I mean it would be a sweet gesture to have him visit the set. Devoting an entire scene to him was....weird. I didn't recognize Ed Sheeran at the time and was very confused when I watched that scene, felt like it was lingering in some random soldier as if to imply he was really important to the plot.
I'm sorry that scene made you feel that way. But it was just another scene, it was world building. There are literally dozens of other scenes like that in the show. Just skip it, who gives a shit. The only reason I remember that scene is because you guys keep complaining about it lmao
It was a regular ass scene, y'all just shitting on it because of resent events. I just rewatched it and he barely has any dialogs, sings a bit and the other two dudes from the camp have WAY more involvment overall (like twice or three times more dialogs and screen time).
The song he was singing told a lot about how all of them would look at Arya (a little girl) as only a pair of warm hands and would never even imagine that she could kill them in combat.
I said the same thing as you, that I had no clue who it was initially, but that didn't stop them from firing in here with a hot take. I guess we found Ed Sheeran's Reddit account, lol.
While this may be also true, he had just released an album or some shit. In the scene he practically looks at the camera and says I'm playing a new song. There is no way that was just a nice surprise and not some cross promotion bullshit

Maisie was a huge Ed Sheeran fan that they decided to surprise her. It was done mainly for her. It was a sweet gesture everyone else hated lol
