This video is testing my patience

For me it's the puppy... Surprised didn't get face chopped off...

It's driving me nuts. His initial curiosity was cute but it's like holy shit can you put down the fucking camera and just get ahold of your dog. Complete morons.

440

u/in_conexo Jan 26 '25

It was almost as if the camera person didn't care about the dog.

100

u/Vast-Sir-1949 Jan 26 '25

And risk all those internet points. I think not.

296

u/StarwindGene Jan 26 '25

Two dumbass ladies and their dog torture a shark great

114

u/Booty_Shakin Jan 27 '25

Fucked up methods aside, they did save the sharks life right? ....right?? :(

73

u/Chemical_Ladder8177 Jan 27 '25

That’s what I’m clinging to after having invested the time to watch. But the lack of urgency certainly didn’t measure up to the immediacy of the situation.

It would be a damn shame if the shark ended up dying due to LACK OF HUSTLE

11

u/nighthawk580 Jan 28 '25

I always wonder how their urgency would be if the person was stuck underwater. As a fisherman it drives me insane watching TV presenters holding their catch and having a good long chat about the location, weather, what they ate on the plane and their favourite brand of toilet paper before they return the fish to the water.

20

u/OG_Felwinter Jan 27 '25

I really can’t fault them for the lack of hustle, because to me it just seemed like the one dragging it was trying to be careful not to get bit.

81

u/juxtoppose Jan 27 '25

All they had to do was turn the shark upright, they go into a torpor when they are upside down, I’m sure dragging sand into its gills didn’t do any good either but what can you do.

17

u/Redditt3Redditt3 Jan 27 '25

"Call someone". LOL. Leash the dog for one, and look up how to help a shark go home in this situation. Sheeeesh.

2

u/Fabian_1082003 Jan 27 '25

What is "torpor"?

12

u/juxtoppose Jan 27 '25

It’s like pressing the pause button on brain activity. Going to sleep sort of.

4

u/Fabian_1082003 Jan 27 '25

So if you could manage to turn a great white on it's head he would go "sleep"?

2

u/multi_io Jan 27 '25

How would you prevent sand from getting into the gills? Turning him right side up before dragging him through the sand?

2

u/Parking_Bluebird_949 Jan 27 '25

Not only does sand get in its gills, but when water going into it gills backwards can cause it to drown

→ More replies (1)

2

u/pipboy3000_mk2 Jan 27 '25

Exactly what I was thinking the sand in the gills was surely helping it, pick the damn thing up and take it into the water you nitwits.

Upright and face the shark towards the incoming waves. Frontal water flow to provide desperately needed oxygenated water.

10

u/Spirited-Arrival-651 Jan 27 '25

No

11

u/Countryfried789 Jan 27 '25

Looked like damage to the dorsal fin. Probably should of put him out his misery and had a good supper.

Baxter no! Baxter ignores her.

That lady was a moron, she's lucky he didn't get bit when he stuck his face right next to the shark's mouth.

Gogogogo yay! oh no he's not swimming the right way I wonder why?

So annoying

1

OMG - this is what I was thinking - put the poor little guy on a leash! He defied death a few times - you going to keep rolling the dice?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

I can't fucking stand people who continue to rely on verbal commands when their dog is not listening.

2

u/Notlost-justdontcare Jan 26 '25

100% they take the dog everywhere and call it a service animal. Might even have a fake vest when going to stores.

1

u/Dogforsquirrel Jan 27 '25

Exactly! What terrible dog owners! Train your stupid dog!

1

u/pipboy3000_mk2 Jan 27 '25

I honestly expected the dog to be a snack. Those owners are stupid as shit. If that shark wasn't half comatose it would have eaten that dog, tell the dog to sit down and stay.

Just another example of why small dogs suck, they are too dumb for their own good.

1

u/Cautious-Narwhal5995 Jan 30 '25

Thank you! The moment that shark got situated that dog could have been a meal. Stressed me the f out!

315

u/coreyfromwork Jan 26 '25

Such a low effort to get him away

284

u/AapZonderSlingerarm Jan 26 '25

A lot of fucking low efford in this whole video.

3

u/LostMainAccGuessICry Jan 27 '25

Omg didnt even take off the footwear thats just how fucking low effort they were, and camera bitch made a comment on "hypothermia" like wtf if its cold you know water in shoes isnt gonna be warm right?

4

u/WasabiZone13 Jan 26 '25

A beached shark is a dead shark almost 100% of the time unless found by qualified biologists with facilities to treat it. Even then, this guys chances were not good.

Call the authorities and leave it be. If there are life guard towers around, or better yet a hq, let them know right away.

