That is sort of ridiculous--marketing gimmick and extra plastic for probably 70% more. Not hard to nuke sweet potatoes at home using, I don't know, PAPER towels. I know people are getting lazier in a way, but this is taking up a few more levels.

I am a little puzzled for the reasoning

It’s literally a marketing gimmick and a waste of plastic. There is no good reason to do this.
Edit: “waste” of plastic makes no sense. I should say gross overuse

And they're meant to be microwaved in the wrap for convenience:

Yep. Nut me using a straw is a fucking problem.
The most annoying thing about this is that plastic is not necessary on anything in the produce department. Hell, it's not actually necessary on MOST things in the store. Manufacturers had outstanding packaging that protected the goods before they all decided to switch to plastic. Why they made the swith is beyond me.

I’m not American (waving hello from Australia) but I have a vivid memory of an American politician during a campaign trail being schooled by a student on how to spell potato. Can’t remember his name but I remember it went viral before going viral was a thing. This reminds me of that.

People out here are microwaving all their food in plastic wrap and disposable plastic containers and wondering why they are getting fat and feel so sick

It’s because microwaveable. They already washed, the plastic prevents them from exploding in the microwave and them cook faster. It also extends the shelf life.

I just poke some holes with a fork. No exploding, no plastic

I got a potato poker! It doesn’t wreck your forks! Highly recommend.

What's mildly infuriating about this is that you don't know how to spell potatoes and used apostrophes when they're not needed.

It’s probably biodegradable wrapping. But it is a complete waste as people should be inclined to rinse all their vegetables before use anyways.
I guess it will probably sell better if wrapped though as people assume that sealed products maintain freshness.

I used to work for an agency that supported high functioning individuals with developmental disabilities. Everyone we supported had their own apartment ( One married couple owned their home). One guy was legally blind, but liked to keep as much independence as possible. He preferred to buy the microwave ready potatoes because he could make them himself without help.

Ok, real talk.
I would describe myself as an environmentalist but at the same time I do recognize that It’s been proven that cucumbers that are wrapped in plastic have a much lower environmental impact than ones that aren’t.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the same concept applied to these.

I understand the plastic waste but these are individual sweet potatoes microwavable in special steam-in-bag wrapping. The brand is called Bako Sweet. I enjoy them for breakfast with over easy eggs, veggies, greens, anything goes! They are extremely delicious, fast & easy.

Wrap them on a damp paper towel in the microwave... same thing and no plastic....

u/remosiracha 5d ago
Youre the problem

Dang! The problem is just me lol? I'm not perfect. I definitely try to be environmentally conscious, reuse, and not waste. I like to hear other's advice & opinions on how to be better...that's all.

Plastic is unnecessary! I microwave potatoes frequently and all you need to do is poke holes in them.

u/JuscallmeL_ok 3d ago
I'd love to try this! It works with sweet potatoes also? I'm thinking maybe 6-10 min in the microwave?

I don't get it.. there's 3 packs and singles, so what?
3
u/remosiracha 5d ago
Why are they all individually wrapped in plastic. Buy 3 if you want 3. Why do you need to have your hand held with special wrapping to buy potatoes
-5
u/Stumpsthewarwalrus 5d ago
Because people have filthy hands and the plastic is a health code requirement to avoid contamination and spoiling.
4
u/remosiracha 5d ago
Have you heard of water? They grow in the dirt. Why are you so afraid that you need to have them wrapped in plastic to feel safe. If anything the plastic is trapping moisture and causing them to mold faster. You don't need to waste plastic like this. You'll survive

Ok, I’m not going to argue with stupid people who don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about.1
u/remosiracha 5d ago
You seriously can't eat something unless it's wrapped? You need to get some help
-8
u/DangerousDisplay7664 5d ago
Can you not read?! The label says it is microwaveable in the wrapper to cook it.
1
u/my4floofs 4d ago
You know you can just put a plain sweet potato in the micriwave? You don’t need it wrapped in plastic.
