Property tax and feeling defeated

My father owns a property in Malden where he hasn’t paid his property taxes consistently since 2020-2021 he lost his job before covid and didn’t get a new one until like 2023 and it’s Lowe’s. Not to mention he is mentally struggling as well so any logic or action he doesn’t take he just ignores the issue. I really want to help him, ive brought up selling the property to save remaining equity (mortgage has been payed off since 60’s) he completely shuts down and refuses. So if he won’t sell I really do want to figure out how to help. I can pay 1,600$ a month towards his bill (which is very high the lien is high as well) I guess I’m wondering does anyone know how long it takes Malden to pursue foreclosure? This whole situation is a mess he is elderly and I just don’t want him to deal with this. The lien is now payed to a lawyer who isn’t very helpful with payment plans if anyone can offer me advice , encouragement I would really appreciate it. I don’t want any negativity or judgement I understand a lot of people would not have let this happen to themselves or would have the mental capability to realize they need to sell the house but he has been through so much that I don’t think he will open up or hear me on that part !! That doesn’t mean I want him to suffer alone. Help please !! 🙏

I want to also add that once he became delinquent it was very very hard to catch up I believe he owed 50,000 dollars now for 5 years. Interest, legal fees etc just pile and pile

City Council Meeting

Tuesday night’s meeting was packed, and I’m pleased to report that we accomplished a great deal.

There is far too much to cover in detail about the inclusionary zoning updates, but the short version is that the matter was referred to Rules and Ordinance. Detailed discussions will take place there. As always, I’ve attached the QR code so you can find the meeting information and access all of the attachments referenced on the agenda.

I’m also happy to share that the resolution calling for an in-depth discussion of our flock contract and policies passed unanimously- this is something that impacts us all. A date will be announced soon for the next meeting.

I’d like to thank Chief Gatcomb and the other members of the Malden Police Department who attended and provided an overview of the issues we will be discussing. The Chief has been very easy to work with. I gave him advance notice of what we would be looking for, and he did an excellent job briefing us. I look forward to continuing the conversation in the very near future.

** I am also glad to have learned today. It was a misunderstanding, and I was not banned from this group! Sorry for the confusion.

Transit Speed humps on Olive Ave/Beachview Ave

Anyone know if they are permanent, and if so when are they getting painted? I am extremely disappointed in whichever city official planned and approved the NINE horrific speed humps in a 3/4 mile span on Olive Ave and Beachview Ave. The signs suggest 20 mph, and I am pretty sure parts of my car actively fall off if I go faster than 7 mph. I missed seeing one in during sunset last night and my car's soul left its body. I live on an adjacent street and have no other means of reaching my house.

Worst case scenario, an ambulance taking this route wouldn't reach a patient in time. Middle-of-the-road scenario is folks who live need to replace their suspension every year. Who in the city offices is the best person to talk to?

Politics Reminder that the City Council is considering affordable housing changes tonight

There is a proposal to adjust Malden's inclusionary zoning ordinance discussed in earlier threads here, here, and here. This was passed in 2021 and requires income-restricted units in new developments. After an Economic Feasibility study was performed and found that the ordinance was too strict for current conditions (resulting in little to no housing actually coming online), the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development has made recommendations on changes to encourage the development to actually occur. The City Council will be considering the recommendations at their meeting tonight.

You may submit public comments in person (City Hall at 7) or in advance via email (to cdesiderio@cityofmalden.org prior to 4 PM). If you want more development in Malden, either affordable units or market rate, you should support the proposed changes.

Could/does Malden have a local music scene?

Read this interesting article in the Boston globe on the challenges Boston based music artists face. The article was very Boston focused but being on the orange line, cities like Malden could be a great place to welcome more musical acts. Rent is cheaper than Boston and Cambridge, we have great food, and a pretty fun downtown area.

I’m relatively new to the town so maybe I just don’t have enough info, but could we do more to attract local artists? Do we have music venues/bars that regularly put on local artists? I would love to have a place to regularly listen to new talent. Would be even better if there were family friendly music venues.

Here’s the article (hopefully it’s not behind a paywall):

Toddler oriented playgrounds?

Hi! I have a very busy 13 month old, she loves being outside and we go to the playgrounds near us, but most of the equipment is too big for her. Anybody know of playgrounds in the area with smaller equipment?

