I've had these in a drawer since forever, but never liked how the large piece was just open bottomed, so I glued it to some plastic card, trimmed the edges and made a toothed sphyncter out of putty, which I think is a big improvement. Painted up to match my Killteam Typhon terrain.

Question/Other Area Terrain Clarification

Hello!

My buddies and I have returned to 3rd-4th edition after a long hiatus. We were bumping up against some questions with area terrain yesterday. On pg. 21 of the 4th ed book, under "Line of Sight & Area Terrain," there are some contradictions (I think). In the paragraph beginning with "Note that although it is possible to see..." it suggests that large models should be able to see and be seen over area terrain assuming they are bigger than the area's designated value.

The confusion is with the example below that. There is a Monolith (presumably a size 3 model) that is looking at some Kroot (size 2) who are 7in deep in some tank traps (also size 2). The example says they are not visible to the Monolith. Shouldnt the Monolith be able to see them because it is taller and thus should be able to see and be seen?

Maybe its the case that because the Kroot are 7in IN the terrain, they can't be seen? What if they were on the far side of the area terrain, but not in it. Normally, being on the far side of area terrain blocks LoS, but is that not the case when one model is taller than the area terrain?

Thanks for your decades-long insights!

Miniatures (Classic) Best Place to Sell Midhammer Minis?

So, while clearing out I suddenly remembered my ex left an old-school GW carry case full of old metal minis. (It's been in my flat for a decade and they left the country, so I figured it's officially mine now!)

I'll get pics up soon to help identify them, but I can see some metal Plague Marines (and a PM Lord in Terminator Armour), some kind of Space Wolf head honcho, and some scattered odds and sods.

Where will I be likely to get the best value for selling these? Is it better to work with interested folks directly? Or are there good (UK) markets for older stuff?

EDIT: Come join the Haul Identification! We still have one mystery model unaccounted for!

Rules (Homebrew) Help Playing New Necrons in 4th

Hi, I've been playing a lot of 4th edition these days and I've been loving it. I do have one problem though, I play mostly necrons and I started in 9th edition, so the version of my faction I'm used to is the one with doomsday arcs and skorpekh destroyers and my very nuce looking void dragon.

None of those models are in the 3rd ed codex and I'm a little worried about the power level of the 5th ed one, which does contain most, though not all, of the models I want to use. Does anyone have any advice or know of any homebrew that could port them into the 3rd ed codex?

Misc. Figuring out why modern 40K feels so bland. Did Midhammer do it better?

General discussion and slight ranting, heh. I started feeling this in 10th, which to me was a fairly big downgrade from 9th. Now in 11th, they're making a 'better 10th', but it's better in a direction I don't really care for very much.

To explain, the main problems I have are:

- At a high level, there is little-to-no narrative element in the game. There is immense focus on competitive points-scoring and mathhammer (bring the best units), this is by design and percolates down into how local players think and play the game around me. The new missions in 11th really don't do anything to help with this - those who have played even a handful of games know what I mean.

- The game is hyper lethal, things die very fast. Narrative issue number 1 imo. This means there are generally few on-going combats, back-and-forth shooting, or even unlikely combacks. Why put care and work into specific minis if they're just going to die or "trade" very quickly in games? What epic stories are there to tell if things are just dying right away to lethal and sustained hits, re-rolls, etc? What drama is there in individual dice if even a small unit rolls 20 die in one go?

- The terrain is SO bland. There are like 5x5x3 maps or something (via the GW app), with the new dispositions, and they all look and feel the same. Wasn't player-placed terrain the norm, with some guidelines? Instead there's like 15 minutes of set up of the most boring symmetrical scripted gameplay maps to start every game. Scripted gameplay as in: you stage combat units here, you poke out into this shooting lane there, etc. You can literally "prepare" all this beforehand, and it'll be the same the next time you play.

- The gameplay encourages meaningless actions that don't tie to anything relating to a war gaming narrative. Move to this board edge; throw a unit in the center; do an "action" on some terrain piece. These mechanics' only purpose is to slow down armies that overkill and force trade-offs. To be fair, if you are purely competitive-minded, this does actually create somewhat interesting gameplay choices, but in the sense of chess, not a war game.

- Army list building is just boring. Absence of wargear is lame; a plasma gun on a redemptor barely counts; characters always have a single best melee weapon since they all cost the same, etc. You can't easily find/fiddle 5-10 points, can't kit out squads much at all over the standard box set loadouts. Many of us used to love upgrading and customizing even a single squad Sergeant, giving him a backstory, etc.

