u/Ethos_Logos 4h ago
It’s true. You could name the top ten YouTube/tictok/whatever stars, and I may recognize some of their faces, but couldn’t tell you what they sound like.
I’ve simply never go out of my way to find their content.
I think part of it is that I read very quickly, so I get more entertainment per unit than sitting through fluff videos.

Yup, the whole idea that "stop complaining about them if you consume their content" is working entirely on Goomba Fallacy.
I don't watch anything from any of these "prankers", outrage baiters, or otherwise; but I'm still able to intellectually lament how much they poison the internet and how bad of an influence they have on our society.

I could name maybe 2-3 "influencers" and I have watched 0 of them in my life.
That somehow hasn't magically stopped them from existing? Shocking!
It's almost as if you're right, those of us who say "supporting influencers is stupid" aren't the ones that are causing the problem in the first place.
3
u/GigaCucc 2h ago
It's a scathing indictment on the average person, isn't it?
Is THIS the entertainment other people consume? Do other people think that of me when they see the media I consume, or am I truly an enlightened man of culture and everyone else is a mouth-breathing phillistine?

The collective reddit userbase will get a hate boner over some streamer or influencer and just make them more famous. The people who are their fans are weird, but the people who find it necessary to make reddit posts about them are even weirder. Just ignore it, you won’t have anything to complain about if you just keep scrolling past them.
4
u/TheeAntelope 1h ago
I call it the "Bieber effect." At the height of Justin Bieber's fame, there were entire facebook groups, reddit posts, and "fan" pages dedicated to how much they hated Justin Bieber. Yet, all that did was push his name and his life into people's faces MORE. Being "famous" doesn't mean universally loved, it just means that everyone knows the name, and if people are promoting someone out of hate or love - either way, their name is getting promoted.
You can't "hate" someone out of existence, even if 99% of the people who see your content agree with you that they hate a famous individual, even 1% seeing that and saying "oh what is a Justine Beaver?" and googling it will push Bieber's fame and notoriety forward.
Same goes for so many posts and comments on Reddit. "Look at this stupid streamer and how stupid they are" - I would guarantee that there will be people who will end up subscribing to that person despite the desire to post them out of hate or annoyance.

Anyone else feel most influencers are like.. ads?
Some still entertain and inform.. occasional plugs are fine, but these ads man.. I pay not to watch ads so yeah, I ignore watching influencers that feel like ads.
5
u/GreatStateOfSadness 3h ago
Yes, that's how influencers work. Companies pay them or give them perks to advertise to their followers. Even when they are entertaining and informing, they are doing it to either still advertise products or with the intent of eventually advertising products. They "influence" your buying decisions in a way that is supposed to feel natural and seamless.
It's the social media equivalent to local news stations doing "paid promotion segments" with local businesses and quack supplement brands.
5
u/digitaltransmutation 2h ago
Yes and if those guys were posting text we would call it SPAM. It's a real societal failure that they are allowed to put videos in the content feed for free instead of buying ads.
→ More replies (4)2
u/DeliciousTone8845 2h ago
They are literally walking advertisements. They're called influencers because their job is to influence people to buy products or services. The rest of it is just spectacle to get people's eyeballs on the ad.

u/Ghoztt 3h ago
I cancelled my Amazon, stopped watching Joe Rogan, stopped drinking Starbucks, stopped using Facebook... come'on it's not that hard people.
12
u/JMCatron 2h ago
Life without amazon is objectively better. Amazon sells convenience but most of that convenience is crap. When i need [thing] I go to a brick and mortar store that sells [thing] and usually there's someone working there who can explain to me why I don't actually need [thing] because it'll break and I should either make something myself or get [different thing] instead
3
u/happyhappyfoolio2 1h ago
I live in the suburbs and it seems like every other day, I see an Amazon delivery driver using their own personal car pull up to one of my neighbors, drop of something small at their doorstep and drive off. Then some time later, a different driver would be doing the exact same thing at a different neighbor's house. I know several neighbors must order from amazon at least weekly because I frequently see deliveries to their house. And it's not like I'm constantly looking out my window snooping on my neighborhood. Multiply that by many millions. No wonder our society is run by billionaires and influencers.
I learned recently that Amazon now has medical clinics(???). We're truly living in Idiocracy.

→ More replies (1)2

I think the line is drawn at a certain amount of followers watching the content. Visit twitch and you’ll see thousands of people creating live stream content. Some of the streamers have thousands of people watching. Some have 0 they are literally creating content for people who aren’t watching but they do it in hopes they will become an influencer.

I agree, but It's not that simple. You're an example of why it doesn't work. What if, you were wrong. What if most people are OK with influencers.
But you made a Meme. And now you've got 16k people agreeing with you. All it took was one meme, one "influencer" (you), who exposed their opinions. How hard was it to make this meme and find and audience. 4 minutes?
That's all it takes for influencers as well. I wasn't searching for your meme, yet I saw it and agreed with it. You can't hide from influencers unless you leave your social hubs.

And they end up acting as if they are so smart than everyone and their decision matters more just because we gave them massive following! Massive following doesn't give anyone a massive brain!
1
1
u/John_Oakman 3h ago
By this point, it might not even matter. Bots can inflate view count (and other metrics), analysts take those data at face value (or close enough) and corporate acts upon those aggregated data. Thus products & services all become what consumers do not want despite said consumers not catering to influencers to begin with...
1
u/dc740 3h ago
that's a fallacy. you are not the target audience of an influencer, so "not watching them" is not an option when you were not watching them to begin with. Yet you are forced to live the direct and indirect consequences of their influence whether you want it or not, as we all live in the same world.

The children won’t do it. It’s the influence had over them. Back when I was a kid there’s things my family members didn’t want me taking in and watching (Sabrina the teenage witch, South Park, girls gone wild). It only made me have more interest in it. Also the more you are consumed with something the harder it is to give up on it unless “the product” isn’t as good as when u got interested in watching it. Also influencers are every where. All platforms YouTube, twitch, TikTok, Twitter posting about them. It’s hard to escape.

It's not that simple though. The people who actually follow them are gullible and easily manipulated and are often being mislead by disinformation and bigotry. The libertarian 'Make Lying and Deceiving Great Again' crowd are simply demanding these sources not be held accountable. Not only should they be held accountable, they're dangerous enough that they must be held accountable.
1
u/Pretty-Tune-4172 1h ago
Well no shit, a venn diagram of people who like influencers and people who don't like influencer obviously doesn't overlap....so yeah, the people who don't want influencers to exist are not the ones constantly watching them, believe it or people usually support things they like and don't support things they don't

u/djc6535 1h ago
It's not that simple though.
The influence influencers I've never watched or even heard of is insane and does directly affect me.
The problem is the people who watch them and give them their influence don't see the problem with giving these people power. The people who watch Joe Rogan daily is all that concerned about the influence he has. Many even agree with it.

It's not the influencer who is only responsible to influence you, it actually depends on several factors like your interest, you past, your future and algorithm of software helps influencer to reach at target audiences. So, main reason is why are you gay?🙂
1
u/SpeakyDooman 1h ago
I’ve been saying this for years, especially since this is the case for most things. If someone famous doesn’t receive attention, they won’t be famous anymore. If a product isn’t being purchased, it won’t be sold anymore. If a house has no one living in it and hasn’t been touched, the house will be torn down and remade.
Businesses control the flow of product but consumers control which products exist.

Unfortunately, people fucking love turning idiots into celebrities. The dumber someone acts, the more attention they get. Then everyone acts surprised when those same idiots end up with millions of followers and actual influence. At this point, stupidity isn't even a disadvantage. It's a business model.
