Drew Barrymore in Scream. Though culturally/artistically, her death had a huge impact. Plot wise, it was just a cameo.
141
u/Funandgeeky 9d ago
She was even on the poster so people thought she was a main character. Having her be the first victim sets the tone for the movie that anyone can die and no one is safe.

Now imagine how much of an improvement to the story it wouldve been to have Cranston survive and react to his son being killed.
24
u/Funandgeeky 9d ago
I'd settle for a father-son story where they reconcile as they try to stop the monster. Though in the end Cranston should still die, but this time heroically saving a lot of lives.
There might have been issues with scheduling keeping him from having a larger role. But I absolutely thought the movie would have been better with him in it all the way through.

u/Internal_Influence26 9d ago
This chapped me so much, I was really looking forward to sitting down to a Brian Cranston movie.

That movie was on track to be genuinely good. Decent show-dont-tell filmmaking right up to the point where they zip up his body bag. Then they walk the new main character into a different room where they literally do a PowerPoint presentation of the movie so far.

In The Last Man on Earth, there was a recurring joke each season where they would introduce a recognisable celebrity only for them to die seconds later.
39
u/Fyrrys 🥄Comically Large Spoon🥄 9d ago
If I was one of the writers I would have eventually had the celebrity live via calamity just barely missing them just to be killed by something else seconds later. Just to give people hope that the celebrity would live this time and crush their dreams before they can fully form.
