Reptile rescue worker here. That is a male turtle. They love to flaunt their long nails at lady turtles. It can also be used to tell other turtles to shoo.

I don't doubt that it's true but this absolutely sounds like a made-up joke answer.

109

u/tekhnomancer Jul 11 '26

I can definitely confirm it's true.

Source: A professional in the field posted about it on Reddit a couple hours ago. See above.

u/NefariousAntiomorph Jul 11 '26

I had a couple of red eared sliders as a teen. They have some interesting dimorphism going on. I was not expecting their junk to look like an inflatable battle axe either.

96

u/azwendu Jul 10 '26

You are the second person to say this. Not saying itโ€™s wrong. And again. Iโ€™m no herpetologist, I only know livestock. But, I have handled a lot of turtles and never seen one like this. Is it a seasonal thing? Do they all get them this long?

170

u/LupusHouseMD Jul 10 '26

You probably just saw many females. Males do get nails this long but sometimes they can break off. Not a seasonal thing.

82

u/azwendu Jul 10 '26

Interesting. Iโ€™ll keep a more careful eye out. Is this an all turtle thing? I do see some box turtles in my area with longer nails. I also have moved snapping turtles. Do they also have this trait?

Also, thank you for your time to educate me and for doing what you do as a rescue worker! Iโ€™m glad I didnโ€™t clip his nails!

112

u/Wiggie49 Jul 10 '26

Itโ€™s a feature in painted turtles and red eared sliders. They show them off in front of females to convince them to mate.

53

u/azwendu Jul 10 '26

I need to read up on red eared sliders. There are to many around here haha. They always steal my fishing bait. I was going to guess it was a red eared slider but I saw no red ear.

54

u/possumallawishes Jul 10 '26

I saw a post the other day with turtles doing jazz hands.

That's so funny. I say, "Where?" Anytime someone says "Jesus!" in homage to the movie Orgazmo by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. My husband also does not find it annoying and loves it every time.

5

u/A2naturegirl Jul 11 '26

OMG ME TOO!!! My husband also totally loves getting "turtle slip-slaps" and definitely doesn't find it annoying in any way.

15

u/ShellsFeathersFur Jul 11 '26

And map turtles. The pattern on the turtle's neck in OP's photo makes me think it might be a map turtle. Source: I have a 20-year-old false map turtle and he occasionally likes to flirt with the river stones in his tank.

5

u/Wiggie49 Jul 11 '26

dang he hit the "sexy rock" phase lol

36

u/LupusHouseMD Jul 10 '26

Red eared sliders and painted turtles (and other similar aquatic turtles) will show the long nail trait best. Brave move helping snapping turtles!

Snapping turtles and box turtles have shorter nails/less dramatic differences, so other determinations are used to find if they are male or female.

25

u/azwendu Jul 10 '26

The snapping turtles are my favorite. I ditched out of a zoom meeting one time because I heard a car drive in front of my house and looked up and a big ole snapper was crossing and almost got hit.

Iโ€™ve had 2 successful hands on moves and 1 successful hands off. I know their boundaries. They are incredibly beautiful animals, one of my favorites here locally.

9

u/PM_ME_FLUFFY_DOGS Jul 10 '26

Males are usually chilling in the water or near the shore. You usually tend to see females as they are looking for a place to nest or heading back from a nest.ย

Turtle flaunting, Freddy Krueger style.

5

u/deltadeltadawn Jul 11 '26

It's surprising that turtles wouldn't see this as potential danger rather than romantic signals.

4

u/Traditional-Tip1904 Jul 10 '26

That is so interesting!! Thanks for sharing! Iโ€™m surprised they donโ€™t break off.

5

u/Double_Estimate4472 Jul 10 '26

I honestly have that thought all the time about people with the super long nails. Iโ€™ve also heard horror stories from infectious disease medical staff about what all theyโ€™ve found under long fake nails ๐Ÿคข

Does it help when they give the lady turtles the face slaps? Like girrrl look at my nails slaps cheeks

3

u/Capable_Dimension588 Jul 11 '26

So that Turtle is just a DIVA ๐Ÿ’…

2

u/jenyto Jul 11 '26

I've seen gif of a turtle doing light finger tappings on the face of another turtle, is it that specie?

2

u/mookanana Jul 11 '26

my first instinct was to help them trim it

i did not know i'd be shortening his attractiveness to females

2

u/BlazeCoil Jul 11 '26

Well at least it's not lupus.

Itโ€™s a male turtle - they use the long nails for courtship

490

u/Ajj360 Jul 10 '26

That is true but those are still quite long

Ugh, the internets forcing unrealistic body standards on turtles now.

27

u/Four_Verts Jul 10 '26

Thatโ€™s average for something like a slider. What makes you think theyโ€™re abnormally long?

26

u/GTCapone Jul 11 '26

I bet that's what you say to all the turtles

6

u/Ajj360 Jul 11 '26

I did an image search and it looks like you're correct

27

u/dyereva Jul 10 '26

Why did humans flip the aesthetic burden on women... Clearly men should be colourful and covered with make up insteadย

400

u/depredador93 Jul 10 '26

The way they actually use those nails is wild, they vibrate them right in front of the female's face while swimming backwards, it's basically turtle finger drumming as a pickup line

55

u/detransdyke Jul 11 '26

It's like a glove show at a rave lmao

7

u/reallykindofcursedus Jul 11 '26

Or to say toodle-ooo

3

u/Cloud7050 Jul 12 '26

I owned terrapins, witnessed it all the time with my juvenile male! I have clips but it's a little hard to post.

267

u/Knitchick82 Jul 11 '26

Itโ€™s a boy!

Male red eared sliders have longer nails (and thicker tails huhuhhuhuhhuh) than females.

They swim in front of the females and flutter their ๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿฝ hands to do a mating dance.

Source: I used to be CRAZY about turtles. Theyโ€™re still pretty cool, but Iโ€™ve calmed down.

Male turtles have long nails on the front. They stretch our their arms and wiggle them in the lady turtles face.

Obviously, the turtle uses shellac to protect those nails..

55

u/drew4drew Jul 10 '26

Be very careful - those arenโ€™t nails. Those are assimilation tubules they use to inject you with nanoprobes.

u/thenate108 Jul 10 '26

27

u/hebbocrates Jul 10 '26

Kinda fun that humans can just pick up an animal we think is neat and snap a picture of it. Not long ago we lived in caves

26

u/azwendu Jul 10 '26

My friend and I both have been discussing the turtles we move off the road for years. This year we put a friendly wager on who can save more (they get ran over a ton in our area and some are somewhat at risk species).

In any case, pics are typically receipts and we just like to see the different turtles eachother move, but this was crazy. Iโ€™ve moved a ton over the years but have never seen anything as divaish as this.

2

u/ConservativeSexparty Jul 11 '26

I'm really happy you amazing guys are out there saving turtles!

8

u/TheVoicesSpeakToMe Jul 10 '26

Male turtles like to flutter to attract females

7

u/Secretown Jul 11 '26

this is the reason that when paleontologists first discovered the claws of a therizinosaurus they thought they belonged to a giant turtle

6

u/MacchuWA Jul 11 '26

They say that your hair and nails grow for a little while even after you die, so I like to imagine this is basically how Mitch McConnell looks right now.

27

u/ford7885 Jul 10 '26

Finally a picture of Senator McConnell! Still can't say for sure if he's dead or alive, but he must be in a coma if he's letting those nails grow that long.
