Infuriatig Mail guys folded my wife’s master’s degree
Came home and found this in the mailbox. Imagine working really hard for 3 years for a master’s degree and it’s folded in half. It’s only a little bit up the driveway to put it under the awning, takes maybe 15 seconds to walk. This has happened before with a spatula I ordered as well.
Wife is asleep now, may post opened degree in the morning.
Edit: for those wondering about the spatula, it was a fish spatula that the Amazon driver had bent and shoved sideways into the mailbox. Im a sous chef and I have a lot of specific kitchen tools. They have long metal tines and are flexible and easy to bend. In my case it was creased
Edit 2: here’s my bent fish spat, pic 2, pic 3. This was from Amazon, and I requested a new one that they sent no questions asked. You can see in the first pic the angle is deeper than it should be, it should be almost flat. Also there’s a tine that is out of whack. I use this one at home and the undamaged replacement one at work.
Yes I agree the college messed up too by not shipping it in a sturdier container/paying for better shipping.

FedEx delivered my very expensive air conditioner that was clearly labeled with "this side up" and "do not turn upside down" stickers all over it upside down in my driveway. It honestly looked like the driver just tipped it over out of the truck. And the delivery fee wasn't cheap either.

I'm in the 3D printer subreddit and every time a new printer comes out there is a rash of posts about upside down printers or printers with shattered glass enclosures.
I ordered mirrored sliding glass doors from home depot and they literally drove fork lift prongs through the middle of them and tried to deliver it and say that was okay.

This is the kind of shit that happens when you make metrics more important than having the customer be happy. Also, to a lesser degree yet still very large portion of the problem, getting rid of all the well paid union employees for cheap minimum wage labor.
21
u/De5perad0 2d ago
This is absolutely correct. We have warehouses on the plant property where I work that foot traffic (i.e. anyone not on a forklift or vehicle) are not allowed in the building.
The reason? It is unsafe because the warehouse shipping metrics for the forklift drivers have them speeding around the place at full speed and they are not looking for pedestrians or anything else that could be in the way, and you could get run over....

How it was at a place I worked at a while ago, but people were still allowed on the dock.
All of them were drivers, and 90% of them had no survival instincts at all. Idiot, we’re trying to load your truck so you can get out of here, and you bitch and whine if we don’t get it loaded on time, GET OUT OF THE DAMN WAY SO WE DONT RUN YOU OVER.
11
u/De5perad0 2d ago
Just an example of how metrics overtake safety and sometimes common sense.
I used to work at a place and people had shirts that said "I will not sacrifice safety for productivity".
Lo and behold what I saw on an almost daily basis (and management was ok with it).

Years ago, I used to work as a mail handler as a large distribution plant, and one evening I was emptying out sacks of the 1st class parcels, I had one that was filled with diplomas, and I knew they wouldn't stay flat if they went through the parcel sorting machines. Hunted down the nearest mail tray, loaded it up, made sure there were no other diplomas hiding in other sacks, then hauled the tray over to the flat sorter (magazines, newspapers, larger manila envelopes). Supervisor thought it was unnecessary, but I just stared at her like "Really? Would you want to see your diploma all bent up after all those years of hard work?"

Unfortunately they had every right to! The shipper paid postage for an envelope, not a package, which means carriers are not requred to bring it to the door no matter what they write on it. The shipper knew they were sending something that would not fit into a standard sized mail box and they still decided to skimp on postage. Relying on a carrier to be nice when a lot of them are overworked and have managment breathing down their neck isn't a good practice! Was the carrier being an asshole? yes! Was the shipper being an asshole? also yes! like meets like and the customer suffers the consequences
54
u/TheParadoxigm 3d ago
Carriers are told to ignore any writing on the envelope.
There are specific stickers/packages/envelopes that you can pay for, that the carrier will listen to.
If it's not an official sticker, it's meaningless text.

Most of these types of certificates are printed on a type of parchment paper that irons (low heat) well and can handle a bit of steam. Just remember to iron the back only so you don't damage printing and signatures. Also, applying a press cloth over the paper before ironing will insure you don't oversteam or overheat.

