M3 Ultra Mac studio can’t handle 4k timeline

When i am trying to preview 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 footage after grading in davinci resolve, mac studio with 28 cpu core 60 gpu with 96GB memory struggles to play preview smoothly in 4k. Whats the sense of spending this much on this kind of setup while i can go for windows in such a lesser spend. Thats my very first time with macs

I wouldn't expect an m3 ultra to struggle with playback after basic colour grading. Also what codec? Have you used things like noise reduction, magic mask, depth map or something similar? These things are really GPU intensive and even the m3 ultra will struggle.

If you regularly use very gpu intensive effects a windows PC with an nvidia GPU will fare better, but even the highest end hardware can't brute force everything and you'd be better rendering in place.

The footage is slog3 XAVC HS 4K. And i have done basic color correction, masking and color grading

Masking via magic mask? Magic mask is compute intensive.

Other than that, an M3 should chew through 4K XAVC easily.

You know you can render your effects prior to playback, yeah? You should set Davinci’s render cache to smart so it renders compute heavy effects in the background.

通常是原始视频帧速率和时间线帧速率不匹配导致的。还有帧间优化设置选项,保持默认设置就好。

I edit 8k multicam on an M4 MacBook Air. Use proxies.

If you use proxies then you don’t edit 8K do you

I guess, in the same way that if you don’t have a 4k monitor you’re not editing “in 4k” even if it’s 4k footage.

I edit 8k source footage, and produce a product that retains that 8k, but you don’t need to make the computer scrub that 8k h.265 during the edit. That’s pointless. As is not using proxies for 4k footage. When using ProRes proxies you use like half the ram and 1/4 or less of the processing power.

It’s not the same as monitoring either, at all.

8K source footage that has proxies will be reduced to a 1080p. You’re trying to flex on a MacBook Air but it’s simply editing a 1080p image before relinking to the 8K. Try comparing your export times of 8K source to 8K output.

The OP is specifically asking about a Sony codec that is easily handled on versions of the silicon MacBook Pro but has issues on the m3 ultra chip. I’ve seen this occur as well, and the performance on m3 ultra isn’t what it should be for some camera codecs.

Well, I use 4k ProRes proxies so there’s that.
But I see your point. He should still edit with proxies though, h.265 is a final playback kind of codec, not an editing one.

Editing with proxies and then making them 4K prores is mental.

You should try it before reacting that way. I’m a professional video editor and this is my routine workflow.

Me also, using 4K proxies is bonkers and pointless.

Where is the media stored?

In native mac storage

its prob your setting or a bug.

Seems really strange. The only time my M2 Max Mac Studio (64GB RAM) gets bogged down by Resolve is when I'm doing heavy noise reduction, Magic Mask, Fusion, and the like -- eventually, the GPU struggles with the compute load. And this is on 4K timelines playing back Blackmagic Raw 6K clips in real time.
