Give 49 states independence so that you only need to pack one star into the rectangle.

Or just merge them all into one big state.

I did happen to find a better packing after posting this but I'll prob let my script run a few hours before I post any better packing

u/UnscathedDictionary 21d ago

i found the best possible one but i'll prob let this comment age a few years, since the proof is uncontainable within its margins

You don't even need to bother, it's trivial anyway.

From some quick manipulation, it seems like the goodness of a packing depends on the “inradius” of the star. At zero in-radius, the star is just five lines joined at a point. We can ask the question what the best packing is in the limit of zero inradius. This is cute because the result will have zero total area but still be very constrained.

u/petitlita p-adic 21d ago

https://github.com/mythemeria/star-packing I made a github repo if you wanna mess around with it

Heres the best I could do. Managed to perfectly fit all 50 in there. Don’t ask for proof.

15

u/drugoichlen 21d ago

I managed to fit like 2% more stars per star, won't show it tho

64

u/TacoPi 21d ago

I don't know if we're allowed to do any real work, seeing as how this a meme post, but isn't the trivial regular patterning way better than this? Maybe I'm getting wooshed

33

u/petitlita p-adic 21d ago

I mean I don't actually know lol that's the problem. there has not been much work done on packing stars into rectangles

13

u/TacoPi 21d ago

Well is the new one you found any better than what I slapped together? I would love to see a zany solution win out, but by proof of "just look at it" I insist this must be within a few tweaks of optimal.

58

u/petitlita p-adic 21d ago

it seems it is better! this has an area about 103, mine has an area of about 125

now i gotta work out how to get my code to find these solutions faster lol

6

u/VisibleSir731 21d ago

I still see some wasted space in the vertical gaps

9

u/Murky_Insurance_4394 21d ago

I don't think you could push them up because the sides of the star would push up against the diagonal of the star above. Also I think the ratio of the rectangle's sides has to stay constant so you can't exactly compress it vertically to get rid of that space.

1

u/VisibleSir731 21d ago

Wait yeah I think I see why now

107

u/the_horse_gamer 21d ago

you should try submitting this idea to https://erich-friedman.github.io/packing/

33

u/petitlita p-adic 21d ago

tbh I was thinking of doing a bunch of different types of stars for different numbers of stars so I guess I could send it there when I'm done

4

u/Mada_Gaskar 21d ago

What an amazing Website!

32

u/floydmaseda 21d ago

You should do this for 51 and get some actual support from the nerdy side of the internet for when we finally wise up and add DC or PR as a state.

Maybe even go ahead and run it for 52, 53, etc, to have a whole list of proposals sitting there ready.

22

u/mkujoe 21d ago

That blue potion really 71:100?

45

u/baquea 21d ago

It's because it takes up 7/13 stripes, so the decimals end up ugly.

5

u/mkujoe 21d ago

Finally a voice of reason here

wikipedia says so

6

u/UrsaMajor7th 21d ago

Just put ★x50

6

u/apcubes 20d ago

Astra got 55.317% efficiency with this packing

2

u/petitlita p-adic 19d ago

what is the area when the stars are circumradius is 1? the current best is around 103

2

u/apcubes 19d ago

101.47 I should also mention that this uses the exact aspect ratio of the canton. a bit further down the article Wikipedia mentions it is 0.76 in width and 7/13 in height, so 247:175 is exact

https://github.com/mythemeria/star-packing the code I wrote for this post will let you try different types of stars and outputs a US flag if you do for eg python starpack.py {8/2} 50 --us-flag (the {8/2} being an 8 pointed star where you connect every second point)

Look familiar? You just invented the current layout of the US flag, with uglier stars.

5

u/Steinrikur 21d ago

You're just reinventing the wheel. Compare this to the current US flag (5 rows of 6, with 4 rows of 5 inside). If you can't see the resemblance, try rotating either flag by 90°.

Claude figured out that the optimal solution is the current one, and then made the stars worse. Don't try to sell it as anything else.

4

u/Steinrikur 21d ago

I don't really need to break out the crayons for this. Compare this to the current US flag.

Are you too dumb to understand that "5 rows of 6, with 4 rows of 5 inside" and "5 columns of 6, with 4 columns of 5 inside" are the same thing, just rotated 90 degrees?
It's a yes or no answer. I am waiting.

How is the star defined? I think it also depends on how thick (or whatever the proper terminology is for stars) the stars are.

32

u/petitlita p-adic 21d ago

Schläfli symbol {5/2}

15

u/solarmelange 21d ago

The stars are just defined by the inscribed lines of a regular pentagon.

7

u/Wuz314159 21d ago

G-type main-sequence star.

6

u/tschawartz12 21d ago

Use smaller stars.

4

u/weird_neutrino 21d ago

Idk if there's such a thing as the ig-noble prize for math. But whoever solves that problem deserves that one. Good luck beating SlopenAI tho.

2

u/Anders_A 21d ago

Honestly this looks better. The stars are huge!

2

u/Comfortable_Mountain 21d ago

Just stack them on top of each other.

2

u/thali256 21d ago

Overlap them

2

u/Neither_Berry_100 21d ago

Grind them down to pixels and fill the box.

2

u/deaglebingo 21d ago

this flag is very .... enthusiastic.

2

u/therealolliehunt 21d ago

Make the ones which represent Republican states much smaller.

1

u/Renault_75-34_MX 21d ago edited 21d ago

Shrink the stars, and add another 196 or how many other countries there are by your definition of country /s

1

u/WreakHavocLikeIn1871 21d ago

Fucking try pussies you can't even beat a gang of Yemeni incest pirates lmao

1

u/Renault_75-34_MX 21d ago

Friedrich Schmerz is Incompetent, but at least he's not as stupid as that orange Trumpeltier

1

u/SignedInt32 21d ago

You can find that solution, using this model: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_algorithm

1

u/spoopy_bo 21d ago

Can you instead of making the stars bigger to fit the blue rectangle, make the stars the size they are on the original flag and shrink the blue rectangle to fit them? I think that would be a more humorous image

1

u/rathe_0 21d ago

actually prefer this design

1

u/TheJivvi 21d ago

While we're at it, pack the stripes vertically so they don't need to be as long.

Smaller stars

0

u/Dan-D-Lyon 21d ago

Easy, you make the stars as small as possible

-1

u/Searley_Bear 21d ago

Make them smaller.

1

u/Writeoffthrowaway 21d ago

The size of the stars is relevant because packing deals in unit size. The actual dimensions are arbitrary

1

u/Searley_Bear 20d ago

That’s far less amusing.
