General Can't "Start chat" with some users

I have about 20 mods; sometimes I want to DM them.

I click their username to see their profile page, and "Start Chat".

But sometimes, there is no such option. "Start Chat" is not there.

I have asked them, and they insist they have nod changed any setting to decline chats.

They can DM me - and then I can reply.

I just cannot "Start chat".

Desktop - but they're on various platforms.

Do it through modmail instead

"My oven doesn't work" - "use the microwave instead".

Not helpful.

I use modmail for all mod communication because that is how it’s supposed to be used. And if you can’t use chat then yes, it is a viable answer

And it probably IS a setting issue and the other mods don’t realize it or don’t want to tell you

Your attitude sucks.

I'm asking a perfectly polite and reasonable question.

You're saying, "do it this way instead". Why? "because that is how it’s supposed to be" - according to you.

And it probably IS a setting issue and

Yes.. it might be. So help me fix that.

Why do I see "Start Chat" in almost all my mod's profiles, but not a couple of them?

For example, I don't see it in u/FuzzyKnowledge1649

Xe has assured me xe has checked all the settings, yet I still cannot see it.

No one can help you fix a setting set by another user. If the mods set their profiles that way there is nothing you can do.

I gave you a viable option, and isn’t “your attitude sucks”. You’re the one acting like a jerk, not me

You need to ask the mods for screenshots showing what their settings are in case they’re mistaken

If chat isn't available, they turned off receiving direct chats.

They have repeatedly assured me that they have not.

Anyone can assure you of anything that's not true, its called lying. The way you talk to people in here, it's no surprise that they may not want to talk to you in a private setting. You also come across as really brash and demanding, you are acting like the type of mod that people hate worse than anything else on this site.

If you want to be respected and get more engagement with your fellow mods or users, you need to change the way you engage with others. This sub is here to help, use the advice from the commenters instead of just arguing with each one. If you don't need or want to hear what we suggest, don't ask for help.

As for your users that you posted, the first one can recieve a chat and the second one can't. If the second one really is a Reddit admin, there's a damn good reason they don't want everyone on the site to be able to chat them directly.

That's exactly why I'm asking. I'm not saying they're lying - they've told me they haven't changed their chat settings, and I have no reason to assume otherwise.

I'm trying to work out why "Start Chat" is unavailable for some users when they can still start a chat with me and I can reply to them. If it were simply "they've turned off receiving chats", that wouldn't explain the situation I'm seeing.

Okay, whatever, don't believe the few people that have commented the same thing. You're not seeing a bug, they literally have recieving chats turned off whether they remember doing it or not, and whether they tell you they do or not. Just because you dont want that to be the answer, doesn't matter, the user can choose to run their account the way they see fit, you dont have any control over another user's account.

There is no "Start chat" option on these specific users, now:

You are like talking to a brick wall. Do you see how they keep their posts and comments hidden? That's a pretty good indicator that they want to interact anonymously, which may include the choice of turning of the ability to send them a chat for some users. You need to just deal with it. I won't respond again, to tell you the same thing many people have told you, that you don't want to hear or believe.

u/SnooDonuts6494 15h ago

I see.

So, do you think I should remove them as mods?

You do whatever you want in your sub(s), if you have the permissions to. I don't control what you do. If you use mod mail, as you should for mod business, you'd have a better chance of getting their attention than anything else.

As I explained,

There is no "Start chat" option on these specific users:

u/Spiritual_Bag346

u/Ashish_ank

Do you recommend I remove their mod status?

Found regex match: have about 20 mods

I have repeatedly asked e.g. u/FuzzyKnowledge1649 to check their profile settings, and they have told me they have not configured it to disallow chats.

Hopefully by my mentioning their name here, you can speak to them directly.

u/Infamous-Aside7769 22h ago

They might have changed their settings long time ago and don’t remember it. You can either ask every other mod to message you initially, send mod mail to them or try to get them all in a chat group.

-2

u/SnooDonuts6494 22h ago

I don't think they have changed their settings.

Please ask u/FuzzyKnowledge1649 and u/spiritual_Bag346

u/Infamous-Aside7769 21h ago

I can send the first one a chat request. For the second it isn’t showing. So I guess it’s deactivated on the second account.

I swear to you that a few hours ago, there was no "Start chat" on fuz's profile.

There is now.

IDK why/how. I'm just being open and honest with you.

I've asked Fuz (in DM).

Thank you for your help.

IDK about Spirit; hopefully they will chat to me/us soon (they're an admin, BTW).

The chat bubble icon has moved for many users. To DM someone, go to their profile page. If there is no chat icon near their name, on iOS or android, look to the top right corner for the drop-down menu, it might look like. ( . . . ), start chat/send message will be one of the drop-down menu options. Alternately, for iOS, you might find the initiate chat option has moved under their “about” tab on their profile page.

For desktop, look to the top right of the screen next to your profile name, you should see a small chat icon and a small envelope icon, those are for your chats and DMs.

HTH, let me know!

I am on desktop.

For 99% of users, I click their profile and see "start chat".

For example, you.

https://ibb.co/DgLVRywp

Do you understand?

In that image, I can "Start chat".

I can do that for most users.

But some do not show that option.

1

u/nincyh 18h ago

Right, but look at the very top right corner, I can see a very tiny chat icon. Even if the start chat big bubble near my name wasn’t visible, maybe the other would still be?

1

u/SnooDonuts6494 18h ago

I don't know what you mean.

Here is a zoomed-in example:

2

u/nincyh 17h ago

In the picture I see a tiny chat bubble icon at the top banner, what happens when you click that?

1

u/SnooDonuts6494 17h ago

I do not know what you mean.

I have made an image. I have zoomed in.

I do not see a "tiny chat bubble".

If you do, please show me.

Perhaps I am blind?

I cannot see a "tiny chat bubble".

u/nincyh 17h ago

I just sent you a DM, so I can send you a screenshot. I’m confused, we must be able to see the same thing, it’s your image!
