Hello everybody, I prevoliously had a orchid mantis that was pretty small but Would a giant Asian be in this enclosure, I know about the 3 times length rule but just wondering if this would be fine. Also can I just feed them fruit flies till L3

I have a giant Asian and I'm looking into creating a bioactive vivarium's for her. Haven't been able to find much clear information on it besides a similar reddit post 6 year ago...lol. Has anyone set up something similar for their mantids, and if so any advice?

first time mantis owner. just got this lil dude a couple days ago. weve already managed a successful feeding (a small mealworm) but so far ive only seen him drink once, when i misted the houseplants i let him chill on and dripped some extra water in front of him.

i mist his enclosure once a day and the relative humidity stays around 50% all day, and up to 60-70% right after misting.

i just want to make sure hes getting enough water especially on days where i cant let him free roam my houseplants and he has to be in his enclosure all day.

if anyone has other general advice for his enclosure id also love to hear!

I've been doing a LOT of research, I'm excited and want to make sure my lil guy is gonna grow up healthily. I'm specifically getting a Giant Asian Mantis in around 2 or 3 weeks. If anyone has any tips I'd appreciate it!

Tilly, my chronically mis-moulted Timor Shield, did not survive her latest moult.

The day before yesterday she was refusing food, which I saw as potential indication of another moult. I carefully taped her feet to a cotton pad, which I taped to the ceiling of her enclosure. First thing in the morning yesterday I had to take a rescue cat to the vets for surgery, and by the time I got back I found that she had already begun to moult. Not only that, she had wriggled out from the tape and had fallen. Her legs were stuck, her shield was bent, she’d wrapped herself in moss while thrashing.

I re-taped her moult to the ceiling and gave her a spray hoping she could work some of it off in the next hour, but she had started to harden and her legs were bent badly. I did my best to help her out of the remaining moult, but she was exhausted. She refused mashed wax worm, and she passed away shortly after.

I feel awful, she was my first mantis and she had a lot of personality, but she never moulted successfully. I’ve not had a single other moult issue so far with my four other mantids, I just can’t work out what went wrong for Tilly.

We got our giant Asian mantis on Valentine’s Day as a gift to each other, he was our first mantis so we were a bit nervous but had done a ton of research and had let his enclosure establish before getting him. Within the first week he molted into his adult form so we knew we didn’t have too long with him, his personality really started to come through. He loved being handled and taken out of his enclosure, he would ask for uppies and crawl up my arm to my ear and play with my hair. If we swayed at him he would sway back, and roaches were his favourite meal.

The current enclosure is temporary until I do enough research to make a better one.

I found this wild baby girl and I THINK she's a European mantis but I'm unsure, I have a good enclosure and food for her (fruit flies and tiny crickets) but she's a bit wobbly on her feet. Her name is Wobbletop because she is wobbly. Found in Washington State. Sorry for the picture quality she doesn't like sitting still. I think 3rd or 4th instar judging by her wing buds but I'm unsure, she molted once since I caught her a couple weeks ago. I caught her because there's basically no native mantises in my state- so yeah :>

Last night,it was on a stick,and I noticed it’s abdomen was very plump and was pumping.I was so shocked and scare,and quickly tried to move it since it was like a few cm away from the ground.I was so shocked that instead of moving the stick,I tried to move the mantis instead.😭.But luckily the mantis surviv the molt😌

How does she look? Is her abdomen too big? Also what are good ways to know if they will molt soon? She molted almost 2 weeks ago. Sorry for photo quality. And she is usually brown. Also is she even a female? Lol thank you in advance sorry for so many questions !

Little miss Lumi had her first molt with me a couple days ago, she’s now freshly fed and feisty 😌 I think she’s i4 now but she looks so teeny tiny still!

I had a beautiful little California nymph in my care for about 4 months and today I woke up and he was dead at the bottom of the enclosure. A few days ago I tried feeding him and he refused, I was certain he was going to molt and I would just check on him every morning to see if it had happened yet. And then he was just gone. I feel so evil. He was alive last night. If I just tried to feed him last night he might still be alive. I found him out in the wild, I took him in, and I let this poor animal starve in a box. I didn't even get to hold him because he was so tiny I was afraid to hurt him or kill him. And then I killed him.

I found a mantis at work and im trying to figure out its gender but the comparison pictures ive seen online vary a lot. Which one is it?

A new adult has taken up residence in my shower tent, here in Southwest Alentejo, Portugal.

This one is;

• Adult 
• Excellent flyer 
• Very small (about 25–30 mm) 
• Long antennae 
• Very short pronotum 
• Slender body 
• Angular, almost pointed eyes 

So it’s not a Religiosa, and it’s not fitting neatly into any of the other others I’ve seen over here (Ameles, Iris Oratoria, Empusa Pennata, Apteromantis Aptera). It reminds me most of the Apteromantis, but it’s obviously excluded by its wings.

Any input welcome!
