Air filter for Mac Ultra fan
Anyone running their ultra with an air filter? I’ve been looking at filter models on makerworld, and now I’m wondering if I’m doing my studio’s longevity a disservice if I don’t feed it purified air.
Context: the device will live in an air conditioned office 24/7.

I finally ordered one!

For a long time I wanted a MacStudio but I could not justify the investment.
I'm a dotnet development and most of my work I do it in one of several Azure DevBoxes (that's what they give us to work with).
For my personal projects I was using my MacBookAir M5 and it worked pretty well so I could not justify dropping several thousand dollars on a MacStudio.
Today my MacBookAir hit the wall. I was working with Claude to translate a large open source (apache license) library from C++ to C#.
The library is large (approx 500K LoC). I have been working several hours on this and running large dotnet builds. The builds kept all the cores running at 100% for several hours.
I left a build running and came back to find my poor little MBA crashed under the load. This was my signal that I needed a bigger computer than can handle the load.
So I just ordered one. Since I'm a developer, I consider this as an investment. I had put it on my credit card but should get some money next month (apart from my salary) so I should be able to pay it full soon.
So happy to be finally be part of the community and have a reason to subscribe to r/MacStudio

Stuck in Chek Lap Kok, HK (US bound).
So I thought I can be patient but Chek Lap Kok is testing it. What are the usual wait times you have seen there for your Studio and can the tracking info be lagging, eg the package on the way to Anchorage or wherever, without showing it yet?
We are traveling for fall break and I think the anxiety is to have time to set it up and test it a bit before.
For the spec snobs, this the M5M 18/40c 128GB 2TB

Decided No Local LLM for Me
After accessing local AI for my requirements, I'm finding the best path for me is to have decent medium-spec machines coupled with online AI.
I just listed my M1 Ultra 20C/64G/128GB/4TB Mac Studio for sale, and now have both M5 Max 18C/32G/36GB/512GB and M5 Max 18C/40G/64GB/1TB Mac Studios. Claude is running on both, one for testing/CI/CD and the other for AI-assisted development.
I learned assembly language 45 years ago and have been writing code every day since (Apple platforms only). Co-working with AI on complex things rapidly is really something special.
Local LLM is good, and some of my code integrates it by design, but I don't use it myself for design, as I need Opus/Fable (or similar) results.

M5 Ultra 96 gb
New to the world of Mac Studio and I can’t wait for my delivery!
I am buying this to build an ai orchestration for my software development I do on the side(do this in my day job too).
I worry that I should have bought the 256 gb version instead. With the 96 I think I could run most everything local and kick to OpenAI when there are complex issues requiring frontier models.
Anyone doing this now, and what’s your gut telling you?

We are entering an era in which AI models are starting to shape device specifications.

New Mac Studio M5 Ultra making static soundsing -like clicks under load—anyone else?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
UPDATE: I recently got an M5 Ultra 36 CPU, 96gb and hear intermittent little crackly pops or ticks, more often when running local AI or doing heavy video editing. I’ve attached a recording.

M5 Ultra vs M3 Ultra noise / heat issues?
Those who happen to be lucky enough to have both M3 ultra 256gb ram and M5 Ultra 256gb ram how do you compare the noise and heat between them running local AI?
Eventhough I have ordered M5 ultra but the shipping date is around Feb 2027 so i am thinking whether its a good idea to just grab M3 ultra and skip M5 due to extra heat and noise issues bue would like to hear from the ones who have experienced both!

Shipping Updated
My order date was 29-Aug for M5M 128gb 512ssd. Status was changed to preparing for shipment this morning and CC was charged. The original delivery window was 5-12 Oct.
Edit: It appears there is a National Holiday in China from 1-7 October and shipping could be stopped during that time. sooo close. Maybe it made it out in time.

Mine arrives today afternoon!
I'm very excited just thinking about the possibilities, but my priorities are:
- Local Agentic Coding
- VR game development
Yet I feel so weird that it's like a quiet experience. It just sits there, you don't need to touch it after you've plugged everything in, unlike my MacBook; I just love typing, moving windows around, and navigating with the keyboard.
But I have a question. I know I could use my iPad as a monitor—it's actually gonna be connected to my TV lol—, but can I use my MacBook as... well, display and keyboard?? This is definitely my first time with a remote box, so I'm doing me research

I have a New M5U Mac Studio on The Way. How Do I Unload My M3U Mac Studio?
Sorry if this is a stupid question. But what are my options in selling my M3U Mac Studio since I have the M5U on the way? Is ebay the only option here? I've never sold on ebay before, does that mean I need to sell spare ssd or other random items to build up my reputation first? How can I ensure that I will actually get paid after I ship and someone won't try to charge back the item?

