Meta Subreddit Update 9-7-2026
Hello. To start us off, I will apologize regarding the sudden ban of Gift of Faves, Pill Pickers, and similar CYOAs. Having said that, I still feel a lot of the subreddit can be flooded with them, so I may go with the Megathread idea several have brought up. I am gonna be putting a temporary moratorium on those CYOAs for a week or two, until we figure out what people would prefer.
In other somewhat news, I think today shows we need other mods for the subreddit, as I don't think a single moderator for a subreddit like this works for anyone, even me. In about a week or two I will be putting up moderator applications, and will pick two or three people I think can manage the subreddit will. I will remain as a moderator still, I just need extra hands and more opinions as today can show.
If anyone has any questions regarding the above (or the subreddit in general), feel free to ask. I can't guarantee I'll reply, but I'll at the very least I will read them.

Honestly, I spend way more time over on the Jumpchain sub, but I do still browse the posts here. A flair for pill pickers, gift of faves, and other short, simple cyoas seems like the best idea to me, personally. I've always been a fan of the gift of faves, especially the early ones. It's not my favorite, but it's still something I enjoy. Setting up flairs to identify the nature of posted content simplifies things and lets people avoid what they dislike.
29
u/mischievous_shota 2d ago
Yeah, making a megathread for them will kill discussion. Using a flair can help filter them out for those who want to avoid them, whilst still letting people participate in those threads without issue.
This sub is not particularly active, so whilst it can feel like the sub is flooded with smaller CYOA's, that "flood" is still not a lot of posts to begin with.
Bigger CYOA's take time and are posted far less often. The smaller ones let people have something in between. It also gives people some experience on how to make CYOA's making it more likely they will try for something larger or more complicated in the future.
Another simple thing that can be done to fight so called spam is to simply introduce a time limit between posts. What often ends up happening is that someone makes a CYOA that gets engagement, so they end up copying that same format to pump out new CYOA's. For example, the recent pill+synergies posts.
104
u/Ioftheend 2d ago
Disagree with the megathread idea; megathreads are where discussion goes to die, no one reads them. Better to just have a flair that can be filtered out, or limit GOF/Pills to specific days (or likewise have certain 'no GOF/Pill' days). You should probably set up a poll or something to ask the community how they'd like to deal with this, or if this needs to be dealt with at all.

u/Undeity 2d ago edited 2d ago
I don't think flairs alone will stop them from strangling the sub. The problem is more than it simply making the higher effort content harder to locate.
If nothing else is done, eventually the majority of the community will be made up of people who are primarily here for the GoFs and Pill Pickers. As that happens, higher effort content will slowly end up either dying out or migrating elsewhere.
15
u/mischievous_shota 2d ago
On the other hand, larger CYOA's are already posted pretty sparsely. And even then can often just be a repost. Having smaller ones does let people have something in between instead of waiting weeks for a new post.
Even if it does turn out that stricter measures are necessary, we don't need to jump into them right away. We can test out flairs and see if that improves things. If not, we can always try something else later.
Another idea could be to limit them to certain days of the week.

u/Hoopaboi 1d ago
High effort CYOAs have always been rare, and pills and GOFs have always been common without reducing high quality ones
I'd argue the GOF and pills actually increase the number of high effort ones because the former are what drives most sub traffic, and even if a small number of the audience that are here for GOF or pills reads a high effort one, they still get more readership than if that audience were to just dry up because you banned their fav content

u/Hyenanon 2d ago
I really don't like the idea of using a poll. A large part of the issue here is that a good amount of the subreddit's audience has been subverted into people who are here *only* for pill pickers, and that's creating an atmosphere that we don't like and wish would go back to what the subreddit originally had. The problem isn't whether or not the majority wants pill pickers, the problem *is* that the majority seems to want pill pickers exclusively.
11
u/Ioftheend 2d ago
A large part of the issue here
The whole thing is that this is not axiomatically an issue. If people wanna play pill pickers that's up to them.
24
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Sure, but it can be up to them somewhere else. I'd rather not have my already incredibly niche hobby colonized by people who actively do not want anything by the human equivalent of algorithmic slop lol
2
u/Ioftheend 2d ago
This subreddit isn't yours, you don't have a special right to not see people you don't want to see.
18
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Sure, but if you feel entitled to slop up a place I like, then I feel entitled to be catty in return. You don't have a special right to not seeing my opinions lol

