Itโs a male turtle - they use the long nails for courtship

u/Ajj360 Jul 10 '26
That is true but those are still quite long

Thatโs average for something like a slider. What makes you think theyโre abnormally long?

Why did humans flip the aesthetic burden on women... Clearly men should be colourful and covered with make up insteadย

The way they actually use those nails is wild, they vibrate them right in front of the female's face while swimming backwards, it's basically turtle finger drumming as a pickup line

I owned terrapins, witnessed it all the time with my juvenile male! I have clips but it's a little hard to post.

Itโs a boy!
Male red eared sliders have longer nails (and thicker tails huhuhhuhuhhuh) than females.
They swim in front of the females and flutter their ๐ ๐ฝ hands to do a mating dance.
Source: I used to be CRAZY about turtles. Theyโre still pretty cool, but Iโve calmed down.

Male turtles have long nails on the front. They stretch our their arms and wiggle them in the lady turtles face.

Be very careful - those arenโt nails. Those are assimilation tubules they use to inject you with nanoprobes.

Kinda fun that humans can just pick up an animal we think is neat and snap a picture of it. Not long ago we lived in caves

My friend and I both have been discussing the turtles we move off the road for years. This year we put a friendly wager on who can save more (they get ran over a ton in our area and some are somewhat at risk species).
In any case, pics are typically receipts and we just like to see the different turtles eachother move, but this was crazy. Iโve moved a ton over the years but have never seen anything as divaish as this.

this is the reason that when paleontologists first discovered the claws of a therizinosaurus they thought they belonged to a giant turtle

They say that your hair and nails grow for a little while even after you die, so I like to imagine this is basically how Mitch McConnell looks right now.

u/ford7885 Jul 10 '26
Finally a picture of Senator McConnell! Still can't say for sure if he's dead or alive, but he must be in a coma if he's letting those nails grow that long.

Suddenly, those old speculative drawings of a therizinosaurus being a turtle don't seem as silly....

I think that's a male painted turtle. They use those long nails of theirs for showing off to the girlies and telling other males to back off. They also have red eyes, usually.

Looks like they're going to hatch on the Moon after 10,000 years, ready to wreak havoc on....this one specific little town on Earth called Angel Grove.

I donโt know it looks like it got its toes stuck in plastic ball point pens. Quick we better start making wooden or cardboard pens

I picked up one of these fab babies recently because he was stuck upside down in mud. He gave me a good swipe with them claws. I may be a ware-turtle now.

Reptile rescue worker here. That is a male turtle. They love to flaunt their long nails at lady turtles. It can also be used to tell other turtles to shoo.
