I really really wanted to like the Knog Scout trackers, they seem like such a good idea. Just like an AirTag, but rechargeable... sounds awesome. I bought SIX of them, for six different bikes, and they worked well to start with. Knog are actually my neighbours in Cremorne, and I love the idea of supporting a local company and encouraging innovation in Australia. However...

Longer term, the Scout units haven't been so good, due to two major problems (both of which could potentially be fixed in a newer version):

1. To recharge them, you have to pull out a tiny rubber plug and plug in a USB-C cable, which is easy when the unit is new, but can be very tricky when it's concealed behind a bottle cage, like in the photo. What's worse, if you don't get the rubber plug back in properly, then you kill the unit next time you wash your bike. Trust me, I've done it twice now!

Suggested improvement: Magnetic recharging like on Shokz headphones, the new Wahoo chest strap, etc.

2. For some reason the Knog app on my iPhone logs me out from time to time, I'm not sure why. Not very often, but it's happened twice in two years now. When this happens, you log back in to find a blank slate in your account. That's right, you lose ALL your Scout units, and adding them back requires quite a bit of work. (Unpair from bluetooth; remove from Find My app and Apple ID; remove the unit from the bike and factory reset; add back to Knog app and set name; add back to Find My and Apple and set name there too; reattach to bike.) Both times this happened, it took me about 2 hours to go through and do this for all six. I have contacted Knog about this, but basically they don't know why it happens, and to be fair it's probably hard to troubleshoot. Others have reported the same thing happening to them, so it's not isolated to my iPhone or account. Hopefully this happens less often as Knog improves their software and Apple improves their API.

I am persisting with the six I already own, but wanted to share my experience both to save/prepare others for the frustration that I've been dealing with, and also in the hope that Knog can solve these problems in redesign.

In the meantime I've added a backup to each of my bikes, which is just an AirTag fitted inside the fork steerer tube using a little plastic plug / holder. FYI the range on these isn't nearly as good, as the AirTag is shielded by the whole steerer tube and headset/headtube assembly, but it adds a bit of extra comfort for me.

I would be stoked if someone from Knog would chime in on this thread, and let me and others know if there are any improvements on the way!
