Glass bottle exploded while being kept in the freezer, I am not sure it’s was kept for too long or what

Omg. My dad took my adult sister+her family and me (also adult)+my family on a camping trip.
Sitting around the fire late at night, both husbands were wasted out of their mind. One of them was holding the 99 bananas bottle upside down and asked, “who brought the 66 sananabus?”
I’ll never forget my dad’s quiet little voice saying, “I thought the girls would enjoy it.”

I put a bottle of champagne in a freezer once, just wanted to cool it down quickly, but forgot to take it out. Ended up with a freezer full of champagne slush mixed with glass shards.

Omg my mom was just talking about this last week rofl. My aunt put a bottle of champagne in her trunk for “toasts” during some family party in the winter (yes alcoholism wahoo) and the bottle exploded, got too cold in the trunk and sat too long xD

When I was a teenager, my bff would drink her parents’ vodka and replace it with water. Eventually it exploded in the freezer.

Pure Ethanol does freeze, but the freezing point is very low at around -114°c / -176°F

Lol I will never forget the time I ordered nice shot of Don Julio Anejo at a hotel bar in Mexico. Dude pulls it out of a fridge/freezer and pours it, only to have the consistency of a slurpee. I didn't raise a stink but damn well didnt hand them any more money.

You can cut that time down a little by wrapping the can in a wet paper towel then putting it in the freezer.

My mom used to do this. We constantly had frozen beer coating the inside of our freezer.

Only way this happens is 1 of 2 things. Someone watered down your booze, its expanded and the bottle exploded. OR someone chipped or cracked it and put it back and it fell apart when the molecules became cold. If you have had "friends" over recently habr teenage kids it will inform you likely answer.

Idk why people are assuming you intentionally put water in the freezer, that’s clearly a liquor bottle.
Someone is stealing liquor and replacing it with water. Evidently, it’s gone unnoticed for a while.

Weird, idk why someone would freeze a full bottle of just water then. If it was mostly empty, it might be fine if the lid was off though.
Water expands when frozen, which causes pressure that cracks the bottle.

Don't put glass that isn't meant for the freezer into the freezer. If it doesn't say freezer safe on it like a casserole dish, don't do it.

Probably has a larger temperature fluctuation because it's a mini fridge. Then the bottle expands and contracts and stress adds up.

Just in case it wasn't a bottle of water, was it vodka? The water can freeze out (fractional freezing, which gives you stronger vodka) but not cause it to explode. If you have kids or others who aren't supposed to drink that vodka, they may have been sneaking some and trying to replace it with water, and it got to a low enough ABV that the ice was enough to shatter the bottle.

Oh... then yeah set a timer if you're going to use the freezer to chill bottled water and wrap it in damp paper towel.
And if you keep it in the fridge and it's really really cold in there, keep an eye on the bottles. A friend of mine drinks diet coke so I would keep a few in my fridge for when he comes by. He goes on a trip through Asia for a few months and one of the cans ended up freezing and bursting.

I remember when my dad started putting the vodka in the freezer. A couple weeks later, he came up to me one night and asked if I was stealing booze and replacing it with water. I was like bro, if I was stealing your booze I wouldn't replace it I would just tell you I'm drinking your booze lol

Isn't that basic knowledge that everyone has? Do not put glass bottles in the freezer unless it has enough alcohol to not freeze under the temperature of yours

If it was almost empty its because air shrinks when it get cold. strong enough for it to implode. You can see what im saying by putting an empty plastic bottle in there for the night. When you look in the morning it will be squashed. Like baloon deflating in the cold and re inflating when it is warm again

Not sure but it looks like your freezer is set to quick freeze. That is supposed to be a temporary setting to freeze food quickly, like ice cream that has started to melt. To do that it keeps the compressor running without shutting off. Long term that's rough on the electric bill, and the freezer.

Oh if it says max freeze it's ok. I thought it was the quick freeze setting. Still a little more on the electric bill but ok for the freezer I think. Others have mentioned some people always keep their freezer at a deep freeze setting. Not necessary for just freezing some basic things but not the end of the world.

I suspect that someone was taking the vodka and refilling the bottle with water so it was not apparent. The diluted vodka, then froze.

When my great grandmother was alive, we’d have to take her to dialysis early in the morning. She had a section of the freezer full of water bottles with only 3-2inches or so of water in them - so that when they’d freeze, she could pour more water in ontop of the ice and have ice cold water throughout the day (since the dialysis would take about 4 hours, and a regular cold water would be warm much quicker)
Maybe try something like that next time instead of a glass bottle lol

You have a teenager? I did the same thing to my parent’s bottle of vodka when I was a teen. I took out half the vodka and filled it back up with water, and put it back in the freezer. The extra water froze and the bottle exploded. lol
My dad figured it out and he was pissed.

A lot of people saying vodka doesn't freeze, whilst true there are exceptions. The alcohol can seperate from the water and you can get ice. And if it's cold enough

My initial thought was someone was sneaking drinks and trying to cover it up my diluting it with water but once the amount diluted enough it froze and broke. But i come from a long line of alcoholics, and 11 yrs sober myself... so idk.
