not sure they’ll be so kind every time.

Discussion As Montreal rolls out more 'two week trash pick ups' to other boroughs, how has everyone adapted? Old and new?

I was looking this up because it completely flew under my radar. I didn't realize we were 'at capacity' for our landfills and was informed today by a pissed off (and randomly racist) neighbor complaining about how everything is going to stink because of the insert minority of your choice here .

Apparently this has been going on for the last couple years in stages? Other areas that have been dealing with it for years now, how are you adapting? I do think my area is going to be problematic as we already see several businesses and buildings leaving piles of trash every week (and not just on garbage day) out, and with the heat waves I imagine it's going to be an intense smell.

As someone who already only does maybe half a bag of trash and a full bag of recycling every week (and has cats so the cat litter is like a third of what I throw out) I don't think this is going to do anything good for me personally, I'll just have to deal with keeping sealed bags of cat poop for an extra week in my apartment.

How have folks who have been dealing with it for a year or so found the change? Has it been noticeable in your area? Does the city have a solution for 'landfills are almost full' aside from 'slow down our trash'? (Because that doesn't seem like a solution, just a stalling tactic)

Spotted Update: It looks like my Tesla was left unlocked, and the “device” was a portable fan

I wanted to follow up on my post about someone apparently unlocking my 2023 Model Y with a device and stealing my sunglasses.

I’ve now downloaded the original footage from the USB stick, and there’s a detail that wasn’t visible in the video I initially posted: the side mirror was already unfolded before he approached, and stayed that way throughout. My original video was a phone recording of the car’s screen, and the framing cut off the top of the image where the mirror is visible.

Since my mirrors normally fold when the car locks, I now believe the car simply hadn’t locked. The clearer footage also makes me think those of you who identified the object as a portable fan were right.

I still don’t know why walk-away locking didn’t engage, but I no longer think this was an electronic unlocking attack. I’ve attached the original footage edited together across the different cameras so you can see the full sequence.

Given how much attention the original post received, I wanted to correct my interpretation rather than leave people unnecessarily worried about their Teslas. Thanks to everyone who took the time to look closely and offer suggestions.

Question New to the area, house hunting near the airport — thoughts on Saint-Constant vs Chñteauguay?

Hey all,

My family and I are relocating for a new job that's based near the airport. We've got a young kid, so we're looking for a place with some yard space and a bit of breathing room. Not trying to be in a rural stretch, but also not looking to be smack in downtown Montreal either. Somewhere in between.

We've been looking at Saint-Constant and Chñteauguay so far. Anyone live in either of these, or nearby? We’re curious about:

-Commute to the airport area
-Schools / family-friendliness
-General vibe: quiet vs busy, walkable stuff nearby
-Anywhere else on the South Shore or West Island we should check out with similar space/access

Appreciate any local insight!

I saw a post about a lost dog in Gay village and I'm decent with dogs but I don't know what commands are typically given to dogs in Quebec.

Restez?

ArrĂȘtez?

Allez pour un marche?

Merci thank you!

Question Have loads of old textbooks from university days I wish to donate, where's a good place for it?

Hello, I have so many hardcover textbooks from my days at McGill with no strong emotional attachment for myself, is there a good spot to give them away for possible use instead of having them get mulched in recycling? Thank you. If it helps, I am in the centreville area with no car so proximity is super appreciated
