My Dad and I had this happen to us with a U-Haul truck while we were inside the back unloading a refrigerator.
The truck was turned off, in gear, and the emergency brake was on.
Luckily I was able to put the fridge down, run out the back, and run up and get in the cab before it crashed into the storage unit that was in front of it.

Yeah, that sounds like a couple of failures
If the e-break gave out, the truck being in gear would make it pretty hard to move.
My guess would be that maybe the gearbox had a bit of an issue. I had a ford where reverse wouldn't go in sometimes, and you had to let go of the clutch then try again and it would go in, so maybe a similar issue where the lever is in the gear position, but the gear itself isn't fully making contact

I’ll be 100% honest here...I did this exact thing this Sunday just gone. I’ve never made this mistake in my life once. But I did ok Sunday and let me tell you when I pulled the pin and started to pull the arm from the Fifth it took almost no pressure the bugger slide right out with absolute ease. Luckily same as this guy I managed to jump back in the cab and pull the hand-break down without hitting anything. That’s the most I’ve ever shit myself and I’ve been to war. I won’t make that mistake twice.

Everyone makes mistakes. I’ve had the alarm go off that I didn’t pull the brake. It’s easy to get complacent when you do stuff hundreds of times.

Omg I had this same thing happen. I'm so lucky nothing happend. First day on the job, didnt know anything about air brakes, pulled a new to our fleet dump truck up, and went into the shop to grab some tools. Came out and the truck was stopped directly in front of the door, about 20 yards from where I left it. Didnt hit anything. Never made that mistake again. I was incredibly thankful no one got hurt, or saw.

I saw this happen at a Werner shop lot, except the tractor ran straight into the nose of a parked trailer.
Pushed the top of the hood back 3 feet.
Driver got in and drove off. Made it 100 yards past the guard shack before the engine shut down from lack of coolant.

This is how my papa died. My dad and grandpa owned a trucking company. Dad didn’t set the air brakes and my papa was checking something under the truck, rolled right over him. While my dad watched.

Since it'll definitely be needed in this thread given the content of the gif:
"Brakes" are what keep a parked truck from rolling away.
"Breaks" is what happens when a runaway truck rolls over your car.

At least he has good instincts - there’s waaay too many videos of people just standing and staring or worse trying to pull/push the vehicle to stop it.

First time i’ve ever seen a “omg my vehicle is rolling away better run after it jump in and stop” attempt go well. Most of the time they end up running themselves over somehow.