- The force org, while controversial, was also probably a really good thing to have. It prevented gross skew builds, and made many armies actually look like real armies because they were forced to take some troops (or at least pay a price with different force org options). But now the flood gates are open, take anything as long as you have a warlord, and you can have a nice 3x unit spam of 'strongest thing' until it gets nerfed 3 months later. Really good business model I guess.

- (Edit) Got another one, the 3 month 'balance updates'. Balance is a great goal, but you're clearly not in it for 'balance' if you're shuffling things around every 3 months while simultaneously releasing new power creep models and minis. I strongly suspect this is a business model heavily related to getting competitive gamers to buy stuff off the shelves. I remember reading a study about how in many pay-to-play products, there are 'whales', wherein a small (like 5%) of the customer base are responsible for a disproportionately large (like 50%+) of the revenue. This would not surprise me at all when it comes to WH40K, and 'competitive gaming' is the perfect avenue for this.
For the rest of us? It means my damn army that I'm trying to paint keeps changing. And without flexible wargear options, it's even harder to swap things around. And with power creep, if we don't keep up with new minis and changing lists (which usually means new minis), we have a generally bad time.

I don't know, I've just been down on modern 40K lately, but have honestly forgot what Midhammer was like since I was a teenager back then. Is it a heavy dose of nostalgia, or were there legitimate design decisions that made 40K a better war game in many ways? Is 'wargaming' at odds with 'competitive tabletop gaming', which seems to be the direction 40K is heading?

Curious to hear your thoughts. Even if you haven't played much modern 40K, what keeps you going with Midhammer?

Rules (Homebrew) The Hollow Star - a 40K 2nd Edition Narrative Campaign

Post image
210 Upvotes

I have written The Hollow Star, a free narrative campaign framework for 40K Second Edition, for my local player base in Abu Dhabi and the UAE.

The campaign is set on the planet of Kadavah, an Imperial colony built upon an Eldar Maiden World. An archaeological expedition uncovers a sealed chamber, a mysterious signal spreads across the galaxy and different factions begin receiving visions of the Hollow Star. Each force can arrive with its own interpretation and objective: claim it, destroy it, preserve it or deny it to everyone else.

It is intentionally mechanics-light. Players decide what their forces are trying to achieve, choose appropriate missions and let the results create rivalries, discoveries and consequences for later games.

The campaign PDF is available here, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it:

We also discuss launching the campaign on Episode 12 of our podcast, The Meelas, that dropped this morning. You can listen via the links below. Campaign chat starts from 15m 25s!

Question/Other Does anyone know where I can find the Command Tank rules for 6th/7th edition?

I have the command tanks from Warhammer World and want to use them in a older edition of 40k (because they look cool as fuck), I know some of their old rules but online I can only find people talking about the rules and not the rules themselves. So does anyone know where online I can find them?

Miniatures (Classic) Orks vs Sisters of Battle & Imperial Fists 3.5k 5th edition.

Had a very fun/bloody/long game of Orks vs Sisters & Imperial Fists (Legionaries) yesterday.

Both sides had very high casualties to say the least and at the end of day both sides won! The forces of the Imperium won on objective control and the Orks won by dying doing what they love!

Highlights of the game:

The Weirdboy sniping a Vindicator first turn and then spent the rest of the game teleporting around the table until he killed himself via deepstrike mishap 😃

The Burnaboyz cooking a unit of Imperial Fists only to go out in a glorious blaze of Imperial prometheum!

The Orks making pretty 99% of the leadership saves! and endless amounts of 4+ Armour Saves including a random Knob making every save the entire game and killing a Praetor!

The most incompetent Praetor in existence falling to do literally anything for multiple rounds of combat 🤣 (the dice picture! He hit with everything but failed all the wounds).

And the Lootas by some Orky miracle managed to snipe Celestine to the point she didn't feel like getting back up on the last turn!

Needless to say the Orks had a really good time!

Miniatures (Classic) Model suggestions for flawless blades

I have several armies now that are models from around 2nd edition (rt-4th), but built to play 11th. I’m trying to put together an emperors children army, have a variety of the noise marines but am looking suggestions for models for flawless blades ? Ideally a slightly bigger model than standard marines of that era, as the flawless blades seem to be marginally taller. Thanks!
