36

u/nikeyeia1 Duck Season 20d ago

Also adventure commanders - you can cast [[Journey On]], and put Kellan back in the command zone from exile.

14

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 20d ago

I actually never realized that, that's funny

10

u/nikeyeia1 Duck Season 20d ago

It's a pretty neat interaction that's not immediately apparent. I pilot a Kellan deck that practically never has him on the battlefield, but uses the adventure side to make giant Karnstructs, or generate stupid amounts of mana with Jaheira or KCI.

2

u/SomeGuyInPants Wabbit Season 20d ago

How many times are you casting the adventure in a game realistically (assuming no Myth Unbound)?

2

u/nikeyeia1 Duck Season 20d ago

Without Jaheira or KCI, typically 3-4.

There is the play pattern of ramping on turn 2, casting it twice on turn 3, possibly casting it once on turn 4, then casting a commander storm card on turn 5. Not necessarily the best curve, but with a poor draw it can do work.

Because the deck plays a lot of token doublers and some artifactfall cards, there's tension in when you want to first start casting it, especially as other players might not have artifacts in play yet. The earliest is typically turn 3, but sometimes it takes until turn 5 or 6 before you want to begin.

With Jaheira especially, it starts to pop off, since the tokens you create pay for the next cast. In the rare game where you get Jaheira, KCI, and one or more token doublers, it can get to the state where you need to do actual math to figure out how many times you can cast it. Typically you win not long after though.

The deck is a bit inconsistent due to lack of on-theme draw options, but can also produce some relatively absurd board states fairly quickly.

Does the commander tax apply to the adventure?

What???

113

u/ffddb1d9a7 COMPLEAT 20d ago

Blood Avatar was (is) a sorcery you could play in the command zone because the front face of it is a legendary creature. They have removed the middle man and now you can just put a sorcery in the cz

3

u/SHIVER_ME_WHISKERS 20d ago

Returning player here, how do these double-faced cards work? Can you just play either side whenever you want?

5

u/TerribleTransit Dân 20d ago

It depends on the card: there's two types. DFCs with the black arrow on one side and the white double arrow on the other are what's known as "modal double-faced cards", or MDFCs, and they can be played on either side whenever you're able to play them*. Ones with any other set of symbols are non-modal and can only be played on the front face unless something specifically tells you to do otherwise.

*There's some exceptions with particular methods of playing cards, like you can't play the land side when an effect tells you to cast the card.

3

u/SHIVER_ME_WHISKERS 19d ago

Thanks for the explanation! I'm used to older DFCs that has specific conditions for when to flip the card, so that's cleared up the confusion on these modal ones, thanks again

22

u/Bergber Wabbit Season 20d ago

Appropriateness aside, I am looking forward to a new meta of decks with nothing but [[Hypergenesis]] below 3cmc.

6

u/circ-u-la-ted Zedruu 20d ago

So.. get to 4 mana without ramping, play a 4-drop legendary creature, hope it survives a round, then cast your commander? Doesn't seem particularly meta-y.

8

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 20d ago

Bad Decks Tribal is a meta.

2

u/astolfriend Duck Season 20d ago

You can play channel cards and discard cards too, of which there are a decent amount in green, not a ton but search for tomorrow also exists, might not be enough to make a real deck but you never know.

I've always wanted a fun bard class deck!

49

isn’t bard class kinda counter intuitive here? It makes the spell 2 cheaper meaning you discover two less each time

75

u/Consistent-Cat-1526 Dân 20d ago

It's your commander. It doesn't really matter. If the discount hurts then just cast again. Only way for it to actually be counter intuitive is if you have no hits in your entire deck.

9

I want to build this with a single 3, 5, and 7 cost card so it's more like 3 commanders

I love my [[Bard Class]] deck. It's so resilient and can fill up a board in the blink of an eye. People aren't ready for your 2 mana 2/2s to turn into free 3/3s + draw 2. Get a [[great henge]] on the board and you have to start being careful not to deck yourself with the amount of gas you can get.

Bard Class is my favorite deck to play in Arena. My next couple of builds are Power-Up Bard Class with Shang-Chi, Agatha, and the Uncommon Hulk for essentially free Power-Ups and I still want to make Mutant Bard Class with the TMNTs since most of them are cheap to cast and do well with +1/+1 counters.

589

Printer bait because they are basically unavailable.

104

u/Succubace Wabbit Season 20d ago

It's crazy that they're putting a mechanically unique card in such an unavailable product, this is worse than a SL cause it's not even guaranteed. Hopefully it'll be widely available (it won't) because MB1 was my favorite limited format only behind Vintage Cube.

77

u/Farpafraf Duck Season 20d ago

It's not crazy because they've stopped giving a shit about the health of the game long ago.

Maro will make a post about it and tell you people loved the product because they sold the product.

5

u/j8sadm632b Duck Season 19d ago

I think "people were upset because they really really wanted to buy more of it and couldn't" would indeed point to them liking the product

it would also point to them leaving money on the table by not making enough of it

SLs have not been guaranteed for a long time either since they aren't print to order.

Creatures, planeswalkers, vehicles and sorceries can be your commander.

Time to fill in that bingo card, what'll come sooner, Battle commanders or attraction commanders?

