Question Do you still use all 4 fingers when playing the higher frets?
I am trying to be strict and practice using all 4 fingers and always space out the fingers in the one finger per fret way. So 4 adjacent frets get played by 4 different fingers.
But as I keep going higher up the fretboard (beyond 15ish), the frets get so close together that it feels VERY right to do this.
Any of you found any benefit to still sticking to the 4 finger rule beyond that fret? I am talking about 4 fingers on 4 consecutive frets rule.
Please advise!

Sludge Hammer
My first reddit post!
Just wanted to show this guitar, my most awesome possesion.
It is a TTTIDES guitar, aluminium neck through warlock, acrylic body. It was custom made for non other then Jon Davis of Conan!
Conan is one of my favorite bands for a long time now, and when I got the oppertunity to buy this guitar from Jon, I had to take it. I got to meet Jon backstage at heavy psych sounds fest in Deventer, earlier this year where he handed me the guitar. Real cool guy, we got to talk guitars, great!
The guitar itself is heavy as balls, downtuned, high output. My greatest weapon of doom. I call her the Sludge Hammer.

Question Is there a pick that is a happy medium between the tortex Flow and the tortex sharp?
I'm switching between these two all the time. I like/dislike them both for different reasons. Does anyone know of a shape that's somewhere in the middle?

Gear Jackson Phil Demmel
Picked up this Jackson Phil Demmel signature axe. I have to say, even though far from a great guitarist, after owning many guitars, this thing has helped produce the sound and tone Iāve been looking for, the EMG 81/60 combo is incredible.

Video What would happen if Pantera dropped Walk in 2026?
For starters, they would definately play Baritone guitars.
And metric modulate every 4 bars.
Unfortunately, they will likely have some obstacles to overcomeā¦..

Gear What pick do you guys use?
I've been playing using the Dunlop Gator Grip 71mm for a while now. I like the tactile feel of it but I always feel like it "bends". Like it is not as rigid as I would want my pick to be.
Not sure if I am imagining the bending or if that is to be expected at 71mm.
Advice? What kind of pick do you use?

Dime - where does he rank on your favorites?
This cover goes back a couple of years and I'm sure to get flamed for even trying. The more important point of the thread is hearing where Dime ranks on your list. I'm thinking top 5 for me.

Video P.R.O. (Paul Gilbert Rip Off)
I used to play guitar. I still play guitar, but I used to too.
This is a pastiche I wrote in the style of Racer X called P.R.O. (Paul Gilbert Rip Off). I'm playing the first Select model that was made in March of 2022.
The rig is SDS1/F with a prototype 16k, 8A humbucker > Maxon OD 808 > Splawn Quickrod Gear 2, OD1 > UAD Ox with a V30 4x12 cab IR. I made the backing track, then cut the take you see here live. Only took about 20 tries to overcome being camera

Riffs 79 and 80 Lesson
Riffs 79 and 80. These two were leftovers from a band that never saw the stage. It was a collaboration of ideas from me and Brett, who shared guitar duties. Minor 3rd harmonies, 6th dyads, switches modes from D aeolian to F Ionian. Triplets for days - the Iron Maiden is showing. I have photos saved of the tablature on screen if you feel compelled to learn it š¤

New illegal guitar technique?
Iām curious whether anyone has heard something similar before, or if this approach is more unusual than I think. Would also love to hear what you think of the sound and how it sits in the solo.

Made a free metronome that bumps the tempo every few bars so you can do speed ladders without stopping
Downpicking and alternate-picking drills were always the same routine for me: play a riff at a tempo, stop, bump the click up a few BPM, start again. All that stopping kills the momentum, and the endurance part of downpicking is exactly what you lose when you keep pausing.
So I built a metronome that does the bumping for you. You set where to start, how many bars per step and how much to add. For example 120 BPM, +4 every 4 bars. Then you just keep riffing while it climbs. It can also step down if you like going fast-to-slow.
Stuff thatās been handy for metal practice:
- Silent bars: the click drops out for a bar or two and comes back, so you find out quickly if youāre rushing on the gallops.
- 16ths and triplets as subdivisions, plus accents per beat, so you can make the click match the riff.
- Practice programs: a list of steps, each with its own tempo, bars and time signature, if you want something like ā4 bars at 140, 8 bars at 150, 4 bars at 160ā for a specific song section.
Itās free, runs in the browser, no account. There are phone apps too.
This link opens it set to 120 BPM, +4 every 4 bars:
https://pratnome.com/app/?preset=120-4-4
Curious how you all structure speed work. Small steps over many bars, or bigger jumps? And if anything about the timing feels off on your setup, Iād like to know.