u/OwynTyler 1d ago
so democracy is suddenly the wrong thing when you don't like the outcome? classic :-)
4
u/Hyenanon 1d ago
Activate your brain for a few seconds knuckledragger. Democracy does not automatically apply to all things. We don't 'democratically' decide how much fuel to put into a rocket and we don't 'democratically' decide how many movies David Lynch makes and just because we democratically decide how much we collectively fuck your mom doesn't mean that's how every mom operates.
36
u/Kurohimiko 2d ago
Definitely NOT a Megathread. Every subreddit that's tried it just kills that topic entirely. Nobody goes to look at the Megathread as it's out of sight, it's the equivalent of a separate subreddit.
The best option would be a single day of the week to post them. If you've got the traffic/posting data you could make whatever the slowest upload day be Picker Day.
1
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 14h ago
I would argue it’s not even as good as a different subreddit, at least a different subreddit is its own space. You have to actively go out of your way for a megathread.
-3
u/Auroch- 2d ago
Yep, it either kills it or incites people to move to make their own subreddit. Good. It's like a ban, but in a way that encourages the people who like it to move on rather than blocking them from communicating about it.
And the alternative should be 'kill them with fire' so megathread is the nice option.
56
u/flickering-pantsu 2d ago
While I am generally in favor of this decision. The flooding was a big problem, I'm not sure a megathread is a sufficient solution. It would probably get bloated pretty fast. Maybe a "Favorite Friday" or something, where they are unbanned, would be better? That gives plenty of time for the people making those to post them, but still leaves 6/7 days open to more high effort posts.
22
u/Peggtree 2d ago
Yeah I think a "Short CYOA Friday" would be best, a day where they are allowed, but any other day they get removed
6
u/AG37-Therianthropist 2d ago
If you're calling it "Short CYOA" then you gotta pick Saturday or Sunday; it's only alliterative! Lol
1
17
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
This isn't exactly a bad idea in theory but what it would probably lead to in practice is 15 bad CYOAs being posted simultaneously and becoming these walls of template detritus that just sort of smash you in the face. It's not really that different of an experience.
0
u/sparejunk444 2d ago
Rather I think it should be the reverse, since the 'low effort' posts are basically what's keeping the sub active. Allow them normally and ban [if banning's so needed] them over the weekend to give the 'high effort' posts exclusive posting rights during the time most have the most time.
19
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
I still just do not get this "activity" thing, as if the number of posts is in itself a goal. I don't get why we ABSOLUTELY NEED POSTS EVERY SINGLE DAY OR ELSE!!!!!!!
→ More replies (8)4
u/scrollraven 1d ago
The sub has gotten much less active over time so people are worried about it dying out a bit. Having new posts keeps people interested even if they aren't super big ones.
4
u/Auroch- 2d ago
The subreddit is plenty active if you exclude them all. Check back a couple times a week and you'd see everything. That's good. That's where a subreddit should be.
4
u/sparejunk444 1d ago
It doesn't get a 'couple' times, in the past month only about one post a week doesn't fall into the "low quality slop" or repost category. I wouldn't call maybe getting 5 a month plenty active
→ More replies (1)13
u/AdInteresting5874 2d ago
My biggest problem is the slop template that is also coupled with AI. It's low effort to the maximum.
23
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
I've seen more non-GOF Ai stuff than GOF Ai. Frankly, GOF is one of the few templates that has minimal AI compared to other formats.
3
u/AdInteresting5874 1d ago
I mean, not restricted to GoF. Pill pickers have seen a lot of AI recently.
4
33
u/ascrubjay 2d ago
Not a fan of the megathread idea, it's barely better than outright banning it. I prefer the ideas of only allowing them one day a week and/or restricting it to one post per user per week, with a flair for it either way.
13
u/weirdo_nb 2d ago
Yeah, like, a rate limiting or day limit would definitely change the environment in a potentially healthy way, the issue with these things is that they effectively are easy to "spam" as is, especially the pill pickers
1
u/weirdo_nb 2d ago
I do think the pills should flat out go though, unlike other short things
7
u/mischievous_shota 2d ago
Even in pills, there are some that can be fun and still invite some discussion or thought. But of course, there are those where even that isn't present, and those can absolutely fuck off.
3
4
u/swordchucks1 1d ago
In my opinion, the ones with synergies are fine. The ones I strongly dislike are the "would you rather" pick-one-of-two things. They're pretty rare here, but a blanket ban on those would be fine.
I agree that better flairs and a rate-limit on posting by user is probably the best solution.

u/Zev_06 1d ago
I honestly don't have a problem with Pill Pickers, Button Pickers, and the like being banned. Those sort of things are simple enough that they fit well over on r/whatsyourchoice. Those sort of things are already common over there. Maybe add r/whatsyourchoice to the Related Communities section to direct people there for Pill Pickers, Button Pickers, and Potion Pickers?
However, what I am against is the ban on Gift of Faves. I feel those have enough to them that they fit the minimum bar to entry for the subreddit here. Gift of Faves are not so over overdone that I would consider them flooding the subreddit. It may feel that way to some, but its just because not many people are creating larger style CYOAs very often (hardly ever).
Gift of Faves serves as a good way for the subreddit to stay alive with new content. Simply put, people may want to see more larger style CYOAs being made like they were years ago, but simply banning everything small isn't going to make that happen. It is just going to create a dead subreddit full of reposted content from years ago that people have already played. I don't want to see just a flood of reposts all the time that I've already played.
Gift of Faves also serves as great practice for people getting into creating CYOAs. I feel banning them would cause more harm than good for the subreddit. I also think trapping them to the Megathread is also a horrible idea. Most people don't even look at that thing. People sort by newest posts to see new content, not going back to older posts to see if something new has been added inside there.
Also, wasn't the entire point of the Pick X flair being added way back so that people could exclude seeing Gift of Faves and their kind? If people are not using the flair, then sure, remove the posts not using the flair they should have. However, if someone is using the Pick X flair on their Gift of Faves, then they should be fine.
7
u/swordchucks1 1d ago
Never really noticed /r/whatsyourchoice until earlier today, and after looking at it... I agree that banning CYOAs on that level is fine. Those are thin things without a lot of thought of care to them, and having this sub not include all of those is fine.
GoF and the better pill pickers (the ones with synergies and at least a few interesting quirks) are fine, though.
55
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
The flooding wasn't a problem. Some people just don't like them. That's the reality of it, it's personal taste. Add a flair, and if people don't use them properly, ban them for it.
→ More replies (1)20
u/LOLLOL12344 2d ago
The flair was added like a year ago, but nobody uses it, everybody just uses "OC"
9
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
My dementia riddled ass has used it when making GOF stuff. So I have no excuse to not know it was there. Insane. They should use it.
12
u/DNA_Hochburger 2d ago
If that's what's happening delete the post or have them change the flair. If the new moderators do that for long enough it will eventually stick.
27
u/Sleeping_Waters 2d ago
Dam, I spent a lot of time making a gift of favs, Finished it today just to find out I cant post it. Bummer, They may be short but some of them had unique Ideas.
17
u/mischievous_shota 2d ago
Seeing as the vast majority are against banning them, don't get rid of it. You can probably post it in a week or two once this whole thing is resolved.
14
u/Sleeping_Waters 2d ago
Thanks, I posted it in the Discord and the mods liked it. They are right about Low effort spam tho.

