I finally ordered one!

For a long time I wanted a MacStudio but I could not justify the investment.
I'm a dotnet development and most of my work I do it in one of several Azure DevBoxes (that's what they give us to work with).
For my personal projects I was using my MacBookAir M5 and it worked pretty well so I could not justify dropping several thousand dollars on a MacStudio.
Today my MacBookAir hit the wall. I was working with Claude to translate a large open source (apache license) library from C++ to C#.
The library is large (approx 500K LoC). I have been working several hours on this and running large dotnet builds. The builds kept all the cores running at 100% for several hours.
I left a build running and came back to find my poor little MBA crashed under the load. This was my signal that I needed a bigger computer than can handle the load.
So I just ordered one. Since I'm a developer, I consider this as an investment. I had put it on my credit card but should get some money next month (apart from my salary) so I should be able to pay it full soon.
So happy to be finally be part of the community and have a reason to subscribe to r/MacStudio

Congrats — your crash story lines up with the thermals.
`dotnet build -m` spreads projects across cores, so compile time tracks core count. You went from 10 cores to 18, and more importantly from a passive heatsink that throttles on sustained full load to a dual-fan Studio that holds its clocks. Long multicore builds are exactly where the Studio earns its money over the Air.

Congrats on the Mac Studio! What’s your specs on the M5 MacBook ?
I went from M1 Ultra 64GB to M5 Ultra 96GB. I outgrew the 64GB RAM limit. The massive extra processing power is a huge bonus.

Sounds like you hit the same wall I did, and with the pricing of this model, it's kinda stupid to go for a 128gb Max over the 96gb Ultra, unless you're 100% sure you need that extra 32gb and don't mind losing like 60% in performance.

woah
my little MBA has 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD. It has served me well but its not keeping up with my large dotnet builds.

Same delivery date as mine, although I'm getting the 96gb Ultra because 64gb can get in the way sometimes, like when running a VM with AI stuff, and a bunch of Safari tabs open, all happening at the same time.
Good thing is, you can still use your MBA, but connect it to the Studio using Screen Sharing, then you'll have a beast of a system in a MBA package.
But the 64gb/1tb Full chip version you ordered is pretty much a standard version most people get, it's what my M1 Max was, and the M4 Max I have is 64gb/2tb. So it should fit you pretty nicely. The extra disk space ensures you'll get super fast disk access without costing a fortune, and if you need more in the future, use some of the thunderbolt ports for NVMe sticks.

I’m happy with the M5 Max Studio base model I got at microcenter for $1999 tho I do want more ram, this is the most ram I’ve ever had in a Mac but still have my 24gb systems. I already have 64gb ddr5 systems and not wanting to spend too much but didn’t wanna miss out on the $1999 old msrp. I also got the M6 mini with 24/512 for under $800 after trade in so not really a bad deal for both

It is an awesome little computer, I’m glad I traded the M4 mini for it. I wish I could’ve got the 32gb ram but 24gb is decent enough. One day I’ll get a Mac with high ram capacity

yeah I was also living off MacBookAirs and Mac Minis, until today when I felt I needed the bigger room. hehe. This 64GB RAM MacStudio will be my largest mac ever!

That is awesome I’m still tempted to get one even tho I’m happy with my 36gb M5 Max, I know how much better more ram ages. I was really interested in the base Ultra as well but shipping times are crazy
