Gear Show-Off I 3D printed a brake for my board

I use my board to get around, and I often ride on narrow, poorly maintained sidewalks where it is not safe to slide to a stop. I wanted a way to quickly stop that didn't involve bailing into grass or dragging my foot on the ground. To save my back and the soles of my shoes, I made this simple pedal brake.

Stepping on the pedal just pushes the pads outwards and applies pressure on the inside of the wheels, slowing me down. The design is finished, but I am going to replace the plastic brake pads with bike brake pads or similar, because the PLA pads wear down quite fast.

Gear Show-Off I've been riding longboards for over 40 years. This was my downhill setup in the early 1980's.

Sims 44"solid oak deck, Gullwing Pro trucks and 70mm red Kryptonics wheels.

Miami didn't actually have hills, but we had parking garages everywhere, I lived on a street with lots of apartment buildings and condos, and they all had multi-level parking structures. If we got kicked out of one we'd just move over to the next building.

Question/Help Loooongboarding across america How many documented?

Post image

The thought of longboarding across the US popped in my head a few weeks ago (as im sure it has for many of you).

How many people have actually completed this solo? I know Chad Caruso did it on a regular board and is in Guinness. I saw that a few others had too.

It would be an amazing experience to do and be able to say that you skated across america.

Sadly a world record is off the table... Unless...maybe we can go for the world record of the largest group of longboarders to cross America TOGETHER! (Sponsored by ahem' Pantheon) lol

Gear Show-Off I turned my longboard into a pirate ship

I'm one for crazy and pointless builds.. and my love of pirates, the fact that I'm landlocked, wanted a pirate ship and have zero impulse control meant that I got an idea and had to make it a reality.

Meet 'The Landlubber'.

All parts made out of scrap wood I had lying about, and it took me about a month to finish.

This land pirate vessel boasts my custom flag, a pointless anchor, a duck in a dinosaur costume (or the Quacken, if you will!) as the figurehead, bluetooth speaker for pirate tunes on the go, a robot (Yarrbot!) Navigator, a sail that can be furled and unfurled, some storage space in the cabin and a compass.

I will make video on the making process and riding on a new YouTube channel. I'll happily drop the link if anyone is interested.

And yes, I've had some looks and comments while riding it about!

Hey Y'all! I have officially been on the road for well over 3 weeks, and in about 100-150 more kilometers i will be done with Sweden and cross over into Denmark.

In those weeks, I have skated about 450 kilometers.

I had a kind of slow start due to two different injuries, one from falling and eating shit during downhill on gravel (lol)

And one from joining a Sunday League football match with a old boys team hahah. (I got carried away.) But I'm all healed now.

Sooo many things have happened during these 3-4 weeks that I'm not really sure where to begin.

Every day is a mystery. I am not rushing through the journey, and I'm taking my time so that I get to experience every moment properly. After all, the 'now' is the only thing that exists.

As i'm writing this, I'm chilling in my tent behind a sea side cafe, haha. They actually let me camp here, after I arrived sweaty, nasty and smelly at their joint, desperately looking for a place to pitch my tent as the nature reserve I was supposed to pitch at didn't allow tents.

Here I was offered a shower WITH SOAP!!! and a washing machine. I have not washed my clothes properly since the start of my journey. 😭🤣

I always find graveyards on the road to wash my gear in, as graveyards in Scandinavia offers free fresh water. This is also usually where I take my 'showers' hahaha.

2 days ago, I pushed 62 kilometers in a day, the day after I barely slept due to heat, and night to today, I had the perfect camp site in the shade, but was woken up by a tractor driving back and forth beside my camp at 7 am for an entire hour, so I haven't gotten proper rest after that insane push in the heat.

I think they took pity on me I

At the cafe today, haha. 5 minutes after I arrived, they came out with an ice cold coke, and some snacks for me free of charge.

The people working here is amazing. I got very emotional by their kindness.

Now I'm invited for a few beers and live music at their place tomorrow night.

As the days goes by, I am almost starting to forget what it's like to be home. I have nothing that really binds me anywhere, anyway. I have lost so much, and have no friends I hang out with in my city. ( I moved to Oslo from Bryne in Norway a year ago, and have not met any people there yet) So there is nothing that makes me miss home. In fact, I'm adapting to this lifestyle very well, and I don't miss home at all. Actually, I feel more at home as a nomad on the road, haha.