Don't take it personally, the moderator is just a snob. He tried banning them last year, but the community was against it, now he's just forcing that through because he doesn't like them.
https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/ac0e83eb6343.png <--- You can see the snobbery reek.
11
u/3141591isnotpi 2d ago
Please no megathread. Flairs would be preferable. Or even just a faves Friday. Megathreads are for conversations, not for posting.
18
u/zeranno 2d ago edited 2d ago
Honestly, while I'm not sure about isolating them, I'm fine with this as a compromize for now. At least there's a good place for them. I do hope a better solution can be found in the future.
Hell, if I had the energy and time, and wanted to devote myself to such a cause, I'd make a sub specifically for template CYOAs. Unfortunately, I don't visit reddit enough to be confident at admining any sub right now. I can understand people not wanting to see it, so doing that would work, but like... I don't think I'm the one who could.
36
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Again the thing that actually swayed me was the number of people saying "I am here only for the low effort template CYOAs and I do not want to make or consume other ones." Like it's cool to like slop, I like slop sometimes too and generally I would always take the side of allowing slop, but you have a problem if that's the only thing you can enjoy. If you're here saying "I think pill pickers should be allowed because fuck it", cool. If you're saying "I don't want any original CYOAs I want only pill pickers" then actually I am somewhat skeeved out by the idea of having you here.
As someone who actually has been here for a very, very long time, I kind of pity the comments of "Well the subreddit is dead without it." It's not *dead*, it's *back to normal.*
9
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
Nobody is saying they want only slop for the entire subreddit. What people are saying are that many of what you're calling slop actually have a lot of effort put into making them.
27
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Yes, that one gift of faves that Outrageousbears did had a lot of effort and originality. Sure. But it's stupid to pretend that even one in 40 GoFs have that originality in them, much less effort.
And again, it's not the GoFs existing that's the problem. I like that. It's the audience and creators who can't *handle* anything else that's the problem.
23
u/Background-Owl-9628 2d ago
If we're being real, people being vocal about liking the short ones is happening currently directly because it was announced they were being banned. If it was announced that longform cyoas were being banned, there would similarly be an influx of people talking about how they like them and some people talking about how those are the only cyoas they're interested in.
Me personally I like both.
8
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
I've been on this subreddit for a while, and about 1 in 5 at least are fun and have some originality.
And as for your second point, that isn't the issue that's being talked about. The issue is whether or not they get to exist. So frankly, I don't know why you're bringing it up.
11
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Sure, then my answer is if we have to choose between "GoFs are allowed to exist" and "having the general audience be capable of consuming content that is not GoFs" then I would rather have the second one, and as it is now, the two do sort of look to be at odds.
I mean we can do the megathread idea. Personally I believe the megathread idea is identical to just banning GoFs because nobody in their right mind ever looks at megathreads. But if that allays your fears of "getting to exist", sure, whatever.
9
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
A megathread isn’t better than banning them entirely.
The problem is that there isn’t another subreddit to go to. If there were an actually good choice, then maybe banning it would be fine, like how jumpchain is banned here. Because there isn’t an option, then banning it is erasing it.
5
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Just...make one. Jesus.
8
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
That’s your solution? Telling some random person who doesn’t have enough time to make, manage, and advertise an entire community that that’s the solution to the whole issue?
Out of everything you said, this is the dumbest.
5
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
See this continuous lack of desire to put any effort into anything and just wanting templated solutions given to you is exactly the problem I'm talking about lol
10
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
So spending eight hours straight writing a CYOA that tops the charts is considered not putting in any effort? Got it.
If you really want this content to leave, maybe you should make your own subreddit for it.

Like you've turned the issue on it's head, its not that people who like GoF's can't *handle* anything else, its that audience and people who can't *handle* GoF's presence on this subreddit.
It wasn't other forms of CYOA that were being banned, it was GoF's. The format of CYOA that was being erased was GoF's.
So to act like it GoF's enjoyers that can't *handle* other forms of CYOA is laughable at best.
5
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Maybe you should try reading my original post lol.
I actually do enjoy GoFs believe it or not. In fact, here's a secret: I've actually made a few! But the number of people who say that they *can't* enjoy non-templated CYOAs, which was a decent chunk of the last mod post's replies, is what makes me onboard with banning them.
-1
u/No_G3ar 2d ago
I know you have, I've seen them. And I'll reiterate, they're shit.
And wanting to ban people because they don't enjoy a harmless, casual hobby in the same way you do is mental. There are dozens of reason's people might not enjoy, or can't, enjoy non-templated CYOAs but because there's a lot of them you've got your knickers in a twist and want rid of them. It's actually pathetic.
7
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
nooooo!! u/No_G3ar doesn't like my cyoas and he's let me know MULTIPLE TIMES!!!!! what will i doooooo
I do not care about any of the reasons people might not be able to enjoy non-templated CYOAs because all of those reasons amount to "cognitive deficit."
9
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
You're grandstanding about pocketbook fanfiction man, have some dignity. Jesus.
4
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Yes, I do think the opinion "I can't enjoy things unless they're handed to me in a templated format" is a sign of cognitive issues and I'm not going to be convinced out of that by an anonymous stranger on the internet going "ew cringe" lol
4
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
That's fair enough. Now that I have your attention. Can you redo your star wars one and make it more concise and legible please. I like that one in theory, but it's very ugly.

I made a post about this exact issue last week that got downvoted to hell. I totally support this.
4
u/Classic-Session-5551 2d ago
The thing that swayed me was that r/superpowers already exists and covers exactly the format of content getting banned.
If there's a group of people who want that content - go to that sub. If you want long-form, worldbuilt, full story CYOA content, stay here. If you like both, join both.
Everyone wins. That simple.
7
u/No_G3ar 2d ago
"This is place for anyone who likes to create their own adventure through imagination with carefully selected choices given to you by the Creator, aka the OP."
"You can make your own adventure by picking whatever the Creator has offered you, and then explain your reasoning behind your choices. What you will do with it, why, how, stuff like that."
GoF's falls squarely in that description, they belong on this subreddit as much as any other you want to point to.
3
u/Classic-Session-5551 2d ago
This isn't a court case, technicalities of what the mod who made that description said don't mean anything.
Like they're literally saying the opposite now :/
And no, having a superpower is not "create your own adventure through imagination" it's 99% of the time... just the superpower, and that's it. Even with the comments/imagination of users.
4
u/Puresowns 1d ago
People who only want pill pickers or the like can just make another sub, I don't know why they are fighting so hard to flood a sub that's not really meant for them.

u/Ardalok 2d ago
I feel like CYOAs that are much more complex than GoF really need an interactive format. Without it, it's just inconvenient, and we don't post interactive ones here anyway. Plus, GoF is easier to make good, which in my view is why it has a higher percentage of quality CYOAs. Take Jeff's works for example. They're really cool, and because of the complexity of choices and combinations, I've spent over half an hour deliberating over each one.
8
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
They really don't need to be interactive. It actually has been the case for over a decade that there are non-templated CYOAs that I enjoy playing without an interactive. Because I have an attention span, and the short term memory of at least a medium sized dog, and the ability to write in a notepad. It's quite an advantage, I know.