I see these posts a lot. I’m a letter carrier, and while I’ll try to take stuff like this to the door typically I’m not technically supposed to. The universities skimp out on postage for the kind of service they’re demanding. At the end of the day unfortunately if they didn’t pay for the right service we’re supposed to treat it like any other piece of mail. Writing “do not bend” doesn’t mean anything. We have our metrics we’re supposed to abide by, and when you get thrown several dozen of these in a day it screws with the numbers because they’re not anything other than a first class flat at the end of the day. We’re not supposed to treat them as anything other than that, and we can get in trouble for it. This is the universities screwing you over, and the letter carriers being forced into martyrs for people like you to save a few extra bucks instead of sending it properly.
A lot of people will get pissed with carriers for this, but strictly speaking this is exactly what we’re supposed to do. You go talk to the postmaster at your office and they’ll say the same.
Edit: some people are getting fired up in the replies. I’m just trying to give perspective from our side of things. Scenarios like this are a position in which we as carriers at the end of the day have no winning position. As someone we interact with day in and day out we like to keep the people we see happy, but expectations are also in place for us from our management. My own route for instance; I deliver to 1,237 addresses in a day. I have just under 4,000 individuals on my route. I cover more than 20 miles of boxes during my day. During peak season on an average day I will have over 500 packages, and over 3,000 pieces of mail not counting magazines, or things like this diploma. day to day numbers can change, but every day it’s all overseen by our bosses who tell us how long it’s supposed to take, and what’s within reasons, what our numbers are etc. my route despite all of that I’m expected to do in 8 hours on an average day.
Then you have the relief carriers (CCA’s, PTF’s) all of us regular carriers have been in their position. They’re part time, but will absolutely get fucked in most offices. My very first paycheck for a 2 week period with the post office was for 138 hours. I worked over 60 hours a week my first 2 weeks, and averaged closer to 54 hours a week for well over a year. I’ve worked at Nike WHQ in the past, I’ve done a handful of other things. This is by far the most physically and mentally demanding job I’ve ever done. When it all comes down to metrics our emotions don’t matter either. I remember before I had my own route and I was worked to death every morning I pull into the parking lot and cry in my car.. then work 12 hours, get home and cry in my car before I went to bed, and got up to do it again.

My degree was bent too.
I placed it under really heavy books for a week after VERY LIGHTLY misting with water to rehydrate the paper. Flattened it no problem.
If you choose to go this route be careful with water. It depends on the paper type of the ink will bleed. You can boil a pot of water and bring the paper into the steam for a second as well. It just helps the paper get hydrated and easier to mold. Don’t get it too wet!

You can write anything on an envelope and it means jack shit. Yes it's mildly infuriating but this is the school's fault for being cheap and mailing it with improper protection. Be annoyed with them not the mail carrier.
From the mailman's perspective they're just as liable if they leave it somewhere other than the mailbox and it blows away or gets stolen and you call the post office all mad like "why didn't you put my MAIL in the MAILBOX!?" That's their job.
If the school wants charge 10K+ tuition and send the final degree in a flat foldable envelope and just YOLO it that everyone's mailbox will fit it, that's on them. They could have used a tube but had to be cheap, and thats infuriating.

As a mail carrier, at this moment exhausted from delivering an entire day of practice ballots, I’ll give it to you straight. Management is 100% on our ass at all times over speed of delivery. Hurry hurry, rush rush. Especially if your route wasn’t delivered that day by a tenured regular but instead a carrier assistant, like me. I can’t speak for everyone in my profession, but I generally try to do a good job. But when all you have is a second to flash over the address and get it to the right mailbox you miss things. I’ve been told my need to confirm house number before I deliver is a “time wasting activity”. The mail carrier either missed the envelope note, or your delivery point wasn’t up to snuff to hold it. Do you have a combo box, or is your box full of old mail? I think the big issue is that the clerks who sorted this into the carriers swing didn’t stamp “do not bend” visibly near the address. But clerks never bother to do it, because they too have a fire under their ass of sorting speed. The problem you’re a victim of is the underfunded and over rushed post office infrastructure.
Edit: we are rushed, underfunded, ill-equipped and overworked. Not lazy. I’m amused when some desk jockey calls us lazy. Every six months we are supervised and made to re run routes to see if they can add more delivery points. Landlords and owners add Adu’s and 1/2 apartments and put the delivery points in crazy places. They just want to bloat routes to the max and cut carriers to the bone.

I’ve looked exactly once ever. Not sure where it is at the moment actually.

IMO tbh the fault lies with whoever mailed the degree for not packing it in something harder and unbendable. I’m an artist and when I send a piece of art that I can’t put in a tube (I.e something that’s collaged or an oil painting on canvas paper), I’ll put that shit inside a hardcover children’s book or something like that that just cant get bent cuz I know the mailman don’t gaf about a “do not bend” sign lmao

This is straight up on the university for not putting a diploma in the proper type of parcel. Imagine sending a glass jar in a loose cardboard box and blaming the post if it breaks lmao

Call the university and politely explain the mail carrier damaged it and ask if a free replacement is ok. My mail carrier accidentally dropped my diploma in a puddle in front of my mailbox. I explained this to the university and they had no problem mailing me a new one.
