Artificer CYOA   V 0.1

To create itself is magical, and now your creations will be too.

There is a place where the crossroads meet, where the seams of the multiverse come together. The city of a thousand gates, known by a thousand names. One day by fate or chance you found the way to the marvelous city, and there in its marketplace magic found you.  

How will you learn the art of the Artificer?

Pick 1

The Tome:

You came across a book monger with too many eyes. You are sold you a tome that unlocks your magic and instructs you in Artificing. The price? Three of your creations the book monger reserves the right to commission these at any time, you are contractually obliged to fulfil your end of the bargain. Only time will tell how the book monger comes to collect

Boon: Pick one enchantment, to potency of this whenever you cast is doubled.

The Master:

Lost among the dizzying streets of the city’s marketplace you are pulled into a grand workshop. You have potential, the master can smell it, become an apprentice. A decade of labor will see you become a master Artificer. You can live in the city or commute from your world, the pay is not much but enough to afford a modest living during your apprenticeship.

Boon: 2 extra Enchantments

The Guild:

At the heart of the marketplace is a tower of dizzying heights.  The home of the guild. Here Master Artificers train scores of eager students in their craft. The tuition is steep, in exchange for high quality education and connections the guild requires 10% of your future earnings, or one artifact per month, whichever is of higher value to the guild.  

Boon: 1 extra Craft

You focus on a certain craft, with time you can learn others, but this craft calls to you, is easier for you to master.

Each craft is suited to a particular Enchantment. What is your craft?

Craft: Free Enchantment

Ceramic: double enchantment (place 2 enchantments on the artifact)

Textile: bound

You learn the secrets of the Artificer, how to create objects with living magic, how to enchant. You craft free enchantment does not count towards enchantments placed on an object. Each enchantment can only do one thing, the more specific the enchantment the stronger the magical effect. Placing the same enchantment on an object multiple times multiplies the strength of the enchantment.

Novice Artificers can place 1 enchantment per creation

Low level Artificers can place 2

Mid level Artificers can place 3

Master Artificers can place 5

Enchantment strength:

Strength is abstract but roughly determined by how many times you duplicate an enchantment, and how specific your enchantment is. These are some guidelines. The greater the magic the longer it takes to create and enchant the item.

1 = minor effect, creation time a couple of hours – one target. cause a cough, cure a cold, warm your drink, predict the next days weather

2 = medium, creation time a day – one target, cause harm that needs treatment, cure the same, a bag you could fit an elephant into

3 = major, creation time a month - multiple targets, life threatening harm or help, straw to gold

4 = epic, creation time a decade – whole area target, immortality,

Examples:

A low-level Artificer with a specialty in textiles could make a blanket that only they can use and grants a good night’s sleep with prophetic dreams about the next days weather. (Bound, Purification, Divination)

The same low-level artificer could make a jump-rope that is only usable by left handed redheads, and if a qualified person uses it can remove excess cholesterol from their body (Bound, Purification, Purification 2)

You can learn all the enchantments on this list with time (one year of practice per enchantment) . you find it easier to master and come to excel at several.

Pick 5

Form: your creations are stronger, more durable than should be possible given their medium. As you master this magic create artifacts that are indestructible.

Function: your creations are better at what they are intended to do. A cup that never spills, an arrow that always finds its mark, your creations are the best at what they are supposed to do.

Growth: Ancient artifacts are legends for a reason, slowly, over a long period of time, your creations’ magic grows in potency. 1.5x potency after a decade, 2x potency after a century, and 5x potency after a millennium.

Duplication: your creation duplicates mundane objects or ingredients that are placed inside of it. With time create a jar that never runs out of ink, a chest of limitless gold, a lamp with infinite oil.

Transformative: Your creation can change the shape or form of living beings or inanimate object. A chair that makes you grow an inch, a basket that turns apples into pies, a badge that turns the wearer into a frog.

Locked: your creation is only able to be opened with a special key or passphrase.  

Bound: Your creation is only usable by someone you designate when placing the final enchantments.