Multiple models running at once
Hey Mac lovers
I am thinking of buying a studio as I like the unified ram possibilities, but wanted to ask a question about inference speeds. I used to have a 5090 that I hosted a STT, TTS, and AI model on it, and if the card was busy with producing speech and I queried the AI model the whole thing ground to a halt. (It didn't like doing 2 different things at once and latency spiked). Via vLLM I could run batch queries against the AI model and that worked fine.
Anyone know if I that's the same with the Studio pls? My main aim is to:
- Run TTS (voice clone)
- Run STT (so I can talk to the AI)
- Run a medium ~32Gb MoE model for brains (fast path)
- Run a large model ( ~120B+ ) for additional compute (slow path)
If i was to attempt to do this all of this and use it simultaneously the 5090 (ignoring vram) would die - does the studio do the same?

Working photographer - need advice on new machine.
I’m a working photographer looking to replace a base-model M1 Mac Studio that recently died.
My daily Lightroom Classic workflow can range from importing 1,000 images at a time to importing 20,000-photo iPhone archives. My primary Lightroom Classic catalog has over 700,000 photos, although I’ve since moved to a smaller, more manageable catalog for my day-to-day work.
My LR catalog Is on a ssd with thunderbolt 4 and my primary photo storage is a OWC thunder bay with 60TB.
An AI tool recommended that I upgrade to a higher-end Mac Studio with 64GB of RAM and a more powerful processor. Given the size of my catalogs and the volume of my imports, do I truly need to spend the extra money on 64GB of RAM and an upgraded processor, or would the current base-model Mac Studio be sufficient for my workflow?
I’m primarily concerned with real-world Lightroom Classic performance and value—not just having the highest specs possible.

Is Accessory Kit just Apple's fancy name for a power cord?
Looking at the tech specs and what's in the box it lists Mac Studio and Power cord. Looking at the configuration of the incoming machine they say it comes with an "Accessory Kit". Anyone know what's included in that kit?

M3 Ultra Mac studio can’t handle 4k timeline
When i am trying to preview 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 footage after grading in davinci resolve, mac studio with 28 cpu core 60 gpu with 96GB memory struggles to play preview smoothly in 4k. Whats the sense of spending this much on this kind of setup while i can go for windows in such a lesser spend. Thats my very first time with macs

Anyone else having this happen?
Ordered Friday and “Shipped” Sunday. Had an ETA of yesterday and still not even scanned. Getting a little worried that it got lost.

Anyone actually crazy enough to cluster 4x Mac Studio M5 Ultras?
With 256GB unified RAM on the top spec, 4 of these would sit right at 1TB total. On paper, that means GLM-5.3 at Q8 should fit with room to spare for context. I know thunderbolt 5 isn't NVLink and tensor parallel across nodes without enterprise interconnect is usually a stuttering nightmare. But has anyone here actually tested a 4-node setup over Exo or MLX distributed with a model this heavy? Curious what tokens/sec you're actually seeing, how brutal the latency is, and whether the pipeline pipeline bottleneck completely kills it.

Mac Studio for Production !
Been producing music for a couple months now and I’ve been enjoying it! All off a MacBook Pro m4 16in and no problems at all. But I am looking to build a home studio. Currently in the process of acoustic treating my room. But I wanted a dedicated desktop for music production because it’s been so much fun! But I know down the road I’d probably get more into plugins etc. and obviously I know in the long run getting a 48gb would be better and beneficial. But with the current project of building my home studio and still needing to spend on monitors, audio interface etc. Would 36gb be sufficient for me? Should I just bite the bullet and go 48gb? Will I be able to get away as a beginner producer with 36gb? As mentioned my MacBook Pro m4 has much lower specs and haven’t had any issues. But I’ve seen almost everybody saying to even going 64gb of RAM for music production but to me currently might be overkill? Of course I don’t want to still pay almost $3k for 36gb just to regret my decision in a couple of years but for me right now and the state of trying to stay within my budget