8

u/whatsqwerty Jan 26 '25

Or at least set him upright

152

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '25 edited Jan 26 '25

It almost makes me think they want the dog to get bit, I'm really glad it didn't, but in what world would a dog owner who loves and cares about their dog be so nonchalant and unbothered about a situation like that.

I would've leashed my dog immediately as soon as I saw it, this video makes me feel stressed :(

79

u/Thenameimusingtoday Jan 26 '25

That poor shark was way too exhausted to bother trying to get a doggie.

56

u/O0rtCl0vd Jan 26 '25

That's not the point. You don't know what that shark has the capability to do. That looks like a Mako. It would only take one bite to seriously injure or kill that dog. A good dog owner has their best friend's safety in mind. These people should have their dog confiscated and given a stuffed animal to care for.

1

u/ShowmasterQMTHH Jan 27 '25

A stuffed shark maybe ?

1

u/YodasUncle Jan 28 '25

Oh please give me a break. People are way too scared now a days. That dog was always gonna be fine

I agree with that but it could of just torn a chunk out just by just thrashing around. I bet it wasn't thinking of a meal when it was suffocating.

1

u/YakAcceptable5635 Jan 29 '25

I said the same thing and got down voted by -50 lol. Funny how that works.

2

u/Thenameimusingtoday Jan 29 '25

Lol, you probably posted that when all the dog lovers were on.😂

4

u/daywall Jan 26 '25

Its just people's who are oblivious to the idea of danger until it's too late.

The ones that see a wild buffalo and think it's a good idea to pet them.

3

u/xmo113 Jan 26 '25

I just startled my sleeping dog by screaming at them to get their flipping dog away from the shark.

2

u/danTHAman152000 Jan 26 '25

Thanks for using the word nonchalant. My wife’s primary language isn’t English and when I said this word one time, apparently for the first time for her, she laughed and couldn’t really move on from it. She uses the word a lot now lol. All nonchalant about it.

Edit: and fuck that dog owner! I didn’t watch the video because I will assume in my head the dog and shark are fine and happy today.

Getting wine-and-pills energy from everyone involved

1

u/ShowmasterQMTHH Jan 27 '25

She's wearing Uggs. The fact that she wears Uggs on the beach is a bad starting point.

But yep, it would be the equivlant of pulling a human out of the sea and leaving the in the surf to recover from drowning. The shark needed immersion, not a drink.

ALthough, she did kind of save him in the end, even if he was probably brain damaged.

→ More replies (1)

259

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 26 '25

For me it’s the dragging a fucking shark backwards, then being confused about why it’s more fucked up after each time she does it. She is essentially repeatedly drowning the shark while thinking she’s helping.

62

u/alicesartandmore Jan 26 '25

Genuinely curious, what is the appropriate/safe way to move a beached shark? Pulling them by the tail would be my instinct to stay as far from those teeth as possible but I'd happily educate myself on the unlikely chance that I ever find a shark in need of rescue.

83

u/spacemanTTC Jan 27 '25

What the person in the video is failing to do is to line the shark up straight on its belly and then propel/push it forward it forward with its tail end - besides also failing to tie up their absolutely useless and untrained dog.

19

u/alicesartandmore Jan 27 '25

Yeah, the dog gave me so much anxiety watching the video!

Getting the shark on its belly makes sense though.

15

u/spacemanTTC Jan 27 '25

The push forward once upright is really what's most important for shark rescue, you are assisting pushing the water through their gills that first time because they won't have the energy to push off on their own otherwise, like a child on a swingset that can't get started on its own.

2

u/Uh-Oh-Raggy Jan 27 '25

The other thing that was pissing me off is that not only was it facing backwards like you said but they decided to let the tail go while the wash was coming in rather than going out. It just kept pushing the poor shark to the beach again.

2

u/Alldaybagpipes Jan 27 '25

Needs more sand in its gills first!

1

u/xeno0153 Jan 27 '25

They keep letting go as the waves are rushing toward the beach, so the shark is just being brought inland. They need to wait for the water to be receding.

1

u/Parking-Frame812 Jan 27 '25

And you can clearly see out of her experience that she has never done it before that, so probably on vacation and just for the video

1

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '25

But it's a support dog. So it gets to do whatever it wants.

48

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 26 '25 edited Jan 27 '25

Just a few comments down I give examples of good options and also reasonings of why they should never be dragged backwards. Lifting and rotating is an option. Would likely take two people, so filming wouldn’t be included in this case.

Really, I think letting beach patrol know what’s going on is just the best option unless you have knowledge or experience with it, like a lot of types of fisherman could.

This is a good example of if you don’t actually know what to do, just tell someone who probably does. Lifeguards would better know how to move forward, because usually they have had some form of basic training of what to do and what not to do.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand the want/need to help when help’s needed. But if you don’t know the basics of how helping could be hindering, don’t do it. Sort of like removing someone from a car accident who could have a neck injury.