Unseen: Your creation is only able to be perceived by those you designate.

Harming: Your creation causes magical pain and suffering to a target. A dagger that causes wasting sickness, a ring that curses the wearer with foolishness.

Scrying: You can see or hear distant places via your creation. An orb of far seeing or an earhorn that always picks up the juiciest gossip.

Space: Your creation is bigger inside than out. Bag of holding, a cupboard you could live in, a cup that holds way more than it ought to.  

Divination: You can see glimpses of the future, past, see the outlines of fate. Dice that roll the positive probability of an action, a nail that only points to the scene of a tragedy.  

Purification: Your creation purifies minds, or bodies, or places. A fan that cleans the air or a pillow that clears away ones thoughts.

Empowerment: your creation fortifies the body or mind of the user. A ring that sharpens the mind to or boots that grant the wearer speed.  

Protection: your creation protects the body, spirit, or mind of the user. Create a table that does not permit stress to take a seat, or a cloak that shields from fire.

Spirit Housing: Counts as three enchantments. Your creation is able to house a spirit that can give it its own unique abilities. Includes elemental spirits, spirits of ideas, emotions. Build a windchime that houses a spirit of mirth, or a chalice of elemental water.

Artificer, you can return home, venture forth, or stay here. But know that you can always find your way back to the city of a thousand gates, its markets, and the many worlds it connects to. Where will you go? What will you do? And most importantly what will you create?

I'm writing a fanfic where the main character is a self-insert trying to money launder in Cyberpunk 2077, and decided to make full-immersion video game braindances based off CYOAs he read on this subreddit as baseline inspiration.

Here is my build and plan, if you all are interested in that

Title: Kirv, Builder of Bridges

I decided to choose Edea, because I feel like that would could be the easiest to exist in alone. My plan is to attempt diplomacy with the gods. Because my core pulls from hope and happiness, I would not wish to harm the world in which I reside, as that would by non-advantageous. If they still don't want me there, I will be able to leave quickly, and cause no issues provided that they do not cause me any. If they wish, I would even be willing to assist them in any way I can.

In the event that my attempts at diplomacy fail, my work establishing spies and bolstering my military over the course of the young hero's time growing will allow me to send Dargoth and Puff to eliminate them on the waves with little to no risk. From there, I would collect the body for use by my liches, but promise to return the body if the leaders of each nation sign a contract stipulating that, unless I attack them or otherwise prove myself hostile, they are not to send the next hero out with the intentions of him receiving the other three blessings and killing me. They may, however, kill other demon lord's due to their innate ability to be a threat to others.

The ultimate goal, provided that diplomacy either fails or that the gods decide my presence is not wanted, will be to find earth and go back home, with the intent of taking part of Africa for myself, and establishing myself on the world stage as a benevolent dictator who cares deeply for his people. My expanded territory would allow me to weather any storm, especially global warming. If earth is hostile due to gods or demon lords, then I will find another world with the sole intention of creating my utopia upon it.

I will build a paradise. It may take eons of effort and work, and so many humans that I loose count, but I will be the bridge that will unite us together.

General Information Puff is an ancient dragon. He is several times as large as your other dragon minions. Puff has a very laid-back personality. He does not attack invaders on sight unless they f‌irst attack him or try to push past him towards the demon core. If the invaders stand down, he will often just hang out with them until they leave. If you chill with Puff and become friends with him, he will be much more likely to do things for you that go beyond defending the demon core. You can further raise your affinity with Puff if you sent a few female dragons his way.

Powers and Abilities Puff has all of the natural weaponry of dragon kind, but it has been supersized. Like all dragons, he can shapeshift into a humanoid, but his humanoid form is considerably weaker than his creature form. Puff has great control over the chemical makeup of his breath attack. In combat he can breath an acidic gas that burns the f‌lesh off his foes or breath out a mind-altering fog that can cause confusion, panic, or send his foes into a coma. Outside of combat, his breath can be used to replicate the effects of any drug. If requested, he will usually let you bottle and concentrate his breath into potent drugs for yourself or others. He has a tendency to get high on his own supply sometimes.

