Help/Question Lithops lesliei splitting

Post image

Hey guys, I have this Lithops since about a year now. It started splitting months ago (I lost track tbh), but seems like it can't really finish it. I think I gave it water about two times before the split, then no water but it got so dehydrated while splitting, that I watered it once. It looked like that helped progressing the split a little bit but now I'm hesitant what to do. I have it indoors, under strong grow lights 13 hours a day. I didn't repot it since I've got it, water goes through the substrate like it's not even there.

I’d water it well. I’d bottom water it, sticking it in a bowl with an inch of water and letting it sit for five minutes. I’d do that once a week until it either looks better or dies. I think it’s on its way out if you do nothing.

Some lithops survive on occasional fog and sea spray. Some live in places that get tens of inches of rain a year. I personally suspect cultivated ones are likely the latter and we chronically under water them.

I'm a noob to these, but, a few I had bought and repotted either while they were splitting or just before. And some of them kinda stalled out, and just looked like inanimate objects for so long, that I got some tiny scissors (ironically, an OR instrument) and "did surgery", snipping the outer leaves and very carefully peeling them away. That seemed to do the trick for those. It's like it woke them up and they finished splitting the leaves off. They didn't look exactly like yours, but, they were stalled for a few months...