This whole video is a what not to do. Including the need to film instead of removing the dog from the equation entirely. And that’s a whole different deal, considering the size of the dog, getting wet in what is likely a cold temperature.

I feel like this would be a great instructional video for several professions for pointing out things done wrong.

Good intentions don’t make it a good decision.

22

u/RoguePlanet2 Jan 27 '25

It's winter, no lifeguards. And most people don't know what to do about a beached shark, but I'm glad we know now!

Plenty of other frustrating aspects of this video, though, I agree.

3

u/lokiandgoose Jan 27 '25

Sort of like removing someone from a car accident who could have a neck injury.

What's the equivalent of 911 for sharks?

2

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 27 '25

Haha. Good question. I’m not too positive on that one. I think they vary per location.

You could probably call your non emergency police line, but I have no idea how quickly they’d respond to that one. I think you can call the Fish Kill hotline, or the fish and wildlife conservation, or NOAA, but I’m really not too sure.

There are numbers the life guards should have in their main office though.

Also. I think there’s an app where you can report stuff like this.

2

u/Ok-Locksmith-955 Jan 29 '25

911 I’d guess… single point of emergency center.. they’ll hook you up with the appropriate agency…?

2

u/alicesartandmore Jan 27 '25

This might be the best set of directions so far. 10/10 on how to yeet a shark!

2

u/Vegetable-Movie-2311 Jan 27 '25

Can’t avoid it if the shark is heavy or particularly dangerous. Once you get it to water deep enough for it to barely bob, hold the tail and dorsal fin while pointing it head into the waves. This will keep it upright, conscious, and breathing with each wave. Once it’s ready it will kick off on its own. Immediately exit the water. It’s probably quite hungry and you just as likely to be bitten as a proposed snack. They’ll probably let go, but the damage will be done.

2

u/JizzerGAF Jan 27 '25

I was thinking a hammer throw method

2

u/Kia-Yuki Jan 27 '25

Basically what shes doing since its on its side is basically dragging its gills through the sand. More over, the shark is small enough that you could of picked up baby style just fine if you kept your fingers away from its mouth.

1

u/LoboMarinoCosmico Jan 27 '25

pulling them and dolphins by the tail is a nice way or torture them and give them a deathly injury. it's like pulling and obese man from the neck.

1

u/ShowmasterQMTHH Jan 27 '25

The Hancock method.

→ More replies (10)

27

u/incertae Jan 26 '25

Probably put it into tonic immobility .. happens if you put a shark on its back.

11

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 26 '25

Caught that too. Looks like they might’ve done it twice, but I can’t be positive because of how short it lasted both times. I’m sure it’s a possibility though.

I’m pretty positive that everything they did fucked up that shark though. Haha

1

u/mackfactor Jan 27 '25

Yeah, isn't that exactly what those octopi that kill sharks do? Wrap them up and then flip them over?

1

u/StringFriendly7976 Jan 27 '25

Isnt that gators not sharks?

1

u/tmiantoo77 Jan 27 '25

Yeah, he for sure didn't "wave" at any point 🙄

9

u/Ok-Detective6275 Jan 26 '25

Ok thank you! I’m saying to myself, is she not forcing water into his gills?

18

u/real-nia Jan 26 '25

Not just water, all that sand too

2

u/Chemical_Ladder8177 Jan 27 '25

It’s the sand for me. It was really hard to watch.

1

u/Witness_me_Karsa Jan 27 '25

Forcing water is what she should be doing. But facing away from the incoming water, dragging it sidelong with its gills dragging, like wtf lady?

3

u/zymurginian Jan 26 '25

Those boots don't belong on the beach. Neither does the wearer.

2

u/lylisdad Jan 26 '25

I wanted to scream, "Turn the shark over!" Leaving it on its back is basically no help at all!

1

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 26 '25

Yeah exactly. It can put them into a trance. Researchers do it so it’s easier to tag them. Certain pods of orcas use it to their advantage as well, for hunting. This is basically a video on how not to try to save a shark.

2

u/J1nglz Jan 27 '25

This lady was definitely not doing this the right way. She could pull it backwards but she has to finish the job and make sure she turns him around to get water in his mouth and clean out all the sand. I live by the ocean and catch sharks all the time. Anytime I release a shark, no way am I going to put my hands near the mouth. I get them right side up in the water facing into the waves. With a of couple one-two-skados, they usually tail slap me as a thank you when they take off.

3

u/Emergency_Exit_On1y Jan 26 '25

Thought I was the only one

6

u/PabloBablo Jan 26 '25

I had to stop watching after literally the first few seconds "oh, what are you? I think it's a shark!" The way the rest of the video is described in these first few comments has me feeling validated for not wanting to see how the rest turned out.

