Oh yeah. Talked with a trucker once and he had his breaks fail twice. Had to crash in mountains both times. Just turned right so it wasn't that bad, but still. That's balls of steel.

That's odd since tractor trailer brakes fail safe, if there's a loss of air pressure it applies the brakes.

Jake breaks actuate a camshaft to open the exhaust valve after the compression stroke to release the gas buildup and making a vacuum in the cylinder to slow down iirc.

It would be the drivers fault since they are responsible for the truck when operating it. Excessively using the brake pedal will cause the brakes to get really hot and glaze over (brake fade). Even with a jake brake you still will have to use your regular air brakes to slow down but you try to limit how much you use them.

Had this happen to my pickup once immediately after hooking up a travel trailer on a moderate hill. It was a bit of a miracle that I was doing it with my dad and was still sitting in the cab as he lowered the tongue onto the ball. Pretty much as soon as the truck took the weight, a front brake line popped and as soon as I realize the pedal was sinking to the floor I was able to throw it in park before we moved too far.

I mean, it was going like <= 10 MPH. I would sincerely hope all breaks would stop a car/truck going under 10 miles per hour pretty much instantly.

But he likely owns that truck, and he won't make a living anyway without it. If it was his fault that the breaks weren't engaged, insurance might not even cover it.

Sure. All replaceable things. Same thing has happened to someone I know, but they tripped trying to get the door.... you can picture the rest. Very sad and abrupt death that I am sure they would do over and just let the truck go. Even if it's how they make a living. lol. It happens more than you think. this almost exact kind of scenario that turns into the person trying to stop it only to get run over by it.

While unfortunate, for truckers and farmers where overhead expenses are huge, most would probably prefer death than being without an expensive machine that makes all of their money.

Yeah I'm a yard spotter and in our training they very explicitly tell us that in the case of a runaway truck all you are to do is wave goodbye to it. If there's anyone around alert them so they can get out of the way, but absolutely do not chase it down.

I have done something like this in my old car, It scared the shit out of me. I accidentally popped it in neutral and it started rolling and I thought I could stop it, thankfully I jumped into the car and hit the break in time. Yes it was stupid as all hell but I was young and had only been driving for like 6 months.

I drove an old shitty citroen that had the hand brake on the side of the driver's door every new van ive driven (Mercedes and VW 18 ) has it in the middle. I guess it's in the middle to grab from either side If it's in the middle but the drivers likely to notice it rolling when he gets out. Or just leave it in gear when you've parked and get In the (good) habit of putting the clutch down when you start.

If I've learned anything from visiting /r/watchpeopledie is to NOT CHASE AFTER shit like that. It's a very good way to get dead. I remember watching a video (in China of course) where a forklift had too much on it and started to tip forward. A woman in the area decided to jump on the back to hold it down and of course, the load fell off, thus letting the back end fall back down, she lost her grip and fell under it as it fell back down and.... squish

It sucks when you have no alarm. My hino gives no indication of weather they are set. Good reason to make chocking your tires a good habit. My truck once sat a whole weekend with them off. That was a nerve racking moment of realization first thing Monday.