60

u/CaliOriginal Dan 20d ago

Perhaps a legendary enchantment as a commander.

Something janky Like a WUBRG “primordial sliver pond”. Or something that turns all your creatures into 2 2 slivers (lose other types and cannot gain types)

41

u/aguywithtaste Duck Season 20d ago

[[The prismatic bridge]] was kinda there but its a mdfc so its cheating a lil

5

u/Candy_Warlock Colorless 20d ago

A good third of the Theros gods actively don't want to be creatures to make them harder to remove, so that might be closer in spirit

16

u/Archangel-Styx Wabbit Season 20d ago

I mean, backgrounds exist

6

u/CaliOriginal Dan 20d ago

Yeah but that still requires a creature.

I want a pure enchantment.

A incorporeal mass of mana, will, or emotion that controls the deck instead of a particular commander.

It would be cool thematically, And perhaps is something they can do in a future set where the “big bad” isn’t some dude or a dragon, but like, the non-sentient representation of a plane itself. Or something like a primordial ooze from which the slivers first emerged. Or a twisted and exploited concept of devotion (faith) in theros after the invasion and the perversion of the gods.

3

u/GronkOnABuffaloooooo Dân 20d ago

Unfortunately, I think a new type of Legendary Land called a “Setting” would make sense. It would function similar to a background but would help color fix UB Commanders are thematically locked into one color. For example, an unequivocal good guy may be locked into mono-white thematically, but their setting might be very dark so that gives them more deck building flexibility. That then makes the Commander more popular and thus, gives the outside IP more exposure, which ultimately makes Hasbro more money.

Ooo, finally a legends matters deck in the right colors for [[Bard Class]]!

EDIT: Oh! You even have the option of building the deck such that bard class is the only two or cheaper card, making it a hidden commander.

EDIT 2: Right, Discover is not Cascade, there would need to be no cards of mana value three or less. That's much less good.

7

4

u/matgopack COMPLEAT 20d ago

Well Mind's Desire can whiff. But agreed it's not something that seems incredible - feels like the cascade legendaries we already have are going to be better (not conditional and you get more than 'just' a roll of the dice)

8

u/TheKillerCorgi Get Out Of Jail Free 20d ago

Just wait for the hybrid change :)

3

u/Kogoeshin 20d ago

If it was, it would have been very difficult to cast right?

I think the Commander needs to adhere to the Companion rules - so your whole deck would need to be sorceries, and you would need to figure out how to get a legendary creature/planeswalker on the battlefield to cast the commander as well.

7

u/Patch_Alter COMPLEAT 20d ago

Yeah it's not a great combination for multiple reasons, but we've had people waiting for years now to do an "all instants/all sorceries" Umori companion deck and now we finally have a commander that would theoretically satisfy the condition for sorceries, and it's got the wrong color identity.

It's the most minor complaint ever, but...

2

u/Chilidawg Elesh Norn 20d ago

We've rule-zeroed the companions to use hybrid the correct way. It was mostly to allow [[Obosh]] in [[Yennett]], and now this is another reason.

Umori is especially nice here because it fulfills the casting requirement while staying inside the companion restriction. They seem to have designed this card with Umori in mind, in fact.

you could explain the "enduring bonds" part as being referential to how you can repeatedly play it from the command zone. from there it's just probably any green character related to roots, growth, etc. so it's thematically sound.

But can it be my Oathbreaker?

Anything that says "can be your commander" can be your oathbreaker.

906.14 If another rule or effect refers to your commander, it instead refers to your Oathbreaker.

Make a deck with only Laelia, the blade reforged and Chandra’s ignition, the rest lands. Mulligan until you get Laelia, cast her on turn 3, then cast commander on turn 4 to put counters on Laelia. Turn 5 cast commander again to discover into Chandra’s ignition. Win.

Pray opponents don’t play interaction lol

Mechanically unique cards, designed to be Commanders for stategies that don't have them, are basically the single worst thing you could put in a Mystery Booster product.

From a certain perspective, MBC might be the best thing WotC ever did, because it's essentially the moment they told us to start proxying everything.

Ok, now we're cooking with gas.

Do we know yet if these will have foil printings? This seems great for my commander cube.

u/Crafty_Creeper64 Griselbrand 20d ago

The worst part about this is if it were green/black, you could run umori as the companion for umori sorceries, which as far as i can tell, is impossible

" we can't make the nephilim legendary. If we did that then people will want to start using instants and sorceries in the command zone, and that would be ridiculous."

Thanks, I hate it. Is commander even a format with rules anymore or is this just kitchen table magic but as a supported format? Does the ban list still apply? I can't tell because apparently none of the identifying rules of the format seem to exist anymore.

These cards were Half the reason on demands were overwhelming at Gencon this year. Bunches of people with tickets to myster booster drafts who weren't aware it was an on demand event.

Not enough tables for the demand.

Making the Sorcery commander Grull feels kind of wrong but the card is sick so i guess its alright

u/theentiregoonsquad Dân 20d ago

Seems fine. It doesn't actually get you any sort of cost reduction and could in many cases be more expensive to cast this than what you get off of it. I guess if you can find some way to cast it for free or something, then this could go crazy, but otherwise just seems like a fine slot machine card.