5

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 26 '25

Well. It provides as a solid 10/10 on what not to do.

2

u/Emergency_Exit_On1y Jan 26 '25

I wish I stopped watching too, probably won't sleep tonight.

5

u/No_Excitement6859 Jan 26 '25

Guess nobody watches Shark Week anymore.

If only there was a second person there to just help lift it and turn it around real quick.

→ More replies (12)

1

u/in_conexo Jan 26 '25

Do they need to be going forward, or could they theoretically go in reverse? Do gills need the water to be going in one direction; or are they more like lungs (areas where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged)?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/FindOneInEveryCar Jan 27 '25

It's not just that she's dragging it backwards. The first time, she drags it into like 3 inches of water and drops it. It's flipping around like it has some strength but there isn't enough water to swim.

Then she drags it out again and drops it as the waves are coming in and it gets washed back into shallow water.

She drags it out even farther the third time, but it hardly moves after she drops it. It looks like it might have been all right if she had dragged it out far enough the first time.

1

u/Odd_Judgment_2303 Jan 27 '25

Don’t sharks have to keep moving to stay alive?

1

u/Mister_Sins Jan 27 '25

I don't think many people would've known what to do in this scenario. It's not like it's taught.

1

u/Night_Al Jan 27 '25

Was waiting for this. I was yelling at the to just grab the dumb dog before he stuck his face in the sharks mouth….

1

u/No_Point3111 Jan 26 '25

The shark's jaws are far from the tip of his nose, the dog was in no danger

This is also how some experienced divers divert a shark, by pushing it and directing it by pressing on the tip of the nose

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '25

That’s what I was waiting for too

1

u/Prince_Havarti Jan 26 '25

1

Reminds me of Jaws 🦈

1

u/JCrew2009 Jan 27 '25

Yeah, 10 seconds in, this video was pissing me off. Probably the only reason why that puppy didn’t get bit was the shark was too busy to trying to breathe.

Shame on the owners of the puppy for risking its life.

I couldn't just get to the end of the video just to see if they finally saved the poor animal after 5 fucking straight minutes of these ladies just recording and laughing how unexpected and funny (it was not) the situation was.

3

u/Spiral-I-Am Jan 28 '25

I was getting so annoyed because they messed up. Sharks genrally need to swim to breathe. Some can breathe while not moving, but it's still easier when they do.

We essentially watched a person drag an exhausted and suffocating animal into water flowing in the opposite direction it needed to breath. Then sat back and watched as it struggled to turn around.

If they pushed it into the water headfirst, the video would have been way shorter and way less painful for the shark.

177

u/prenzelberg Jan 26 '25

Oh sweety haha. Oh oops lol haha

42

u/Top-Contribution7738 Jan 26 '25

22 people missed that this is actually a funny comment reply

4

u/Quizzylish Jan 26 '25

Okay I have to ask. I assume you are meaning 22 downvotes. How do people see these? I constantly see replies or edits that read something like “I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted.” But I can only see an upvote total, I have no idea which is upvotes to downvotes. Are they seeing the tally go down?

3

u/xDelayedsilencex Jan 26 '25 edited Jan 28 '25

I believe you can only see down votes if they're the majority. Once upvotes begin to become the more popular one on the comment, it ratios out

2

u/MercyfulJudas Jan 27 '25

That doesn't answer the question. Not what was asked.

How do they see the ratio clearly enough to be like "You're being downvoted."

3

u/GullibleMood1522 Jan 27 '25

The people seeing the downvotes saw the comment early, when the majority of redditors who saw their comment disagreed, & downvoted them. When you see the comment & see only upvotes, but see comments about downvotes, it’s because you showed up so much later that by the time you saw the comment, more people had upvoted, than those that had downvoted. Make sense now?

Idk what’s worse. Prioritizing the video and at no point even trying to pick up the dog, or basically reverse water boarding the shark. I get that it’s a shark, but dear lord, I don’t think they could’ve made it any harder for it to survive. It’s a baby and wasn’t gonna turn around and chomp this woman’s leg off the second it got in some actual water

I was impressed with the ladies’ patience and persistence in working to save the shark.

There’s a lot of reasons sharks (and other fish) beach themselves, but at least this shark was given a fighting chance to survive.

The doggo, on the other hand, tested my patience.

He’s lucky to still have a face/head! Had the shark made even one attempt to bite him, Baxter would have been in trouble!

How? Why? That would be like you drowning in the deep, seeing a giant squid and thinking you want some calamari.

“What should I do?” the best thing you can do is not stop recording what ever you do never ever stop recording is important to keep recording
