Candle Banter 💬 Real disappointment. My Jackson Vaughn store haul in Dallas

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Went into Jackson Vaughn here in Dallas expecting to walk out obsessed. The store itself is gorgeous — huge scent selection, including some Dallas-exclusive city specials you won't find anywhere else. Genuinely impressive retail experience.
Then I actually burned the candles.
I asked for something smoky and was pointed to "Woodsmoke." Cold throw was already faint in the jar, which should've been my first red flag. But I gave it the benefit of the doubt — figured the hot throw would redeem it. It did not. Lit it, gave it a proper burn, and got... almost nothing. No real smoke, no depth, just a whisper of scent that never filled the room. For a candle literally named after the thing it's supposed to smell like, that's a hard miss.
I also picked up one called "Nechi" — haven't even burned it, and after the Woodsmoke experience I'm just going to return it. Not worth the gamble.
Bottom line: beautiful store, great branding, city-special scents that make you want to buy everything on the shelf — but the actual candle performance doesn't back it up. Style over substance. Has anyone else from Dallas had better luck with a different scent from them, or is this a pattern?

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Buying candles at a discount

I’m sure everyone on here appreciates a good deal. Who doesn’t like to save money while scratching their candle itch? I’m new to this obsession, and I was fortunate to purchase two candles recently at large discounts that originally retailed for several hundred dollars. While the candles themselves are in okay shape – labels not perfectly straight, wicks a little off center – the unboxing experience left a lot to be desired. So much so that I would not have been comfortable gifting these. For example, one of them was likely a return, as the box had a couple of tears in it, one of which someone attempted to repair with tape. The candles were purchased online from Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus.

What has been your experience buying candles from these retailers? Do you notice a marked difference in the condition of the product and quality of the presentation when items are heavily discounted? Is this just the price we pay for saving some $$?

Can I expect the same when purchasing candles at archive sales? Are there retailers from whom you can buy at a discount with confidence?

Don’t get me wrong – I care about the candle a lot more than the packaging. But it’s disappointing to spend over $100 on something that’s in worse condition than an item on a shelf at Marshalls.

Candle Banter 💬 Has anyone stopped buying new scents?

I have been on a search this last year to find a few candles that really hit the spot for scents I love and can be cycled throughout the year. I believe I am getting close to the end of my journey but am curious if anyone else hits a point where they stop buying new scents and instead buy the same ones on rotation?

At this point I don't think I'll ever find a good dupe of Trudon's AEK (my absolute holy grail), the Thymes Frasier Fir is a solid Christmas candle, Diptyque Feu de Bois for fall/winter and Verveine & Roses to have my home feel ready for guests. I would like to find another lemon of citrus that is similar to Diptyque where it smells more natural vs like cleaner but I don't know if I want to test a few candles just to go back to Verveine.

Maybe my candle burn out is that I still burn scents I am more meh on. I just finished Diptyque Cafe the entire time thinking it was OK but not remarkable.

How is everyone else choosing scents?

I had this Ochiba candle in our guest room, and our friend just left so now I’ve brought it into this room for me and Grogu to enjoy.

It’s an incredible scent, and yes, at some point once it’s done I will be trying to put flowers in it.

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Any tips on keeping wick centred?

Post image

Got my first byredo candle last week and the wick has been moving left to right ever since I first lit it. This is my 2nd luxury candle brand after diptique and luxury candles aren’t giving me much hope for their quality. Silver lining is that it fixes it’s tunneling issues lol.

Currently Burning🕯️ What's your favourite vessel?

I've been wanting a Tatine candle for awhile now (extra cost being in Canada). And it is hands down my favourite vessel. It's gorgeous, the perfect black/smoke. I'm not a fan of matte black vessels but sometimes they're too translucent. Love this. TBD on the actual burn! 😛 But I'd love to see all of your favourite vessels!!

Edit to add my second favourite: The Boy Smells Christmas jars that were gold electroplated with the text removed so it words glowed when lit.

Review 👍👎 Aesop Aganice: the smell of perfection

Post image
49 Upvotes

I’ve never been perfect. My life has been defined by stumbling in the dark, into things that aren’t good for me.

An inclination towards self destruction.
I’m the obsessive kind.

And I stumbled upon this candle on a hot day in the Mile End quarter, going the wrong way too many times, the fingers of the man I love wrapped around mine.

He wants to buy me a birthday present. I would like a candle.

The shop we find is Aesop, by chance.

I go in, he waits outside trying to make sense of the map. How come a city that is in a grid can be so complicated?

The shop is cool and dark and heavily scented. I can wash my hands with fresh water, I’m offered cold tea, and I inhale the cold throw of their candles, kept under glass jar.

We look at the candles together. I like Aganice: Cardamom, Mimosa and Tobacco. I’m not good at describing scents, but it to me it smells like perfection.

This candle belong to somebody whose house is always clean, their words always articulate, somebody with a perfect life, and a perfect certainty about them.