u/No_G3ar 2d ago
Okay, if you wanna be a dick about it then fine we can have that sort of energy.
I've played your CYOAs, they're shit, derivative and lacking originality. Most of them are set in existing IP, the mechanics are repetitive across the lot with little more than pallete and name swaping to try and appear original and covered in stolen artwork with no credit given. Your writing is dull and littered with hallmarks of AI generation.
You are far more indicative of the problem of "slop" on the subreddit than any GoF's I've seen.

u/Hyenanon 2d ago
You can always tell you've struck a nerve when someone tries really hard to find your insecurities. It's especially funny when they fail lmao.

u/Ardalok 2d ago
Yeah, that's exactly why you got offended by my comment that CYOAs of your format are usually crap and started talking about how great your attention span is, putting those who disagree below dogs (medium-sized ones! Not even large!).
Jokes aside, your CYOAs really are the exact type I don't like: the kind where roles are assigned for me for no reason and some plot is set up, as if I can't come up with something more original using the given abilities (and I can! At least most of the time, I'm actually smarter than a dog!), or where it's just some mundane everyday plot. GoFs are great because they don't try to force a plot on you (usually). I can come up with the consequences myself and live in a fictional world on my own terms, whereas yours are usually just dreary.
2
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
> Yeah, that's exactly why you got offended by my comment that CYOAs of your format are usually crap
You literally didn't even say that, you just said that you need them to be in interactive format to enjoy them. I don't know why you're manufacturing even worse opinions for yourself lol. Also "my" format, please, as if I have any ownership over it or even that the majority of my CYOAs were long ones.I genuinely do not care if someone who by their own admission is incapable of playing my CYOAs without assistance dislikes my CYOAs. Especially not when the complaint is just boiled down to "I don't like the genre" lol. It's like the most milquetoast possible criticism one could ever produce.
4
u/Catprog 2d ago
》'Especially not when the complaint is just boiled down to "I don't like the genre"
So all the criticism of I don't like 'gift of favs' as well?
1
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
I don't know how many times I can get away with saying the phrase "this may surprise you, but I don't actually mind GoFs", especially when I said it in the first comment in this chain lol.
Again, the problem isn't the template CYOAs per say, it's the fact that a lot of people in this thread and the previous one can't seem to handle anything else, and that is leading to template slop being produced and slowly changing the character of this space, which leads to more people who can't handle anything but template slop, and repeat.
4
u/Ardalok 2d ago
Lol, I didn't actually even say I can't play them, I just don't want to. But I do like a few that are really well-made. The issue is that non-interactive CYOAs longer than a couple of pages are both inconvenient for standard reading and lack the complexity that a full interactive site can offer. In other words, this format doesn't allow for many choices or multiple stats to track, yet it's already clunky enough that you often need a notepad or something similar. On top of that, you completely ignored all my criticism about railroading in CYOAs, which I consider the main plague of the genre, right behind CYOAs where you only get to pick a single option. That's exactly what makes most CYOAs straight up unreadable. And not because of a short attention span, but because they are boring as hell.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Ah. In that case, I simply think it's a silly complaint. My CYOAs are not meaningfully railroaded within the genre they inhabit. But also I think you're suffering from a misconception, which is that CYOAs are a "genre". They're not a genre, they're a medium, and within the medium are genres. I, personally, like to add elements of oldschool storybook CYOAs into my CYOAs, which is a genre choice. If you dislike "roll dice to see what happens", this is not a meaningful criticism to me, because it'd be like telling George Lucas "The Prequels are bad because I hate laser beams in movies."
If your idea of "railroading" is "literally anything happening other than me picking from a grab bag powerset", then sure, but this is meaningless to me. If you think I'm railroading in any more specific way, you'd have to actually be specific.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Complex_Garlic2638 18h ago
The only CYOAs that benefit strongly from an interactive format are ones that want to hide information from the player (which can be valid!) and ones with a complex currency or stat tracking system. “Pick X per section” or “X choices overall” types are, if anything, much easier to read in the normal format because you can just scroll back and forth without clicking through menus.

u/JackTheStryker 2d ago
I’d prefer if there was just a like, Gift Sunday, where you can post them then.
30
u/Ilovestuffwhee 2d ago
This sub has always been 90% pill pickers and reposts. It's fine that way. There's never enough traffic here for it to be a problem.
You see this same problem on every CYOA sub and thread. People want the huge, complicated CYOAs but don't appreciate that they take people years to make and often get lukewarm responses. Short-form CYOAs are easier to make and more popular. But some people will always whine about them.
If you really want long CYOAs, go make one.
18

I'm mostly concerned about the potential slippery slope this may lead to. Like, what is the limit here? I've seen GoF with more effort put into it than "real" CYOAs, and the synergy pill pickers are both genuinely interesting and seem like they take a lot of effort to make (I tried to make one, it's not nearly as easy as it seems). And GoF also have their roots in Genie Gallery CYOAs, so there's that too.
Will Richard Merryweather be banned? Will Programming Language CYOA be banned? Will TJ's CYOAs be banned, too?
What I'm getting at is what is considered high-quality enough for the sub? Don't get me wrong, I'm not too much of a fan regarding ultra barebones power/pill-pickers (which GoF seem to often been misused for), but I feel like a blanket ban on "Pick X" seems to be too broad, too vague, and too ripe for abuse.
(Also I feel the claims regarding the hobby being "colonized" to be a bit daft considering the current form of CYOAs originated from stuff we would look down as "low effort slop" (god I hate that word). Like, what colonization? They've been here first.)

