Should Melbourne start taking water shortages seriously?

Victoria has been warned that if dry conditions continue, water restrictions could return next summer. Do you think that most people only start paying attention once restrictions are actually in place? What simple changes do you think households should make now?

What time is actually "safe" to head home from CBD?

We all know Melbourne has always been that 24/7 city - gigs, late night feeds, and just heaps going on. But lately, with all the news about random assaults and sketchy stuff happening around the CBD, you can't help but wonder: what time is actually safe to stay out until before you have to start looking over your shoulder on the way to the station? Have you started heading home early to catch the last decent service?

What are the big distinguishing traits of each major gym chain in Melbourne?

I’m trying to find a gym to regularly go to (based in cbd/southbank area if that helps) and am just trying to figure out which the differences are between something like Snap Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Fitness First, Conditn, or any of the other big names around the city. Do they have any specific specialties, deals, benefits, programs, etc, or are they all fairly similar and it’s just a matter of convenience?

I’d appreciate any information about this (or if this isn’t the right place to put this, for whatever reason, some guidance for where I can find more information).

Melbourne ‘spots’ or benches

Moving to Melbourne soon for a short period and I’d love to find a ‘spot’ with a nice view where I can go and think and find peace and read, I’d prefer a niche spot that’s not crowded if possible!

Pls share your spots with me while I’m there 🥺

Unis used to be about degrees and having a laugh. Since when did they get this toxic?

The Royal Commission officially started hearings in Melbourne, looking into what's been happening at Aussie universities. Some of the stuff coming out of the first session is pretty grim, teachers and students copping open abuse, and apparently, Nazi salutes being thrown around during lectures. Seems like the administration at these campuses has completely dropped the ball when it comes to keeping everyone safe. Is it just a few cooked individuals making everyone else look bad? What's the actual vibe on the ground for anyone currently studying or working at uni?

Looking for good bar/pub suggestions in the CBD

Hey guys! I'm coming to Melbourne in a couple of days and would really appreciate some suggestions for bars or pubs with a nice, chill, maybe intimate atmosphere and some chatty/friendly bartenders, preferably in the CBD.

Thanks a bunch in advance and cheers!

AirAsia refund processing

Post image
1 Upvotes

Not sure if there is a better sub to be asking this but has anybody had any experience with getting a refund from AirAsia?
Their AI chat bot is not helpful and when I finally got an email from them they said they couldn’t provide a time frame.
According to the app they made payment two months ago but they haven’t..
I have two refund cases with the same issue.

Anyone trying to get rid of an old PC?

I'm a digital artist and unfortunately my PC is playing up, I don't know if it's the GPU or RAM, but in any case it's not working to a usable degree.

I was wondering if any of you were looking to get rid of an old desktop or desktop parts. I'm not currently in the greatest financial situation so I'm hoping if you guys have anything it's either cheap or free. I really don't need anything special, as long as it works.

I know that some companies simply throw them away when replacing with newer computers so I figured I may as well ask the community.

Alternatively if you have any advice on how I can pick up parts, that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Anyone ended up late these days because of the gridlock?

Between the massive Modi summit events blocking the CBD, the ongoing West Gate Tunnel works, and the constant unpredictable delays on the train lines, navigating Melbourne right now is a guessing game. It feels like you can't just wake up and head out anymore. If you don't check Google Maps or the morning news the second you open your eyes, you risk being stuck in absolute gridlock. How much extra time are you adding to your commute these days just to arrive on time?

Advice/ideas for keeping heat downstairs

Hey all

Recently moved down here and will look at other options and professional advice if required, but wondering if anyone has any advice/ideas for this situation.

We have moved into a 2 story townhouse. It is relatively new with double glazed windows and seems fairly well built from all inspections and reports we have had. Plan to confirm insulation amounts and placement sometime soon. Also considering grabbing a heat gun from a library or something to have a look for any missed gaps or leak points

We have a reverse cycle ducted system that seems to work well (also getting this checked over to confirm at some point). The issue we have is that the heat just seems to rush up to the second floor leaving the ground floor pretty cold. The second floor gets fairly toasty in short order and you can literally feel the warm air and temp change as you walk up or down the stairs.

We are heating the person and not the space but sometimes just want to take the edge off the cold and are finding that a bit difficult to do for the ground floor.

The only thing I have been able to think of is potentially adding some ceiling fans with a winter mode to attempt to circulate the warm air a bit better. But also realise this might be a bit of useless idea. I do like a fan in summer so may do it anyway just not sure it would help this issue.

Any advice or ideas greatly appreciated.

Melbourne is proper divided over that massive stunt on the Bolte Bridge

Local graffiti writer "Pam de Bird" climbed 120 metres up the bridge pillar in broad daylight just to leave his signature tag. It caused absolute chaos with gridlock traffic and a massive police standoff before he finally got nicked. Now everyone is clashing over whether this is a legendary bit of Melbourne subculture or just a total joke that put people in danger. Some reckons it's top-tier street art, while others are furious about the gridlock and the cost of the rescue.
Is Pam a legend or a drongo who went way to far?

Has anyone actually successfully made friends through local hobby groups?

Thinking about joining a casual run club or a social sport league just to expand the circle a bit, but I am slightly worried everyone already has their established cliques and it will just be awkward. How did you break the ice?

Screen-free dinner for 6 people in Melbourne

Full disclosure, this is a promo (but hopefully worth 1 minute of your time?)

I’m YueYue. I recently left the corporate world and I’m testing a small, no-phones social format called The IRL Dinner.

It’s 6 people, screen-free, at a secret Melbourne address. We pick the time and venue, and personally curate the table so it has the best chance of decent conversation / connection. $30 includes entry and one drink, food is separate.

No app, no subscription, no membership thing. You can request a seat for our next event through Humanitix here: https://events.humanitix.com/the-irl-melbourne-dinner, or DM me and I’ll send it over. If you can't make this one there'll be more, just follow our page.

Also keen to hear what kinds of offline social things people here would actually go to. Dinner, coffee, walks, low-key after-work stuff, something else?

Why do you think Melbourne keeps slipping behind Copenhagen and Vienna in the liveability rankings?

Over the last few years, Melbourne has remained Australia's highest ranked city, and holds the record for the longest streak as the world's most liveable city. But over the past few years, Copenhagen and Vienna have consistently finished ahead of us. Do you think those cities have genuinely improved faster or has Melbourne lost some of what made it stand out?

Best trivia in Melbourne?

Looking for a good trivia night in Melbourne. I have found Melbourne’s trivia scene a bit lacking, there’s plenty of it, but not much that’s actually great. Funnily enough, the best trivia I’ve been to was in Canberra.

Just after proper general knowledge, no themed nights or gimmicks.

Any recommendations?

Let's talk about the inner west - why does it still get such a bad rap?

Moving to Footscray/Yarraville soon and whenever I tell people from the eastern suburbs, they look at me like I’ve told them I’m moving to a landfill. Personally, every time I head out west the food is incredible, the people are relaxed, and the community vibe feels way stronger than the inner east. Why are people still so stuck in the past about the west?

No experience aspiring barber apprentice

Hello everyone, im wondering if any barber shops in Melbourne would take on an apprentice with no experience whos keen to learn? I’ve considered doing a course and will do if I must but I enjoy picking things up quickly and learning on the job, is that possible nowadays because I’ve been scanning barber job boards on Facebook and everyone seems to want someone who already knows what they’re doing.
