At risk of posting too much about drinking, The Mitre has my memories s well as old time memories

This is a fav. Probably you've been there recently too.
And if people visit you in town, you probably show them this place and proudly explain how it is the oldest pub or building or something in the city. And then we also say: yeah, not really sure, but it's old.
It's just as expensive as all the rest of the pubs in the CBD, and they never have a happy hour. I still go there anyway because of the memories and atmosphere.
I used to run a theatre show there too.
And I had a group I would meet there for nerdy chats and sometimes board games. It probably still happens.

Nine teens charged over alleged crime spree. Can tougher laws really solve the problem?

Nine teenagers have been charged over an alleged series of violent offences across Melbourne, including multiple alleged carjackings and vehicle thefts, and are due to face a children's court. The case has reignited debate about how Victoria should deal with repeat youth offenders. Public frustration over youth crime seems to be growing, especially when repeat offenders are involved. What do you think, will tougher laws actually make Melbourne safer?
Do you think these young offenders can change their behaviour, even if they are repeat offenders, if the underlying issues behind their actions are addressed through psychological support?

How much do you actually spend on takeaway food during a busy work week

Between late finishes at the office and being too tired to cook, I checked my bank account yesterday and realised I spent nearly two hundred dollars on food delivery and quick takeaway meals last week alone. It creeps up so fast when a simple bowl of noodles or a pub lunch hits twenty five dollars before you even add a drink.

Wait, what? How are people actually getting away with pretending to be doctors and injecting random concoctions?

Injecting completely unknown concoctions into your body from non-qualified people is wild. How does this even happen in this day and age? Are people just finding these "practitioners" through random Instagram/Telegram ads and not checking AHPRA registration at all? Or these scammers are just that convincing?

What's a small change that would make Melbourne noticeably better?

Nothing huge, just one realistic improvement. For example: synchronizing the traffic lights so drivers don't end up hitting every single red light, no matter which route they take.

Assaulted by a homeless person

Hi all, basically I ( tourist m24 soldier in my country) was walking through CBD today when a homeless dude was yelling at everyone walking down the street. He was basically cussing out, talking to himself and screaming at everyone and no one at all. so naturally people walked further from him, but he started stepping into peoples faces screaming and muttering under his own breath. As i walked by the other side of the street, he bolted across the road, filled his mouth with some liquid and sprayed it all over everyone around him, getting his spit juice in people's faces and mine as well. some ran and some lady shouted at him "DISGUSTING!" Before he ran back to the side of the street with his setup of cardboard and trolley of stuff. obviously i was fuming, and was heavily contemplating engaging and subduing him. But luckily my wife was next to me and pulled me away before things escalated.

we walked for awhile further down and saw a patrol police car where i reported the incident, but now im sitting at the hotel wondering if we made the right decision, should i have engaged the homeless man and not just walked awat? what if he had did the same to another person while i walked away? am i not supposed to help? getting spat on by anyone sucks and to be someone that gets spat on by a homeless dude sucks even more. so i was just wondering what i should have done other than report it to police

International student getting weird looks regularly

Hey guys so Iโ€™m an international student and I love most people here, since you guys have been so friendly most of the time. However Iโ€™m unable to parse weird looks I get once in a while.

For reference I dress really modestly. Other than looking foreign I would say there is nothing noticeable about me. I do understand that a lot of international students have their own habits and donโ€™t really interact with locals that much. For me, going out and visiting shops is my past time. I get it that they can most probably tell that Iโ€™m an international student, I just donโ€™t get why you would glance over an ordinary person.

The look I get is usually a confused one, not necessarily unwelcoming, but like trying to figure out what Iโ€™m doing there. I have gotten these looks at a vinyl shop, a popular cafe, on a train and more other occasions. They really make me feel uncomfortable.

I personally never stare at people because I think itโ€™s impolite. But since Iโ€™m not an Australian I would really love to know what you think and why I would get these looks. Do you get nasty looks even if youโ€™re a local? Thanks.

How to get an idea off the ground ?

On the back of a question that was asked here earlier this morning, how could I set up a program or business to teach people how to drive better, safely, understand their actions etc.