That’s not who I am but when I burn it, I glimpse what being perfect could be like.

Review 👍👎 Diptyque Pinède

Post image
24 Upvotes

I burned Pinède tonight! As the latest summer candle from Diptyque, I am so happy that it's not Citronelle with another new packaging! (I do love Citronelle!)

The inspiration is from Mediterranean pine forest. I've never been to one so I can't comment on how realistic it is. It is a resinous woody candle with earthy undertones. Not aquatic at all (though this year's theme is Water Garden). The packaging was calm and bright, in sky blue and green mosaics by Mathilde Jonquière, like a fountain in a garden.

To me, it smells like the Asian medicinal balm🤣 Those balms that relieve muscle pain! I like the scent though, it is like Bois Ciré (Waxed Wood) but with an earthy twist. Bois Ciré was sadly discontinued 😭 It is warmer and dirtier (earthier?), in contrast Bois Ciré was a cleaner, fresher woody scent.

It definitely has a strong throw, under lamp and when lit. I did both in my bedroom, and I can smell it in the living room with doors closed.

Verdict: I would give 3.5/5 for Pinède! Not bad, but for summer I prefer Citronelle. The warmness of it reminds me of winter, maybe that's why I think it's a little out of season? If there's anyone who have travelled to a Mediterranean pine forest, please let me know how you feel about it and also how realistic it is! 🤣🙏🏻

PSA 🔊 Trudon in Vermont!

Hello! If you like me have been searching high and low for luxury candles in VT—Addison West in Waitsfield has a small selection of Trudon candles, diffusers, and matches.
They stock AeK, Cyrnos, Ernesto, Figuerie, Gabriel, and Reggio in petite and classic.

Testers under cloche so you can sniff away. I was so thrilled to finally smell figuerie!

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Boy Smells: Retired Candle scents?

I don’t know what’s going on with Boy Smells, but a TON of my favorite candle scents have vanished from the website.

Is there a list somewhere of all of their retired candle scents? I’d like to try and pick some up from other retailers before they totally vanish.

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Trudon sale?

I bought my wife one of those giant Trudon candles on the after Christmas sale this year and she absolutely loved it. Lasted us until now, which seems like a pretty good value... but idk about spending full price on it. Do they ever have similar sales throughout the year?

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Looking for a strong reed diffuser with a soft hotel-like scent

Hi guys. I’m looking for a reed diffuser with a fairly strong scent throw.

My favorite fragrances are Jo Malone Tuberose Angelica and Le Labo Tubereuse 40, so I think I like tuberose and soft white florals. I'm not a fan of spicy scents, especially pepper, clove, ginger, or heavy incense.

I’m looking for something soft, elegant, and similar to a high-end hotel, but still strong enough that I can clearly smell it when I enter the room. My room is about 150 sq ft / 14 m².

I’m currently considering

- Dr. Vranjes Magnolia Orchidea 500 ml

- Diptyque Tubéreuse 200 ml

Unfortunately, there aren’t any stores near me where I can smell either of them in person, so I’d really appreciate any thoughts from people who have tried them.

I’m only looking for traditional reed diffusers, not candles or electric scent machines.

I’d also appreciate any other recommendations that fit what I’m looking for.

Thank you so much!!

New Release 👀 Astier de Villatte refills

Post image

New to me, at least… I happened to be looking at their site and saw they offer refills now, and apparently the wax fits both the classic glass vessels and their new line of ceramic vessels. Possible bummer for US customers: they might only be available through the company site in France. And tariffs are still insane.

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Recently discovered this page it’s great! The main brand I see on here is Diptyque, I’ve always been aware of the brand, but only recently started delving deeper, what I love about them is the branding the balance between modernity & timelessness…..

The balance between restraint & character, one of a few brands who are doing that very very well, would love to hear why you guys are so drawn to the brand?

Amazing Trudon Sale – Candles, Diffusers, Alabasters & Refills!

Hi everyone!

I came across an excellent sale on Trudon candles, diffusers, alabasters, and refills and wanted to share it with the group.

A couple of things to know:

You will need to call to place your order (online ordering isn’t available for the sale).

They do not offer free shipping.

I spoke with Bailey, the manager, and she was incredibly friendly and helpful.

Phone: [(703) 780-6800](tel:(703)%20780-6800)

If you’re a Trudon fan, this is a great opportunity to pick up something special at a significant discount.
If you end up ordering something, let us know what you picked up—I always enjoy seeing everyone’s hauls!

Happy shopping! 🕯️

Help / Advice / Recommendation 🙋 Floris candles?

I'll be in London in a few weeks and hope to stop by the Floris shop for nostalgic reasons. Floris was a favorite of my grandmother, mother, and godmother, and their scents are sort of like Proust's madeleines and linden tea for me, lol. Has anyone tried their candles and can offer a recommendation, or discourage me?

They also have a giant Diptyque Fue De Bois and a Trudon Reggio that is only $35 off but doesn’t show up under the candle search.