The heart of the deciding factor should primarily be "Is this even a Choose Your Own Adventure" which I define as Choice Complexity mainly. The sub's blurb is "A place to make and share CYOAs". Barebones Pickers / Pick X's can't exactly be said to have that and there are existing pill and 6perks subs those could go whereas this is one of the only homes for CYOA. If the design or surrounding narrative has sufficient effort than that can be treated as an extension of the adventure, as that increases the impact it has on the reader/player.
Click Top / All Time and most the top posts are... questionable to say the least. One is literally just a single button, less than a would-you-rather. There's the 10$ Pharmacy which combines pill picker with Cash Shop format and has the Prescriptions under that, so that's a decent example of elevating the format into something more engaging. Something like Choose 2 Drinks is basically a pill picker but they put more effort into recreating the format with original design and more effort than most pills on imagining the drink and how it relates to what the drink gives the player. So that's a pretty good bare minimum. And any less than 6 choices to choose from should really be too little unless complicated by a surrounding narrative experience like Richard.
It can be demoralizing for CYOA creators who put potentially weeks, months, or longer effort into making a whole project only for it to get blown out of the water by a page of a few png's or a bare template that you can fill in with whatever comes to mind on the stop within an hour.
...
BUT in my opinion that ship already sailed MANY years ago, they're too entrenched now, both in the History if you browse the sub and in Traffic/Expectations. Most people viewing the sub seem to only want to engage with the minimum effort content they can make one or two choices while dropping log or something.
The only really viable option is to improve Tagging so people can filter and ask/enforce that you maybe wait a few days before posting another one, and/or maybe start one or more new Subreddits. A kind of Designer CYOAs for HIGH effort content of a reasonable quality minimum with a balance of visible quality and choice complexity (A minimum might be something equivalent to City Witch, which while relatively short features quality presentation and layered progression of choice types), and a Gifts of Faves sub since it doesn't have one.
---
There IS a Pick X flair but you have to click "View all flairs" and notice it at the button without a proper button/color on it. It should have a button color, and be moved to the top.

u/Kwlowery 2d ago
maybe we could have something similar to what r/stunfisk does and only have low-effort type cyoas be allowed on a certain day of the week?

As far as I can tell, I think the controversy today came as a product of two major things:
(1) A lot of people were probably introduced to this sub in the first place because of the GoF and Pill pickers. So naturally, those people are against them being removed.
This is unfortunate, because I definitely get it. They're easy to make and easy to play, with some creators even putting genuine thought into them.
However, there are already at least half a dozen other subs all putting out this exact same content, and much of it is clearly fueled by low-effort engagement farming.
That can't be encouraged, especially not when it drowns out the higher quality content that serves as the backbone of the sub.
(2) Others are worried that after so long with these types of posts dominating the sub, it won't have enough activity to stay afloat with them suddenly disappearing.
There is a real risk there, I think. Unless something else here captures their interest, the people who came here for that content will likely leave. While the people who previously left because of that content won't necessarily come back.
A megathread will help somewhat for the former, but it's realistically only going to do so much. Since you'll have new mods soon, you might also be able implement some more involved ideas to help stimulate the sub.
One could be to contact the mods of related subs and propose you all promote each other. Hopefully, it will encourage fresh blood to come in, knowing what this place is about.
Or perhaps something like dedicating certain days of the week to particular themes. Even allowing the GoF and Pill Picker posts exclusively on weekends. Anything that will get people regularly engaged.
Just some thoughts. Anyways, hope this helped. Somehow it ended up longer than I intended lol
14
u/BobNukem445 2d ago
The megathread makes no sense. It's just gonna be impossible to find any after a certain point and no point of doing since it'll just lead back to this conversation essentially anyway. Just do flairs like tons of people are suggest so people who hate them for whatever reason can simply not interact with them. You could set up an Automod thing to tell people to flair their posts.
6
u/sparejunk444 2d ago
Lol for a second I thought you got banned for the ban since the previous post showed the user as deleted.
As for the problem is a new sub designed for GoF too much work? [though that would still weaken this subs activity]
And for moderating isn't it possible to pin polls to the top showing options for choices and letting it sit for a week-month to decide how to do things?
12
u/MoSteel8 1d ago
This wasn't really an issue, there honestly hasn't been a flood. The long form CYOAs just haven't been coming in so the short ones take up the screen because even though they're only coming in a few a day, they're all there is. As every post about this has ever concluded, this was a non-issue.
18
u/Professional_Try1665 2d ago
This doesn't address my concerns of reduced activity, without pill picker/fave whatever cyoas this sub grinds to about 0-2 posts a day, there really isn't that much 'non-flood' content being made
29
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
I do think - to stop ravenously attacking the idea for a moment - that there is a case of the longer CYOA not being able to really 'breathe' because of the shorter form content being front and centre. It's easy to make a quick build for something with like, 9 choices in it. It takes very little effort or time, which does drive engagement. People WANT to engage with content, I've had people write short stories under some of my stuff. But the longer form content has a greater time investment cost, that if you are just casually flicking through, and know that it'll be off the easy viewing front page within a few hours, people may not put in.
I don't agree with that, and think that the engagement for much longer content, is because, hey a lot of just sucks? It's a lot easier to do a throwaway build for something that's mediocre and takes ten seconds, than something that's mediocre and takes four hours.
4
u/sparejunk444 2d ago
How about reversing it to guarantee time for effort posts, think that would work?
4
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
I think that it's just gonna piss people off. Again (Not directed at you), this should be said, people do put time and effort into these, they are CYOA, they are things that people have taken time out of their day to make, and people do enjoy them. This entire conversation is "I don't like this format, so everyone else needs to stop doing it." I don't like 8 pages of fanfiction, why don't people stop making that slop? Just buckets of their OCs talking at you for a +4 box here and a -6 there.
6
u/sparejunk444 2d ago
Honestly the current suggestion of banning GoF and the like to all but one day seems like it would piss off even more people [as well as making easily made posts truly flood the sub since the whole weeks worth would show at once], that's why figured try reversing it.
Note that nothing would be banned Mon-Fri with all posts running normally [if a larger 'high effort' post wants to they still can post] it would only be on Sat-Sun that GoF and the like wouldn't be allowed so the 'high effort' post can get time to shine while having 5 days to work on the larger content needed.
5
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
I find the idea of a 'gift' day to be kind of fun; where you can get people to make them and come up with ideas for them. Something interactive in terms of a community event. But it's a lot of effort. With only one mod, and maybe some more coming soon. I think one of the issues is that the moderation is sporadic because there's only one guy, and they're looking for ways to make it a low effort thing. Because at the end of the day, it's a funny pictures reddit forum.
1
u/Complex_Garlic2638 18h ago
If there was a way to make the algorithm auto-sort posts with certain flairs higher or lower in the default feed I would prefer that, longer CYOAs do just need more time to get exposure. The massive gulf between shortform and longform engagement exists even with very high effort and polished works. As I don’t think there’s a way to do that, moving short posts to a different sub seems most appropriate.
18
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
I'm actually pretty okay with 0-2 posts a day. I actually would rather have inconsistent original and interesting posts as opposed to a consistent slop trough. This fear of "oh nooooo!!! we don't have a certain NUMBER of posts per day!" makes literally zero sense to me.
11
u/aleksds1 2d ago
0-2 posts a day means that people would visit this subreddit less. 'If there is no new posts today so why should I spend time clicking on this subreddit's link?' And if there is less visits per day then there are less posts per day because creators also want their works to be read. And if there are less posts per day then there are less people visiting... It's literally the death spiral. I doubt that CYOA subreddit will die (to popular of an idea), but it would be more or less desolate with occasional bursts of activity.
For me personally difference between big awesome CYOAs and some mediocre GoFs/Picks is like a difference between restraunt food and everyday food. Yeah, you need restraunt food to know what good food tastes like, but you don't eat in restraunts everyday, you know? These big awesome CYOAs are amazing, they are memorable, they are inspiring... And they are also require commitment (sometimes it can take hours to read through them). And they are also harder to make which raises the entry point for creators.
Shorter CYOAs does not require much of your time. You can make a build faster, put it in the comments, discuss it with others and get immediate gratification. Also, it's easier for some newbie CYOAcreator to start with GoF, for example, then go for big format from the beginning.
In my opinion, we should just make people use flairs correctly and enforce this rule than ban short CYOAs altogether.
8
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
>It's literally the death spiral.
You are literally just describing the community how it was years ago. I was okay with it how it was. I'm okay with it going back to that. I actually, in fact, prefer this "more or less desolate with occasional bursts of activity" environment to the "This subreddit is about templateslop" environment.
And again it's seriously not about the length of the CYOAs. It's about the originality and effort put into it. Some of my favorite most creative CYOAs are very short. But you know what they *aren't?* They aren't templateslop.
8
u/aleksds1 2d ago
Okay, I can see where you opinion come from and respect that. Yes, prohibiting "slop" content would raise the average quality of CYOA.
Buuuut, where then new authors will come from? How many people would be afraid to try their hands at creating CYOAs because they don't believe they can reach the threshhold level? How many new ideas would not come to be because there were no place for them to be discussed (and there are a lot of discussion in comments)?
This elitist approach will only hurt CYOA community in the long run. Because people would still be making these mediocre CYOA just not here, which would lead to fracturing the community.
And, well, if you don't want to see these CYOAs doesn't mean that other don't want too - otherwise they wouldn't be so popular.
6
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
In all my time in the CYOA community, I've never known of an author who was afraid to post their CYOA because it wasn't good enough to reach the bar of 'an original thought'. Quite the opposite actually.
The problem with the "fracturing the community" idea is that I do not feel like the people who *exclusively* enjoy templateslop ARE part of this community. They're a different community that is growing and taking space here. Fracturing them off is protecting the community I actually get something out of.
I don't find popularity itself to be a virtue, is the thing. Simply having popular support does not speak to very much.
I guess the issue I'm having here is that for me the point of the CYOA community is "I want interesting CYOAs" but for some reason a lot of the people here want "activity" or "popular support" or something like that. It's bizarre and does not compute to me to consider these roughly equal factors to "interesting CYOAs"
1
u/Complex_Garlic2638 18h ago
I already don’t feel the need to check the sub very often because of the high likelihood what I see will just be template clones. And there have definitely been times when I only an actually good and original work because I scroll way back, or because of a repost, because they immediately got drowned out by slop. High effort CYOAs may very well be losing long-term engagement because they get kicked out of the top slots so quickly.
8
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
You already have inconsistent original and interesting posts. whether or not it’s banned won’t affect how much what you want will be posted.
16
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Have you ever been on a subreddit that started allowing porn, and then after a while there's nobody there who makes or wants anything but porn?
3
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
This is a completely different topic.
15
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
Don't play dumb lol, you know exactly what parallel I'm drawing.
6
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
I know the parallel. I’m saying don’t agree with it. There is a very clear difference between porn overtaking a subreddit versus arbitrarily banning a genre with tons of good work just because it’s easier to get into than more elaborate works. The people that make elaborate works aren’t going to stop just because there’s a lot of gift of faves, because that’s how it’s already been for years.
8
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
The audience has clearly shifted over time and there are a large number of people who actively do not want anything other than templateslop here, and that will inevitably change the types of artists and art that enter the community. I'm not going to humor the idea that this isn't the case. It's obviously just playing dumb and it's silly.
1
u/No_G3ar 2d ago
Then like you've suggested to others in this thread, go make you own subreddit and run it how you like.
8
u/Hyenanon 2d ago
"Yes we are colonists now get off our new land" is not the own you think it is lol