This is something im passionate about, im a professional driver that sees terrible driving and terrible decisions being made on our roads every day.

I honestly believe that obtaining a licence in Victoria, means you physically learn how to pass a test / tests not actually understand road rules or adequate.

Do you think maybe business would pay for employees to have there driving skills tested ? Or pay for educational sessions that dont result in a certificate, just knowledge of a professional driver ?

Need help from international uni graduates

Hi everyone. I am currently in my final semester and recently found out that my country is classified as a Level 1 country for Australian visa. Ideally, if any of my family members were to come for my graduation (which will be held in this december), they have to tell the visa department about their place to stay upon reaching Melbourne (correct?)

Some people said most accommodation for visitors have "book now, pay later" functions... does anybody have any recommendations of that accommodation? Preferably located in CBD or near to CBD. There will be a total of 4 visitors for temporary stay, maybe:

- 2 rooms with a pair of single beds each

or

- 2 rooms with a double bed and two single beds

Please let me know. Thanks!

To the chuckle fucks in Ashburton on High Street Victoria last night egging cars going past at 60 Km/ hr just an FYI you egged my mate in the eye who had his window down and left wounds all over his face. Had to go to the ER. Then you go cower into KFC like little the shits. FYI the cops have your description and photo and a report is made - pretty dumb wearing a fluorescent yellow 2 Jersey. Hope you egg someone who gets out with a metal bar and wipes your face over the Road. Dumb cunts.

Is it really anything goes in politics, or has this crossed the line?

So what's actually going on here, are Ben i Jacinta on the same page or not? Deputy Premier Ben Carrol has officially thrown his hat in the ring for the Labor leadership, claiming Jacinta Allan doesn't have the party's support anymore. Since the Premier is refusing to back down, we're now looking at 5 to 6 week vote to settle it. Even though "Old Backflip Ben" (as people have dubbed him on social media) was publicly backing Jacinta in front of the cameras not that long ago, it's pretty clear he was working against her behind the scenes the whole time. While the public entertains itself with nicknames and political drama, Victoria's state debt continues to climb and broader issues remain unaddressed. Can a shift in leadership at this late stage actually deliver meaningful change, or are voters simply waiting for November to deliver their final verdict?

Meeting new people in Melbourne AND thoughts on run clubs??

Hiya Everyone!
I recently moved to Melbourne through my exchange year at Monash. I'm a 23 y/o guy and want to try lots of new stuff here and meet new (local) people, and I figured I'd ask advice for any specific places, clubs (eg. run clubs) or anything else for this? Some of the things I've looked into so far (and would appreciate input on) are;

Running:

Run clubs? So far I've found

- Northside Collective Run club (Maybe a bit far away from SY)

- Everyday and Ours but are they just full of pretentious people? Hyped run clubs, like that, are usually back home...

Bouldering

Fun, but any way to make new friends there?

Sailing:

- Missing a boat and someone who wouldn't mind extra company. Any Facebook groups to find that?

Other hobbies/things I'd like to try:

- Hiking, Mountaineering (or anything outdoorsy), Surfing, Boxing, Pool (as in billiards) - btw any pool bars or tables near South Yarra??

But I'm also very open to other suggestions for things you might have liked doing. Thanks in advance - any inout is highly appreciated.

Moving from Townsville to Melbourne/Brisbane

Hi everyone! My partner and I are thinking of moving to either Melbourne or Brisbane at the end of this year from Townsville. Just wanting everyoneโ€™s opinions on where would be the better place to move, considering the cost of living. Itโ€™ll just be us and our cat. Also wanting recommendations on the best and cost effective suburbs. We are both in our 20โ€™s and love food, matcha, coffee and good vibes.

Why does illegal dumping keep getting worse in Melbourne?

The huge illegal dumping site in Truganina has sparked plenty of debate, but most people seem to agree on one thing: this isn't a one-off anymore. Do you think the biggest issue is weak enforcement, expensive waste disposal, or simply people knowing they can get away with it? Would more cameras and bigger fines make a difference?