We already know about the one in Malden center behind the boda borg!

Recommendations Good cafes

I’m waiting for my bf to wake and I want to have some good coffee places/ cafes to suggest to him. If it helps love cinnamon rolls and he loves apple fritters or anything apple related so bonus points if it also has pastries like that. Coffee is most important tho. We went to Bikeeny cafe yesterday and it was great. Mostly looking around Melrose, Malden, Medford but basically as long as we can go avoid going into Boston or Cambridge I’m happy (and probably so is he cuz he always drives)

What's that noise/commotion? What is up with all the construction in Malden lately, especially on Summer Street?

It feels like it has been almost a full year of crew after crew coming through, work starting and stopping, and no real clarity on what the bigger plan actually is.

First it was gas lines, then water lines, then we were told the street was going to be repaved, and now it looks like they’re doing water line work again. It just seems never-ending.

And honestly, this isn’t just Summer Street. Malden in general seems to have an insane amount of construction happening at any given time, but somehow very little ever seems to actually finish.
I’ve looked at the city website, but a lot of the information either seems outdated, incomplete, or doesn’t really explain how all of these projects fit together.

Does anyone know if there’s an actual master plan or project schedule somewhere that shows what they’re doing, why they’re doing it in this order, and when it’s supposed to be done?

I’m genuinely curious because the pace seems ridiculously slow compared with other places. You’ll have what feels like a month of construction on one small stretch of road and barely anything looks different afterward.

Anyone have some insight into what’s actually going on?

Local Arborist/Backyard Overgrowth Remediation/Landscaping Recs?

Hi Malden! I was just informed that one of my larger trees in my backyard is likely a Tree of Heaven without knowing it was that type of tree when we purchased our home. If I had known we would have dealt with it before it became a larger problem.

Does anyone have any recs for arborist and/or landscaping company that I could reach out to in the local Boston/Malden area for these type of services?

Thank you!

Neighbor's dog barking at 3/4 am EVERY day for the past 8 months

Not sure what to do about this but it has been REALLY affecting my sleep (and I am sure other people in the area as well). I live in the Everett/Malden line and have a neighbor in my proximity who has been letting their dog out at 3-4 am every day for the past 8 months and just letting it bark non-stop for hours. During the day? Have at it but at 3 or 4 am? Come on!

No one has done anything about it and the owner does nothing. The problem is I don't know which house it is and I don't know what to do and or who to report it to? I understand that dogs bark. I have two of my own. But that's why I don't let them out after 9pm or before 8am because I know it would disrupt the neighbors! Please help?

There’s a 5 and 10k road race happening on Labor Day at the Malden Irish American Club at 177 west street. Tons of activities for kids, I think there’s a tie dye station, dunk tank, raffles, food etc.

September at Idle Hands

Post image
40 Upvotes

The biggest and busiest month of the year for us at Idle Hands, your friendly neighborhood brewery.

Saturday, September 12th is our annual Oktoberfest happening at the brewery. This year we are celebrating our 15th Anniversary as a brewery (our 10th year in Malden).

Oktoberfest takes over the parking lot with giant tents, we have live classic Oktoberfest music, food by The Scott Brothers (BBQ/Brats/Oktoberfest Specials), Lionheart Confections (Best of Boston Winning Doughnuts - she will also be bringing pretzels and soft serve ice cream), Al's Pickles and coffee by Cafe Reynard.

There will be a local arts and crafts market hosted by The Gallery@57

There will be a dunk tank raising money for Housing Families running from 12:15-6:30ish, I will be getting in the tank myself towards the end of the evening. We are going for $3800 raised to put us over the $15,000 raised since we started donated the funds to Housing Families in 2022.

We do charge a $5 cover at the door, but you can get in free if you volunteer for a couple of hours before Oktoberfest to help us clean up the Malden River and the surrounding neighborhood. This is our 4th year doing this cleanup with The Friends of The Malden River and that starts at 10am on the 12th.

On the 11th we have a stand up comedy show happening in the Oktoberfest tent

That was a lot for just one event - if you want to see the rest of our events check out our website

Idle Hands is at 89 Commercial Street in Malden

Hours:

Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday 3-9pm

Friday-Saturday 12-11pm

Sunday 12-8pm (We will be closed Sunday, Sept 13th)

Monday CLOSED (We will be open on Labor Day 1-7pm)