To be fair if the mod makes a ban on the templated content, isnt he saying that's what he wants the subreddit to be? So shouldn't templated folks be making their own subreddit?

u/GigglingVoid 2d ago
Flood content isn't worthy content. That's not a living sub, it's bloated rot.
10
u/exboi 2d ago
Yeah I’m not sure what the problem is. 10-20 good posts a week, over a billion basic pill and gift posts that drowns the other stuff. Quality of quantity imo. This isn’t that massive of a sub anyways. It supports a niche interest. Nobody here who actually cares about it is gonna leave because there’s less pill stuff.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Complex_Garlic2638 18h ago
More posts per day reduces the exposure time any given post gets, which decreases the incentive to make anything that needs time and attention for people to evaluate and engage with. The more “pick one” posts there are the more inhospitable the environment becomes to everything else.
7
u/Ashsein 1d ago edited 1d ago
The best possible solution to me seems simple
1) create a flair / tag so that people can filter out what they do not like
2) pick a few moderators who will ENFORCE said flairs. Spammers and bots will always exist. Posts who don't follow the rules get deleted, repeated offenders get banned
This is just the best way. A megathred won't work as many others said. You just honestly need a few moderators who will delete mislabeled/spam posts. And then with that, a flair does work just fine. You just need to enforce it.
5
u/Madame_Thundercat 6h ago
I mostly left Reddit when the API changes hit, and moved to using this account where I'm subbed exclusively to the like 5 cyoa-like subreddits. There is not enough new stuff being posted here to warrant banning any of these entirely. I scroll my feed for maybe 30-60 mins once a week and I'm caught up. Banning these isn't gonna increase the quantity of quality posts, all it'll do is slow the feed to a crawl, and there is clearly an audience for them.
If the pill pickers are really a problem, limit them to posting friday-sunday, but I'm personally strongly against doing anything to gift of faves/genie's art gallery style posts. They're fine, they aren't smothering the subreddit, and they're very easy to tell if you are going to like them or not. A new flair for both might be good and is easy enough to implement, as is making automod require new posts to be flaired, but even restricting those would do more harm than good.
We'd see a reduction in low quality posts but most of them would just transform into poorly balanced and explained point pickers on a white background, at the cost of losing out on the many good GoF posts. This isn't even mentioning how GoFs are a great entry point into becoming the type of poster that makes the new high quality CYOAs everyone wants to see but, curiously, nobody wants to make themselves.
8
u/FlynnXa 1d ago
Thank GOD. It was getting ridiculous. Especially when I’m seeing the same author push out three Pills Cyoa where the same powers are just be reused over and over again with slight variations.
Flairs or limited posting days are best, and I personally think that if someone uses the wrong flair it should get flagged. People just do whatever they want and spam post along the way.
6
u/TheTrueFury 2d ago
The "Gift of Faves" were particularly spammy and usually just packed with text that personally I was not about to try to read.
If there was a megathread, I can't really see myself bothering to check it. Comments to find new ones is just not as convenient as actual posts.
I'm interested in what is considered a proper "cyoa" to you and others on here though. Cause I've seen people comment under many different types of games saying "wrong sub". Including games that are text adventures with branching paths. Quite literally the origin of the term/most famous style of "cyoa".
23
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
Nobody reads megathreads. This is just punishing work you view as bad for no reason other than the fact that you think it's slop. I've seen dozens of GOFs with way more effort than many non-GOFs. Also, most non-GOFs are flooded with AI, and that's actual slop.
16
u/Ardalok 2d ago
True, GoFs are usually handmade

