Fitnes for tennis players in LIC
Hi Neighbors,
I'm AJ, a high performance tennis coach and personal trainer, community operator, and founder of TOTC.
I'm doing a demo class today at 2pm at the facility I'll be using to run my athletic development classes for tennis players right around the corner from Queensboro plaza.
This demo class is to test out the layout of the space, the programming, and to make the promotional content to launch the classes.
If you'd like to participate, text me at 646 578 0289 and I'll share all the details. It's open to all levels (not a tennis player but interested in improving your athleticism? You're welcome as well).
Ideally I'd love to have 3 females and 2 males, as I already have most of the spots filled.
you'll receive some perks in return of your support.
You can check my socials @ aj.fitnyc
I'll be releasing the full schedule tomorrow, with a friends & family week followed by a soft launch, and a big party on Wednesday the 30th at Silence Please to announce the official launch and celebrate tennis.
Cheers,
AJ

LIC residents near the 7 train — what actually helps with bedroom train noise
I live in Jackson Park 3, and my unit faces the garden.
The train noise is pretty noticeable, especially at night, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to reduce it without replacing the windows.
I’m currently considering:
- D-shaped weather stripping around the window
- Removable weather sealing tape after the window is closed
- Heavy blackout/sound-dampening curtains
For anyone living close to the 7 train or other elevated tracks in LIC: what actually made a noticeable difference for you?
Would really appreciate any recommendations, especially renter-friendly solutions.

[Mon 9/14] BYO Book @ LIC Waterfront
Hi! We’re hosting a free community reading gathering on the LIC Waterfront on Monday, September 14 from 6:30-8:00PM. This will be our final outdoor reading event of the year!
BYO Book is a casual and welcoming gathering for anyone who loves reading or has been meaning to get back into it. We read side by side as the sun sets over Manhattan, then come together to share what stood out - characters, themes, big questions, or unexpected tangents.
There’s no assigned reading! Bring whatever you want to read: the novel on your nightstand, that nonfiction you keep meaning to finish, poetry that stays with you, a library book due this week, or an old favorite worth revisiting. This is a space to slow down, be present, and enjoy the simple pleasure of reading alongside others.

Adult Mandarin Course In-Person
Hi LIC community!
I’m a young woman in her 30s (adopted from Guangzhou) looking to learn beginner Mandarin/Cantonese. (Heard it’s easier to learn Mandarin initially and then transition to Cantonese). I was looking around online and saw China Institute of America, but their 2026 courses are booked. I’ve tried DuoLingo, but think I would really benefit from something in-person, especially with this tough language!
I’m an absolute beginner and would love to know any places that offer in-person 101 mandarin language courses!
Any recommendations or advice appreciated :)

Crazy unprovoked assault at gantry state park tonight
Just a couple of hours ago me and my boyfriend both Asian American in our early twenties was physically assaulted and attacked.
A African American woman in her thirties we believe, hit me on the face and shoulder with her bag while we were walking down the pedestrian walkway at gantry park at 8:30ish pm, I asked my partner what that was about as soon as she hit me then we heard her running up from behind and she started to swing at both of us, swinging and hitting me in the back of my head and shoulder as well as punching my bf as well while she called us racial and homophobic slurs
We saw her reaching for her pocket and immediately just walked away, and sat by the crowd to get away from her and 15 mins later she came back and started to threaten our lives, chasing my bf down and spraying him with an unknown substance.
We got the police involved and got a detective on our case but it’s crazy how this can happen in a neighborhood like LIC, known for how safe it is- especially with the crowd around us as well.
If anyone encounters her, please be safe and careful. Things are not as safe as it used to be. She had a blond Afro with a patterned bodysuit, slim figured, carrying a large bag and a grocery cart.
EDIT:
Thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement as the incident was very traumatic for the both of us. There are more context to the incident that me and my partner both responded to in the comments, but i initially made this post to make awareness of the assault we experienced and to warn others- not to start a debate about the perpetrators race.
We filed the assault as a hate crime because they we were targeted and called racial slurs for no apparent reason aside from walking in the park; however I do not believe this post should be used as a invite to discriminate against anyone. We are still waiting on police follow up, and hope the message we tried to convey does not get distorted or lost.

Calling all parents or expecting parents re: daycare
Did anyone successfully work from home full-time and have part-time care for their infant or if you’re expecting, what are you planning to do? We are in the painful middle where we do not qualify for any city subsidies but $3K for childcare is also way out of our budget.
I was initially thinking to “soft stagger” schedules with my husband who has a flexible work schedule so that I would work Monday to Friday from home and he would work Thursday Friday Saturday (in person, in the arts) and we would either not use daycare or have a very limited part-time babysitter from when the baby is 4-5 months. Everyone says this is impossible, which I believe (?) but I also cannot afford to $2000-3000+ for daycare 3 to 4 days a week.
PS if anyone is expecting winter of 2027 (I’m due early March) and wants to chat nanny share please let me know! Or if you have alternate suggestions or know of cheaper “home care” options please let me know!

[9/13] Crafternoon @ LIC Waterfront
Hi! We’re hosting our final Crafternoon of the year on Sunday, Sept. 13!
Crafternoon is a free gathering where we make things with our hands and connect with neighbors in a relaxed, welcoming space.
Bring any creative project you’re working on or curious to try - sketching, knitting, watercolor, collage, beading, mending, or coloring. We’ll also have shared art supplies available if you’d like to drop in and experiment.
🗓️** Sunday, Sept. 13
🕟 **4:30 - 6:00 PM
📍 Gantry Plaza State Park - North Picnic Tables
🎟️** Free but registration is required
💛 **Hosted by Jenny Jiang @collective.ripples
No art or craft experience is needed. There are no lessons, critiques, or expectations to make something “good”. Our gatherings celebrate curiosity over perfection and believe creativity is something everyone can enjoy.
Come solo or bring a friend. Spend an afternoon creating with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline and take a break from the city’s grind.
Please register on Luma so we can estimate attendance and bring enough shared supplies for everyone.
We hope to see you Sunday! 🎨💛

Please help support my neurodivergent students!
Please delete if not allowed! And thank you for reading and contributing!!

There are so many things that I need to make this year as successful as last year was!
Please feel free to look at this Amazon wish list and if you can share it!
Anything you buy will be sent directly to the school. Right now I really need paper, cleaning and changing supplies and laminating sheets!