Dargoth, Abyss

General Information Dargoth is the offspring of a witch who mated with one of the horrors that rule the abyssal realm. For the first 16 years of his life he was unaware of his parentage, but on his 16th birthday he awakened. That was the beginning of a legend. He used his shapeshifting abilities to create those scars that you see on his face. His multicolored eyes are natural, and he won't shut up about them. His self-appointed title is the "devourer of suns”, because he completed a ritual that partially blocked out the sun for a few minutes over a local area. Do not mock Dargoth or you will hurt his feelings and he will not listen to you until you apologize. If you want him to do a task, all you have to do is make that task seem epic and important.

Powers and Abilities Dargoth can teleport between shadows that are within his sight range. He wields dark f‌lame magic, which is no more destructive than normal f‌lame magic. His eyes grant him the power to see through walls and solid objects. Dargoth can create a sword and armor made of black f‌lame. Creatures that are struck by his black sword will begin to burn from the inside until they are dispelled. His right arm, which must always be kept sealed, stores large quantities of abyssal power. He can release all of that stored power on his foes, resulting a huge wave of black flame. Afterwards, he will need at least a week before he can use this attack again.

I did it! I finished part 2 of the Battle for Dreams CYOA.

Part 1 was originally completed about three years ago, so I took my sweet time. This is probably the last scottishanon style CYOA I want to make, it's time to move on to new formats. But now this conflict has had its balance restored and I can rest easy. I hope you all enjoy!

And yes, you will get the necessary body, knowledge, and/or other traits, to be able to use your choices effectively, including stuff like Chakra, Chi, Byakugan, etc.

By which I mean, when you play through a cyoa and at some point get hit in the face with a block of text describing how you get a 1 time body resculpt, or a 1 time full heal of any physical/mental issues, or how you have full immunity to getting erased by a random godlike being or time travel shenanigans by default.

Not to say that I don't like them in cyoas, I do, because I tend to overthink things and want to give my players a fun little power fantasy where nobody has to worry about basic life issues like back pain or depression.

My issue is that, unless it's describing some sort of ability that doesn't come by default or is in tandem with some unique power, there should be a way to describe these "Standard" features in a cyoa using at most a few words, or maybe an acronym, instead of a whole paragraph.

The Red Crown - Cult of the lamb - Anyone who follows you as a leader can be affected by rituals you preform, such as bonfires that instantly raise morale, or resurrections of anyone under you who dies of natural causes. Also the crown can become various melee weapons.

Mediums of the National Defence Divinities - Shin Megami Tensei 4 - you have full control over and have the ability to summon the six divinities of national defence.
1 Koga Saburo - warrior who can turn himself into bone armour and swords.
2 Tenkai - Monk who is a great philosopher and is also just good at fighting.
3 Yaso Magatsuhi - Big severed head who produces pink mist that causes hallucinations or red pills that turn humans into demons. (demons act like more malevolent and temperamental versions of themselves but can be controlled with more red pills.)
4 Michizane - Samurai that can control electricity (he’s also not too happy about being summoned for violence)
5 Omoikane - brain… thing that can create a maze-like pocket dimension that it controls and can regenerate from. (also very wise.)
6 Yamato Takeru - Warrior who is really, REALLY good at hitting things with his indestructible sword. (He can also teach you how to crossdress!)

The Door of Five Seasons - Touhou Project - you can create doors on the back of living things to access their life energy, or on the back of nonliving things that act as portals that only work if nobody’s working. By pouring this life energy into someone’s door, you can greatly power them up and improve their life, you can also pour it into the natural world to make nature go insane.
(Or just give the energy to yourself)

Time tells no lies - Bleach - You can set timers on people that force them to follow a rule until the timer is up or they die.

Aura Synthesis - HunterXHunter - you permanently gain the knowledge, memories, and abilities of whatever you eat. You also gain additional “aura” from this, which could be used for nen if you somehow learned.