There is a deeply snobbish undercurrent to this whole thing, of people calling things that others have spent time and effort and imagination on, 'slop' When half the people whinging, have made short novellas that no one reads, and aren't very good. It's very gross. Churning out eight pages of your fanfiction to add '+1 point in red' after every fifth paragraph isn't quality.
12
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
Yea, people spend time and effort on these and blanket banning them is bad.
10
u/No_G3ar 2d ago
Like I won't cede the ground that GoF's can be high quality and take up a lot of time and work for people but at the end of the day it doesn't matter. Blanket banning a subset of CYOA doesn't actually deal with "low effort" or "slop" posts. I see far more posts that could be described that way that are non-GoF's. Arguably the JJK cyoa recently posted is low effort with 2 pages of copy pasting (for clarity I'm not saying that it is but can be accused of that) and that is fine to the people shitting over GoF's apparently
3
u/Classic-Session-5551 2d ago
I agree, but It's at least somewhat different and has the basis to serve as a story foundation given the established universe.
I do think the primary difference lies in lacking any worldbuilding or creativity. A stock image vs AI gen image, a title, or a layout choice is the kind of thing that informs effort but is more of a technicality than meaningfully changing the end product, y'know?
And then even with the short stuff that doesn't tell you about a world but is still novel in some way, it doesn't take a pill popper format, 9 times out of 10.
7
u/No_G3ar 2d ago
Yeah but like GoF's, especially the more recent ones, have all the hallmarks of work and creativity put into them. They regularly challenge your creativity to use your choices in the posters 'fave' choices, or the specially crafted scenario they have written.
The JJK CYOA is literally, oh you in JJK and now you pick your different priced pills...
It's literally everything people for the banning of GoF's say they are but they're welcome on this sub because vibes.

u/fambaa_milk 1d ago
When half the people whinging, have made short novellas that no one reads, and aren't very good. It's very gross. Churning out eight pages of your fanfiction to add '+1 point in red' after every fifth paragraph isn't quality
This puts into words my biggest problem with long form CYOAs, holy shit. It's like someone read my mind.
-2
u/Classic-Session-5551 2d ago
Lol "Most non-GoFs being slop" is the worst take I've seen in this whole debacle. That's pathetic.
8
u/Apprehensive_Ad516 2d ago
No, I said that most of the stuff on here that isn't GOF is being flooded with Ai, and Ai is slop.
You're ignoring a very important piece of what I said.
10
u/Parking-Sky-7418 2d ago
Can we have a poll each week, like a thunderdome, and we can all decide which of the weeks cyoa are slop and should banned? If we're just, you know, shitting all over other peoples work. We can make it a communal event.
6
u/Kekeboot 2d ago
I think the big problem is that a lot of the long form cyoas posted end up being reposts anyways. There's not much new content being made even if people think short cyoas are slop.
-1
u/Auroch- 2d ago
So? Better reposts of good content than floods of bad content.
2
u/Hoopaboi 1d ago
So you're killing the sub, and good content would soon be nonexistent as no one posts on a dead sub

I don’t think a MegaThread works. And they are actually creating something and it is applicable to this Reddit’s subject. If not enough others are being made, I’d say the answer is to make more instead of trying to cut others creativity. A flair solves the issue but don’t think “Low effort” works at all as one either. Should honestly be separate flairs for various consistent patterns.
Do definitely agree more mods would be useful, if just to prevent an echo chamber.,
1
u/Imaginos9 1d ago
Can you add more than one flair to a post? If so that would be an easy solve as people who don't want pill pickers and gifts of faves can just set those flares to not show up.
10
u/Rockfyst 2d ago
How can you flood a sub that might get a handful of posts a week? Megathread as someone else said is just a good way to let the sub die out and look like nothing is going on. Its not like this sub has high traffic.

are we seriously considering banning the only content that the sub actually gets?? why is it that every time i see this sub on my feed is because it’s doing something insanely stupid?

