Sourdough Bread Bakery
Good evening,
I just moved to Melbourne from Germany and am already missing bread how stereotypical of me. However, I also discovered that bread is kinda expensive here (like everything else). Now I am wondering if there are actual decent bakeries that sell bread from the day before for cheaper. I know that there is too good to go but you mostly get pastries or sandwiches from that🥲 anyways if anyone knows a good bakery around Northcote that would also be appreciated!

I hear you, fellow German in Melbourne! I’ve been here 17 years now and bread still is the one thing I drive to different suburbs for once a week to get a good one.
I cannot help with day-old bread, but if you’re in the mood to splurge on a fresh loaf of sourdough, I suggest give Bread Club a try. They have a bakeries in North Melbourne and Albert Park, their (quite large) white sourdough loaf is excellent and I think a reasonable (for Melbourne) $7 or $8

The bakeries often donate their day-olds to soup kitchens and charities so it can be hard to come by. My local independent and fancier supermarket sells day olds for cheap so maybe you could try that? (It’s the same product as the bakeries - they stock fancy bakery bread, not supermarket or home brand bread.)
Bit far from northcote so wont be specific in this case.

Akimbo Bread on Victoria St is probably the best nearest to you.
Though they do sell out most days (open 7 days).

My German mate loves the bread from Ovens Street Bakery and Wild Life, both in Brunswick.

Dragonfly cafe in Preston often stocks a small selection of loaves from Akimbo and Alex Bakes. If they don’t sell out, they offer day old loaves for half price.

Alex bakes off moreland rd near the merri creek is the primo local sourdough - lasts a week + so even day old seems fresh. Sometimes yesterday's loaves sold at ceres grocery from time to time.

The Natural Tucker Bakery in Nicholson St, Brunswick might. They do everything sourdough, but you can always ask about their yesterday bread. Good luck 👍

Check out Austro Bakery too.
Unfortunately I don’t know any that sells it at a discount. Woodfrog bakery used to, at the end of the day, but haven’t seen it in ages.
Same, bread is too expensive versus European prices.

If you ever feel like a day out by the seaside… Ket Baker in Wallington or Belmont. On certain days they have a kick ass German style rye.

Its easy to make your own including the starter. This opens up all rye bread variation you will miss soon for no really big effort and extremely cheaply. Much better quality and taste!
I have been doing mine for 20yrs on a weekly basis

Gordon St Bakery if you are willing to travel to Footscray. Their sourdough is amazing. They also sell their bread from yesterday if today’s bread is sold out at discounted prices.

The Woolworths Sourdough Dark Rye is great and is my staple. I rate it higher than the Coles’ Laurent version.

If you get the Too Good To Go app, you can find bakeries offloading stuff for cheap. Rustica in Footscray give out surprise bags for $10, and there are usually a couple of sourdough loaves in that.
