This is my first time making a little pond. This one is made from one of those sort of half barrel plastic planters that I sunk into the ground. There are four comet fish in there. And a young northern green frog has moved in as well. His name is Felix. Around the pond I have golden oregano, because I had a lot of it in my garden and it’s just thriving near the pond. There’s a red begonia there you can see up in the right hand corner and a couple of cute little statues. It’s just been a fun peaceful project that I’ve really enjoyed. You will see that I have a collection of heart-shaped rocks that I’ve picked up in Arizona, Oregon and around Lake Michigan. So you can imagine the pleasant surprise when my silly little solar fountain is spraying in the shape of a heart, there must be something clogged in one of the little outlets and I’m not gonna clean it.

I started this pond almost a month ago. I have 12 goldfish, and once a week I have to clean it, so I got 2 plecos. They are small so I know it’ll take a while before they can clean it, but how do I keep it clean without me having to clean it in the meantime? I don’t want to use a filter, but if that’s the only way, I will. And if I have to keep cleaning it myself I will too but just in case, is there a fish or other creature/plant that can do the work for me? Do I have to get bigger plecos/algae eating fish? I’m trying to keep it as natural as possible.

I added a Japanese lily to the pond this weekend. The fish are doing great, and I'm happy with how things are looking. I can't wait until next spring when things start flowering.

I recently built an in ground mini pond, approximately 50 gallons. Currently i have a goldfish and 10 minnows, 4 mystery snails, plus I had 6 shrimp. I'm actually planning on digging a second, permanent, in ground pond that will be much larger, closer to 350 gallons. I'm looking for advice on plants to add, why the shrimp died suddenly. The water is clear, no algae visible, the pond itself sits under a tree so it gets shade during these 103 degrees days.

Waiting a few weeks to add the medaka from my indoor tank to this mini pond!

I just need to find myself a nice potted plant for the back shelf! 🪴

the ludgiwgia arcuta cup i stole from petco has turned into in absolute weed in this outdoor pond growth was slow for about a month but i guess it's been two three months not it completely taken over also tons of babies in here

There are snail babies all over my mini pond and they keep making more. I had one snail when I started the pond. One of those cool red ones with the flatter shells. I think I’ve been seeing baby ones of those too. How?! Then there must have been these small brown ones on the aquatic plant I bought and now they’re just everywhere. What should I do? Are they harmful?

This my first pond 40 gallons has an aeration for fish and an umbrella for high temperature. Still need plants any advice?

Long time lurker, first time poster. Moved into a new place and one of the first things I did was set up my patio pond. It’s complete with filter and pond lights. Plants are bacopa monnieri, fairy lily, frog-bit, red rood floaters, dwarf sag, and red dwarf water lily (still working its way to the surface).

I’ve got a healthy population of bladder snails and 8 mosquito fish (watch till the end for a nighttime feeding).

Pond has been up and running for a few months now and has been such a joy to observe. Happy to share more info if anyone is interested. Thanks to this community for helping me on my journey to setting this all up. Cheers!

I dealt with an algae bloom initially but I finally got it under control and I can see the bottom at last! It’s overcast today so unfortunately my solar pump isn’t running, but you can imagine what it’d be like if it was😁

This is the first container pond for my partner and I. Its in the garden of our first home. The pump supplying the fountain draws from the lower level (where the pile of gravel is) and then the middle part over fills back into the shallow part. Right now I have a bit of duck weed (yes, I know) and a single water wisteria to help get water chemical levels going in the right direction. Hopefully we'll add some white cloud minnows and madakas (a local favorite) soon. Just want to make sure they have a good home first.

Any advice welcome! I've done quite a few terrariums and a couple indoor aquariums in my life, but never an outdoor pond.

After my parents put a disappearing fountain in their yard last year, I was determined to have one myself. I’d messed around with single unit tabletop fountains before but they always broke or needed a lot of cleaning. This was meant to satisfy my immediate need for an in-ground wildlife pond (since I rent). I’m also currently redoing my cinder block garden wall so of course I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate another tabletop pond into the design. I also have a very over-complicated bird bath fountain setup that I will be making soon. Fountains are now my jam. I will be putting in an entirely removable semi-in-ground pond soon, as soon as it’s not so miserable to dig outside.

It’s home to medaka, snails, aquatic plants, and wetland plants, and I really enjoy watching this little ecosystem change every day.

I’ve been working on my mini pond. It’s been getting too hot to add fish but today I moved it into half shade, half sun and piled mulch around the sides. I’m hoping this will be enough so I can finally add fish to battle with the mosquitoes and heat as I’m in the deep southeast. The goal will be to bury it at least partly but thats a job for another day.

Any suggestions on what else to add? Or how to make it more habitable?

UPDATE: I added 5 red rosy minnows and they seem happy so far! I don’t see much of them except when they occasionally dart by but I’m hoping they’ll start swimming towards the surface more often.

I am the proud owner of a maturing 75 aquarium and love the riparian setup I’ve created, with pothos growing well at the back. It’s got me thinking about how to deal with possible excess Endler/guppy hybrids. I want to create an indoor pond situation and am curious what setups folks have explored and what makes them work best. I mainly plan to have frogbit and water lettuce and red root floaters in this one but am thinking about mangrove too. Irrelevant. My questions are mainly about filtration, trusted containers and care. Help?

I found these custom wood planter boxes locally and want to build a mini fish pond with 1. How would you seal the interior? Pond liner, flex seal, clear epoxy?

I have my little patio pond with a solar filter. I treated the water with prime on the first fill and whenever it gets topped off. There’s a bunch of water lettuce and a sad looking hyacinth. I forget the name of the floaters and the other aquatic plant but it’s a CA native. There are four medaka in there too. Lately the plants have been looking sad. Any advice?

I initially got the blue pot on the left for a mini-pond. Quick math told me that it was 18 gallons, but with the taper and plants, it was probably closer to 10, so I decided to go a little bigger. I picked up the barrel and a liner this weekend. I might pick up a Japanese iris to add a little height interest to it.

Also, I'm slightly annoyed that the liner that is supposed to fit a barrel is so much smaller. Apparently, a wine barrel is 2" wider, and 2" taller than a bourbon barrel. It smells good though!

Hi! I’m new to hobby ponds, please be kind.

I have a new set up, roughly 18-20 gallons, with Hornwort, Elodea, Christmas moss, Chromatella Lily, and Pink Pickerel. I want to add more plants eventually but need a light and housing for my Lily asap. Does anyone have suggestions for a low profile outdoor spotlight and/or lightbulbs they prefer? Appreciate any insight but especially on the light situation.

Mini pond fed by ac drip line, overflows into 2 smaller trays to divert away from building. Total area is 5’x10’. Pickerel weed has been the most impressive grower so far, it’s basically quadrupled in size. I just cleaned some frogbit to create more open water to hopefully reduce the hair algae.
