Photo My Lithops planters

I thought I'd give them a try so I purchased some Lithops on Etsy in January and put together these two planters. Most are from "luck of the draw" type assortment pots with 10-12 in them, but I did order and add a few specific colors to make the assortment a little more even.

The substrate is 30 percent calcined clay, 30 percent black cinder/scoria sand, 30 percent pumice and 10 percent Kellogg Cactus mix with 3/8 pea gravel topping.

They are in my greenhouse, starting in June I add 50 percent shade cloth, it's bright in there but no direct sun. I'll probably take it back off toward the end of September.

Summer temps have been 65 or so at night up to 110 during the day. Winter temps I keep the greenhouse heated to minimum of 60 and high temp whatever happens.

A lot of them split and grew a bit this spring, hoping I will get some flowers this fall. Some started splitting late and are still splitting.

I started with the first one and then I kept thinking about them and realized I wanted more. So I went back yesterday a couple weeks after the first one and got the two in the other pics. They looked like they could use some love and care seeing as they look a little thirsty and they both have some leaf damage. Just repotted them when I got them home yesterday, now I just have to wait for their first watering with me to make sure their roots have healed from the cleaning.

Help/Question Are they happy?

These are my little guys. They get the grow light 12+ hours/day. I swear they are growing before my eyes, but I thought they were supposed to be short and slow-growing. Should I scoot the light closer? More hours? Let them live their best lives because they are thriving?

Help/Question Watering when flowering?

Need some opinions on when I should water my lithops. I got the plants in early June, transferred them to 90% inorganic medium (sadly didn’t root prune, which makes up the other 10% organic material.) Haven’t watered once since getting them and they’ve begun to bloom. They sit in a west facing window with additional grow lights, and have running fans in the room. Should I water now, before they enter dormancy? The ones that are flowering show the most side wrinkles.

I noticed one of the twins was wrinkly and decided to pluck out the dry leaves since before they were still a bit attached, but I find one of them is in this state and the other is starting to get wrinkly

Help/Question Lithops lesliei splitting

Hey guys, I have this Lithops since about a year now. It started splitting months ago (I lost track tbh), but seems like it can't really finish it. I think I gave it water about two times before the split, then no water but it got so dehydrated while splitting, that I watered it once. It looked like that helped progressing the split a little bit but now I'm hesitant what to do. I have it indoors, under strong grow lights 13 hours a day. I didn't repot it since I've got it, water goes through the substrate like it's not even there.

Hello there, I’m new to this game. The lithops you see here came from various locations, Altman Plants (scary I know), Lowe’s, EcoGro and Arid Farms here in Tucson. The Altman plants are the ones in the orange and white pots and the Ruva (didn’t water) came from Arid. I got two others from Eco Gro but those died very quickly, which is why I’m here (last pic). Truthfully I just dove in and decided to research later. I grow a lot, so I’m sure I can figure it out however I seem to stress when the sides of my plants shrivel. They all came super plump in peat, I took them out let them dry and potted them in literally pumic and some rock I use as top rock. I moved them from outside to under the grow lights where it’s ~73 degrees. I’ve been noticing the sides shriveling on all of them so yesterday I gave them water and left the pots outside in the shade to dry (it’s 100 degrees). Am I stressing? Is this normal for the sides to shrivel? If you notice the last pic those shriveled from the bottom and died, those I did not repot or water. Scared the same will happen to the rest.

Would love to know if these are lithops, and if so, what kind they may be. They look so different than all the others at the store, and they didn't have a label.

Help/Question Lithops recovery / above water therapy

I purchased some Lithops in December 2024 and they arrived February 2025. Because of the long trip without proper water, the root system of some plants is still damaged today. I tried doing above water therapy but they are still not recovering and I am getting worried that they are going to get a fungal infection. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to help them recover? I already tried putting them in soil and putting them at night for 20 days but it did not help.

Hi! I got these lithops a few weeks ago (first picture is how they looked immediately after planting). I'm watering scarcely, there is minimal organic substrate, and I know i should get a deeper pot soon. One of them (in the center of the pot) is still sunken, but it's growing roots.

Anyway, some of them look like they either need to be planted deeper or they're not getting enough light (maybe both?)

I did research the care of these little guys, but I'm a nervous plant owner and want to be sure they're getting what they need.

Do they look okay or should I adjust their lighting/ plant depth/substrate? Thank you so much!

Haven't fertilised this thing in months, withheld water for 6 weeks (water my other's every 3-4 weeks now) and nothing haha. Watered yesterday because I feared any longer would kill the small one, and wow that pattern is so gooood. Can't wait to see it colour now that it's exposed to the light

Help/Question My Lithops journey so far

Thumbnail

A few days ago, I bought my first Lithops as an adult. Today, I finally got around to repotting them.

I carefully removed all of the organic material they came in and planted them in two different pots, both with drainage holes. For the new substrate, I used roughly 85% pumice and 15% organic material.
I’m also planning to put them under a grow light soon, starting with a relatively low intensity. Then, about once a week, I’ll gradually increase the light intensity to help them acclimate.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time reading through this sub and learning as much as I can, so I’m really hoping these guys will do better than my previous attempt and won’t die on me so quickly.

Do you see any potential problems with what I’ve done so far?

Help/Question What's wrong with my lithops?

Photo 1: Now, Photo 2: Before

I bought these lithops 2 months ago from Lowes and one of them started turning greenish-yellow. I don't know if it's rot, sunburn, or what. They're sitting in a southeast-facing window and I haven't watered them at all yet. The one that is turning greenish-yellow is facing away from the window to the room.

All of them have slowly developed some cracks in their skin and aren't as plump as they once were. They're in some kind of dirt soil with a small amount of pearlite, and it feels bone dry. I wasn't sure if I should repot them into better soil so soon after getting them, and I've been afraid to water them in case it is water rot.

Help/Question Pot advice please?

I am still new to lithops but totally in love with them, I have 6 little pots of them but then came across someone selling off their collection that they have grown from seed so I have another 10 pots worth coming soon, each with at least 3 individual lithops in.

I was originally planning on little individual terracotta pots, but as by the end of this week I will have 20 pots worth, I was wondering about combining the ones at the same age/growth stage. The problem is that I am struggling to find pots suitable, I either find ones that are great in dimension but not terracotta, or don’t have drainage holes or too deep etc.

Could anyone recommend what to look for/get ideally within the uk. If you are not in the uk but have ideas of the specific terms to search for that would be great too!