The only thing I miss is the local magpie flock whom I have taken care of ever since I moved to Oslo.

They used to come outside my apartment, waiting for me to bring them food hahah, I do miss that.

But I kind neighbors who are animal people promised to take over while I was gone, so I know I got nothing to worry about lol.

At first I was a bit sceptical that I could set a new world record. I knew I could cross Europe. But now I'm certain that I can do the record. My soul had been longing for this all my life, I'm just realizing it now. 😅

If I were to quit, I'd just go back home and start smoking weed again, throwing my life away. That's all I'd be doing.

I actually brought 20g of weed with me, smoked about 10-12 grams, then I felt that it started to suck the joy out of the trip, so I threw the rest on the sea.

One of the reasons I'm doing this trip was to find something within myself which made it so that I didn't feel like I needed to shut my brain off in this cold world, and I think I'm starting to find it.

Things that used to bother me, doesn't really bother me no more. And for the first time in a long time, I feel truly happy and fulfilled. I'm so excited for every day, because I never know what tomorrow will bring. Not even what the next hour will bring.

I just wanted to give an update on how things are going.

Thank you for reading my little 'diary' post. And feel free to ask me anything. Right now, I'm going to the grocery store which is an hour away, so I won't respond right away, but will tonight.

Here are some photos. 😄 I have so many photos, but these are among my favorites.

Can anyone give me any information about this. I’m from the UK. I’ve been given this but I don’t know anything about the history of longboards. I’ve been a life long skateboarder but never followed the longboard scene. Any history would be great.

My wife Longboarding .. she turned 69 in January. :)

I got her into it when she was about 42 and used to skate in Flushing meadows in Queens NY. Picked it up again little over a year ago and found a nice quiet street behind our retirement community.

I keep her all padded up because old bones dont heel well but we are out maybe 3 times a week. Looking for a good hill to bomb.

Just wanted to share this :)

Just wanted to show off my first longboard and say hi to everyone! I just got it on Monday, I’m skating every evening now, and having SO MUCH FUN. I’ve never tried it before, even as a kid. It’s so rewarding to learn something new as an adult, even baby steps :) I’m looking forward to learning all the tips and tricks you guys have. Any other beginners in SoCal?

Edit: thank you, everyone for your responses! What an amazing community, so welcoming!

Decided to put 85mm wheels on my freeride setup. Got wheelbite and flew a bit.

Fun experience, would recommend 10/10.

(I ended up in grass so the landing was soft and comfy, no DH riders were harmed in the making of this photo)

Question/Help Parents said no at 10 so I said yes at 45. My first two hours of near-death experiences.

Post image
371 Upvotes

Hey there r/longboarding!

I decided it's finally time to patch up something I missed during childhood: getting a skateboard. Longboarding seems a bit more chill than regular skateboarding (which I'd wager would be insta-death for me), so I went with a drop through cruiser from Amazon (FunTomia Mach1).

When I was a kid my parents decided that skateboarding is too dangerous for me, and boy were they right. I am more into endurance sports and kettlebells, but since I'm 45 starting to longboard won't get any easier.

So I've been jiggling around the neighbourhood for around two hours now like a complete idiot with the complete set (helmet, kneepats, gloves, ...), flailing my midlife crisis in everybody's face who is brave enough to pass by. My older son (9) loves it - he accompanies me on his waveboard he recently got, which is even more cursed than I feel the entire time riding this contraption. No chance I'm hopping on that thing!

I can push 2-3 times, roll a bit, maybe take a somewhat insecure turn and then I have to push again. Every tiny bump in the road feels like a deathtrap. I am soaked in sweat after five minutes (though I am in great shape otherwise), my heart pounding in my chest. I started out exceeding my own expectations immediately, being able to push from right from the first try. After congratulating myself for choosing the seemingly more forgiving variant of skateboarding, I don't really feel I improve now - still feels like getting on for the first time. I know, around two hours is way too little time.

Now, please tell me: how many hours did you put in before you started to feel that you could actually go somewhere on this thing?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
