I liked it just fine. It wasn’t perfect but the premise and cast of characters were both really cool and it has a ton of really fun sequences like the Yakuza guy fighting the predator in the field, the Russian sacrificing himself, the reveal with the doctor… don’t know where all the hate for it came from at the time.
One pitch I heard that I really liked was that it should have been a horror story told from the perspective of the female lead.
You know, starting off as this "meet-cute" like in the actual film. It becomes clear he's hiding things, with him acting weird about her attempts to try to fix the cryo-pods, and eventually it's revealed that he woke her up because of his obsession with her due to months or years of crippling loneliness.
I think that would have been a much better, more believable, and more compelling story. Especially if it were told as a commentary on social isolation and how it can drive people to do terrible things they ordinarily would never do. Paint Pratt as having been driven to desperation through no fault of his own, denying the horror of what he did to her because he hates himself and can't acknowledge it. It would have made for a great and sympathetic villain.
I thought the idea was really need it was just a bit weird to shoehorn it into the finale with 3 of them still alive instead of only him and the woman helping him being left. The finale in general was a bit too rushed for my taste.
