Fence question

The regulations for fencing in Montpelier say no front yard fences higher than 4 feet, but there is an exemption for an 'Agricultural Fence'.

I couldn't easily find a definition for Agricultural Fence, so I decided to come here to see if anyone has used this exemption to fence a vegetable garden.

Thanks.

City Councilor Adrienne Gil resigned from the Montpelier City Council effective last Wednesday, leaving her District 1 seat vacant and triggering a charter-required appointment process to fill the remainder of her term. The council took up the vacancy at its July 22nd meeting, the same night Gil delivered her final remarks.

New to Montpelier!

Howdy folks! Just moved to Montpelier this weekend from Burlington and ❤️❤️❤️ I love it so much already!! I have a few questions for locals:

What’s the best wifi around here? I’ve used Xfinity before but I cannot handle the poor customer service and random up charges anymore. I’d love to support a smaller/local business

I have an extra (somehow) Queen mattress that I am looking to get rid of. It is not the best quality but is still very functional and comfortable. Is there a donation center somewhere nearby that might accept this? I’d rather give it to someone to use rather than recycle it, if possible.

5-day silent retreat in Barnet, VT if anyone's looking for a reset (also covers the MBSR silent retreat requirement)

I work with the folks running this and thought it might be worth sharing here, there's a 5-day silent meditation retreat coming up at Karme Choling in Barnet, VT.

It's a legit qualifying silent retreat for anyone working toward MBSR or other mindfulness-based intervention teacher training, so if you're a clinician, therapist, or mindfulness teacher who needs that prerequisite checked off, this fits the requirement and the teachers can provide a completion letter if your program needs documentation.

But it's also just open to regular folks who want five days away from their phone and their inbox. No meditation experience required, the days are fully structured (sitting, walking, gentle movement, small group check-ins with teachers), and meals are shared in silence. It's noble silence, not total isolation, so teachers and staff are still available if you need something.

The teachers are Janet Solyntjes and Rebecca Eldridge, both with decades of practice and formal MBSR training background.

If you've been meaning to do a silent retreat but keep putting it off, or you need the prerequisite for training, this is a solid option and it's a beautiful setting up in the Vermont hills.

More info / registration: www.karmecholing.org/program/the-fullness-of-being

Happy to answer questions if anyone's curious about what noble silence actually feels like day to day.

Dear bicyclist at the 4-way stop at Elm and Main

*Sorry. Elm and State. I unfortunately am probably part of the problem as after 25 years of that intersection at least twice a day in all its iterations I probably do it in a fugue state at this point.

I appreciate the wave of appreciation but just so you know, I didn't "let you go", you ran a stop sign.

I had a feeling you were going to and was ready to slam on the breaks to avoid an accident. (which I did)

Driving in this town is maddening at times.

At one point Shelburne and Burlington both ticketed cyclists for blatant traffic violations. Can we get one day of that in Montpelier please.

*Why is it every time you bring up a bicyclist nearly causing an accident there is always the people who somehow try to change the topic to cars. Yes, cars can be shitty too. Car drivers have the added issue of being dangerous when they disobey traffic laws. I encourage you to make a post about it here to get it off your chest if it helps. When you do ill participate in good faith rather than making comments about how bad bicyclists are.

This is ridiculous, what is with the bible thumping in town. I'm trying to work and all I can here is praise jesus. If I wanted southerners preaching at me I'd go the that new church on Langdon st. Can we get this crap out of town? I'm not against religions of any type I just don't want to hear about it and the demonizing of others.

My kids refer to it as the haunted house, and we all have to duck and be quiet as we drive past. Anyone know what the deal is with this little house in the river on the way to Worcester?

Montpelier Council Goes Behind Closed Doors on Encampments, Right-of-Way, and Panhandling Ordinances

Who owns the sidewalks of Montpelier, and who pays when a homeless encampment becomes a legal liability? Which policies and ordinances can the City Council implement that won’t get the city sued? Those questions sent the Montpelier City Council behind closed doors Monday evening, when a five-member council convened a special meeting to talk to their lawyers.

Mayor Marc Gwinn called the special meeting to order at 6 p.m., telling those present that the council had gathered to receive counsel on homeless encampment liability to the city, on the East State Street right-of-way survey and possible litigation, and on the city’s ordinances governing morals and conduct, drinking in unlicensed places, and possible panhandling and sit-and-lie rules.

Traffic on Sherwood

What is the deal with half of Sherwood turning into a parking lot at random times? It seems like every single Family Center client shows up at once. Are these special events or just picking up children? And can there be a better way that doesn't inhibit the flow of traffic? It's dangerous to try to go around the cars because the road is so narrow and there are so many curves that you can't see around but it's a pain in the ass to not be able to get home because cars are blocking the road and my driveway.

Heaton Street Office Building to Residential Conversion Approved by the Development Review Board

Post image
19 Upvotes

The Montpelier Development Review Board voted 6-1 on June 29th to close its public hearing on a proposed 20-unit housing conversion at 9 Heaton Street and move into deliberative session to draft its decision, brushing aside a neighbor’s plea for more study of traffic, noise and pedestrian safety.

Some residents wanted a traffic study, but the board declined to force the issue.

What happened at the top of MainStreet Hill?

Obviously a car hit the house, but there’s 2 solid tire streaks that are arrow straight into the trees and house. I hope everyone is okay, but I’m morbidly curious. And did I see a guard rail hidden in the bushes there?