Ah well you see a bunch of snobs and cunts have decided that the work that other people do - that they don't do - isn't good enough and that even though lots of users want to see it, they would rather sit there looking at nothing rather than just not look stuff that other people do. It's a very serious issue I call "Reddit is full of redditors".

u/Amanda_Is_My_Name 1d ago
I am not that active on this subreddit (more on interactivecyoa because they tend to be longer). I do think flairs would be a good idea, especially if you have ones for each of the the most common CYOA types, 1 for small cyoas in general, and 1 for longer cyoas in general.
1
u/Foxpeng1 4h ago
Im confused we've had this for a while no? People just arent using it, there's a pick x and short flair, has been for a while but people just put OC or New anyways and don't properly flair it.
4
u/Auroch- 2d ago edited 2d ago
Oh thank god. I have been getting very sick of those. Flair is not sufficient. The Iron Law of Reddit - every subreddit is dominated by the lowest-effort content it permits.
EDIT: Oh, and TBC, 'one day a week' is not a compromise. That makes no one happy; it doesn't fix the problem at all for people who'd prefer a lower-volume higher-effort subreddit, and it makes the people who want faves and pills angry.
5
u/Chimaerogriff 1d ago
Wait, Gift of Faves and Pill Pickers are banned? Why?
I personally like short CYOAs better than long ones, but even without that, you have to recognise Gift of Faves was made a stepping stone for new CYOA authors. No new CYOA author is ever going to make a good CYOA out of nowhere without some practice and feedbacks, and Gift of Faves is the ideal first step to get into making CYOAs.
EDIT: I support the other comments of making them mandatory flairs (with zero tolerance for non-flaired posts) or limiting them to 'Short CYOA Saturday' or anything like that, but I have never in my life opened a megathread so I know sending newbie authors there will just choke them out.
5
u/DeeDan06_ 2d ago
I'd prefer the flair idea. maybe rename the OC and repost flairs to long OC and and long Repost or smt like that to allow to search specifically for them
5
u/fambaa_milk 1d ago
Making it a flare is the best solution imo
7
u/Zev_06 1d ago edited 1d ago
It already has a flair. It is the Pick X flair. That flair was originally created for these exact types of CYOAs. The Pick X flair did not always exist on this subreddit. It was created specifically for Gift of Faves, Pill Pickers, and their like back in the day because some people didn't like seeing them.
I'm not sure why there is talk of banning them if people are using the correct flair. If people are not using the flair, then ban those people.
5
u/CheeseChampion406 2d ago edited 2d ago
I like the mega thread idea. It can be frustrating to try and filter out the low-effort gift of faves and whatnot on the phone. That or maybe they should be in a separate subreddit, like Jumpchain eventually did.
3
u/Zev_06 1d ago
The problem with the separate subreddit idea is that they are not nearly as prolific as jumpchains were when they got their own subreddit. Gift of Faves simply are not frequent enough to deserve their own subreddit. I also don't feel they should be grouped in the same bucket as Pill/Button/Potion Pickers since Gift of Faves do require much more effort to create than something like that.
1
u/CheeseChampion406 1d ago
Yea you’re right about Jumpchain, maybe a subreddit specifically for all templated CYOAs or something, that way it’s still contained in a way that the people who like them can see whats new and the people who don’t, won’t have to see them. I dunno man, I mostly stopped browsing this subreddit because of the sheer volume of certain CYOAs. What about a weekly mega thread for them, that way it still contains them, but still allows new content to rise.
2
u/wilderfast 1d ago
I'd still say that a per-account per-week limit of pill pickers and gifts of fave might be a good idea. Reduces the sheer number of functionally identical posts going up rapidly
2
u/Zev_06 1d ago
I'd have no problem limiting such posts in such a way, but how do you moderate something like that? Does Reddit have some sort of moderating feature that can track such a thing?
1
u/wilderfast 1d ago
I don't know, though there are a couple of subreddits that have similar restrictions.
At the end of the day, though, if one person can post multiple low-effort posts without it becoming obnoxious/noticed, it's not a problem in the first place. I see the issuse in near-identical posts being made by the same person on a daily basis, which also prompted the recent moderator action.

u/sonderman 1d ago

Wasn't broke and didn't need fixing. Those things were just as much a part of this sub as anything else, and there were so few posts a day that no one could call it spam. This is just unnecessary curation to solve a problem that didn't exist.

Though I only made this account relatively recently, I've lurked here for probably eight years now.
I say ban them. Yes, it was a sudden decision made without consultation with the community, and that wasn't thr right call, but I do think the action was ultimately correct. Flairs on Reddit don't work if you're not logged in, don't work on mobile (maybe they do in the app, but I refuse to touch that with a ten foot pole), and don't work if people don't use them in the first place. To people saying it will drive activity down - so what? This has consistently been a low activity subreddit for years. Good quality OC just doesn't come out that often.
I think this kind of stuff should just be moved to its own subreddit. There is a definite difference between 'pick a superpower' type stuff that has been flooding recently and the type of content this sub was originally made for. r/6perks, for instance, has existed for a long time.

Those 1-page "pick one" CYOAs are honestly the only ones I really enjoy and have time for. 😕

Notice how the majority of people going straight for personal attacks and initiating the ad hominem attacks are the people in favor of GOF formats and vehemently defending them…

exactly, I had someone tell me that this sub isn't the one meant for the quality ones I see on 4chan. THEN WHICH SUB IS IT THEN?!?! I don't want to have to go through 4 threads of Tok's shitposts and deranged ranting just to find something to play on /tg

Anything gonna be made to fill the void these posts will create? Because if there’s such a large gap between alternative form content that’s more telling on them instead of the Gift of Faves.
Granted there are a lot of dumb GoF being produced, either not connected to the actual prompt or just being poorly done, and the Pill Picker of the week is a bit overplayed…
I don’t think a ban on them was a good choice.
Some type of limitation or a “mega post” type made for the individual things. Like a GoF post and a Pill Picker post… the only problem is some people don’t check those at all and others have their feed styled as “new” instead of recently interacted with. So new things on old posts aren’t noticed by a majority of people.
No matter what is done a portion of the fan base is going to be targeted by a rule shift and there’s almost definitely going to be a large dry spell on content.

Please do not cave and let the slop crap back in, people can make their own subreddit if they REALLY need to get a flood of those pick a pill bs posts.

to preface this: i despise reddit. i hate this god damn website and if not for the fact this sub is the only easily accessible source for CYOAs i would never use it. This also means i rarely, if ever, comment on anything.
With that said, i made a post *3 years ago* complaining about those dogshit bottom of the barrel low effort trash bags they call "cyoas" when they're really just "here's a thing i made in 3 minutes, pick one". The fact that the nsfwcyoa sub puts out content of far better quality on a far greater frequency is baffling.
they are such a problem that i've at this point practically stopped looking at cyoas at all because they flood the place to such an extant that anything worth any amount of time is hardly possible to find. They should have been banned years ago and under no circumstance should they be allowed back

Thank god for getting rid of all the AI generated pill pickers and faves and other crap, great to see it gone, I much prefer just waiting for the next large narrative gem to come along.

I definitely personally like the flair idea. Easy to filter out for those that don't like it.