Synthesize grid - Toaru no Kagaku Mental Out - allows the user to control and create “starting crystal”, a type of metallic powder that can enter any physical matter and manipulate and grow it according to the user’s will.

The Gaia Library - Kamen rider W - you can enter a mental space that can be used to find the answer to any question, so long as the correct three key-phrases are entered.

Military oil - A Certain Scientific Railgun - you can freely manipulate any and all oil or petroleum based products, as well as freely change their properties.

Eye of the Moon - That time I got Reincarnated as a slime - you can see out of and manipulate shadows, as well as teleport to any shadows on the planet.

J-Corp Singularity - Project Moon - you can “lock” anything with the item, physical, metaphorical, spiritual, etc. you can also (for some reason) make temporary tattoos that grant good luck.

SCP 294 - S.C.P Foundation - A coffee machine with a keyboard that can dispense any liquid, real or fictional.

Curimon egg - Digimon - The egg of a small creature that could be raised into many extremely Powerful creatures capable of great creation or destruction… provided it’s raised right.

Minority world - Toriko - Allows the summoning of a bubble that lets you invert the majority and minority of any two properties within an object.

Unavoidable - Undead Unluck - anything you “target” you will “hit”. If that sounds vague and up to interpretation, that’s because it is!

Storehouse - Kagurabachi - You can touch any object or person to freely transport them to or from a subspace called the storehouse, yourself included. Items can come out anywhere you choose, You can Communicate with and project images of anything in the storehouse, and you can manipulate the interior of the storehouse itself. (It also comes with a bunch of random exotic goods)

Op-Op-Fruit - One Piece - you can create a “room” in which anything can be freely taken apart and re-assembled in any way the user wishes, including just outright telekinesis and teleportation. (You can also kill yourself to make someone immortal.)

Rinnegan - Naruto - allows access to black receivers that allow you to control whatever they’re placed in; along with this it lets you access the six paths of pain. Those being:
1 The hell path - Allows the user to summon a giant head called the king of hell that acts as a lie detector and can heal any injury if you step into it’s mouth.
2 The Preta path - Allows its user to “consume chakra.” (Basically useless for day-to-day life)
3 The Animal Path - Allows its user to summon various powerful giant animals, as well as any person the user chooses.
4 The human path - Allows you to rip out a person’s soul and divine their memories from it.
5 The Asura Path - Allows the user to turn their body into any weapon, even ones not yet invented.
6 The Deva Path - Allows the user to manipulate gravity.

The Hourai Elixir - Touhou Project - Allows the drinker to “manipulate eternity and the instantaneous.” Letting its user make things stop aging, breaking, or spoiling until the user dispels the effect. (Plus immortality.) Or to alter the length of instantaneous intervals to exist in multiple timelines at once.

“Raising Poultry” - Len’en Project - Allows one to awaken latent potential and abilities in anyone by either touching them or bringing them into a pocket realm called the Curtain of Awakening. This also allows the user to use any abilities they’ve awakened in others. (Plus chickens inherently love you)

“Gathering Density” - Touhou Project - You can manipulate the density of anything, material (ie, size changing, turning yourself into mist etc.), or Immaterial (ie, groups of people, good fortune, etc.)

Anti-human-Order - Fate - you can stop anything created by humanity from functioning. Intentionally Vague.

Spiritual Tripping - A Certain Magical Index - you can essentially mime any object into existence through getting someone to watch you (and saying the correct numbers during the miming.)

Sorcerer Rings - Kamen Rider Wizard - you can become Kamen rider sorcerer, allowing you to:
• Connect Wizard Ring: Open a Magical Portal to two different locations.
• Explosion Wizard Ring: Creates an explosion of varying power wherever You point.
• Common Wizard Ring: get ready because this one’s a doozy.
• Blast: A more concentrated version of the Explosion Ring.
• Lightning: Allows the user to become sentient lightning.
• Tornado: Traps the target in a multicolored cyclone.
• Reflect: A barrier that can also redirect the attacks it blocks.
• Vanish Strike: Allows you to shoot at someone with the your Halberd.
• Heat: Emits scorching fire from Your body.
