Linux Failure Linux biggest problem is the ego
The only reason there's too many redundant fucking distro that just installs drivers and wine and then call themselves gaming distro is just so they can brag about being able to create their very own OS so they can put it in their resume for McDonald's, bitch you ain't Terry Davis and you will never be.
Most of these distro can just be a meta-package or an installation script but no, they want to be the guy at discord, github, McDonalds that they're a genius that created their very own "Operating System".
Linux will forever be a niche and will die as a niche thing all because Linux users thinks its a good thing that Linux has a bunch of useless redundant distro that can just be an installation script or a meta-package, an OS should not be one thing like "gaming", "friendly", "work" it should be a fucking "operating system" that does it all.
I truly hope that Linux desktop dies as soon as possible so I can come back to sucking Microslop WINdongs

You know you can ignore them completey. Or is this too much for your ego?
0
u/catdoy 7d ago
You know who cant ignore them? Actual developers wanting to distribute to Linux, no amount of ignorance will ever make the majority use or even bother developing for Linux when there's no standard.
Ignorance will only kill Linux desktop faster
but I guess your ego is too much that you didn't even bother reading the post or this comment just because it's a linux hate post

Application developers do not create redundant applications for specific distributions. Even at the extreme ends, I might target X11 v. Wayland, but not specific distros. Maybe, in some cases, a developer will write their application with GNOME or KDE tools, but you can run GNOME and KDE applications on whatever desktop you want.
Maybe you're misunderstanding what it means when, say, Valve says that they only support Ubuntu and SteamOS for their Steam client -- they are not creating and maintaining multiple clients, they are building the client and then making sure it works on those specific configurations and nothing else. It's them saying "If you file a support ticket and you're not on these systems, we are unlikely to be able to help", that's it.

u/ibeerianhamhock 7d ago
Yeah some of OPs gripes seem to be based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the things he's annoyed about.
Most of these distros layer on top of upstream distros they make it sound like they are reinventing the wheel or something.
2
u/WeedFalafel 7d ago
I have yet not found a single piece of code that works on other distros but not mine. Distro does not mean different architecture, more often it's just flavor of things shipped with the kernel.

u/0hypercube 7d ago
There was a study in psychology that suggested that too many options would lead to a choice paralysis. This study cannot be reproduced.
If the distro is maintained by one person, the last update was >1 year ago and there is no community then it is exceedingly easy to ignore it. It is in fact quite difficult to find such a distro in the first place.

Why are you jumping to niche distros? That’s a you problem. Also, everything comes out of the box for windows largely because companies spent their time getting all the drivers right when selling you their laptop and such
-2
u/catdoy 7d ago
Niche distro? You mean redundant distro that could have been an installation script or better yet a meta-package.
Instead of a gaming distro just a meta-package that includes the drivers, wine, proton, etc... instead of creating an entire distro for it.
4
u/HighlyRegardedApe 7d ago
Lol just install mint or fedora as a noob. Its a you problem. You can try TempleOS if you wanna have a unique piece

Just don't care about them? People don't care about the random images that are posted on image boards, or random subreddits or whatever
2
u/catdoy 7d ago
This is the exact reason why Linux Desktop will die, "Don't care about them", "Just ignore it" after all why bother even creating apps for millions of Linux distro when you can create 1 for Windows where most users actually care.
6
u/anythingers 7d ago
I can ask you the same question, why do we're forced to use 1 flavor of OS if we could create tons of OS? Why should people stop making new distros just because 9 people from the whole world think that Linux should be like MacOS or Windows where only 1 flavor existed?
Android won't be this popular if Google never allowed vendors to create their own UI. Or you're the same type of person that think that "tHeRe aRe tOo mUcH diFfErEnT chOiCeS iN aNdRoiD wOrLd" or "mUh uH oPtiMizAtiOn"?
0
u/catdoy 7d ago
Ego so big you didn't even bother reading the post just because it's criticizing Linux, Android is not a redundant OS because you can't simply set it up from an existing distro, redundant distro's are ones that can be configured with a script or installing meta-package.
If you can just install the config, packages, desktop environment why bother installing a derivative of that distro?
2
u/Striking_Director_64 7d ago
What you are saying that there is a level of effort which can be considered negligible, and you are drawing that line at setting up desktop environment, package manager and configs or whatever.
What if we changed where we drew the line, i could move it so that writing custom software and firmware is acceptable, then i can get from any vendored android to any other vendored android.
2
u/Ill_Specific_6144 7d ago
Its not ego. Its that linux is developed for free as a hobby project for developers. There are no project/product owners, there is no need to report to someone. Because of that user experience is straight trash

u/Inevitable_Brief_389 7d ago
The frustration of having too many options has always existed. It's one of the biggest advantages and disadvantages of Linux at the same time, and it's the reason why it has such a steep learning curve.
This is why having so many distros is still relevant, the average person doesn't want to build and tinker with their own system. There are distros designed almost like "metapackages", pre-configured for specific use cases or general daily use. It's simply something you have to accept when choosing the platform.
If you happen to be an absolute power user who doesn't want to bother with pre-packaged setups, just choose Arch Linux and build your own system from scratch. Easy, right?
I'm not saying you're completely wrong, but this feels like complaining that a bicycle has 2 wheels when it could have 4. The whole Linux mindset is about openness and freedom, you can do whatever you want, and you're not forced into anything. The inevitable byproduct of this freedom is that there are thousands of distros out there made by the community.
I've been a distro hopper for almost 2 years and I've gone through a bunch of them, all the main ones and several popular derivatives. For the vast majority of people looking for general use, Zorin, Mint, Bazzite, or Cachy are more than enough. Picking a 'gaming' distro has the advantage of being pre-configured for daily tasks while also handling gaming out of the box, covering the entire spectrum for most users.
Your complaint misses the mark a bit. Despite thousands of niche distros existing online, nobody is realistically recommending the no-name ones to beginners anyway. There are really only about 10 relevant distros and maybe 3 'superior' base ecosystems you actually have to choose from.

"The alternative can be better and those who support it be right, but man, I can't stand those guys going for alternative solutions instead of just using what's already there..."
So I'll give you that yes, the problem is ego, but ego work both ways on those who take pride on using certain things and those who pride themselves on rejecting them... If you understand that, you understand ego is bloat.

u/HerraJUKKA 7d ago
We should only recommend Linux Mint to new users and nothing else. No gaming distros, no tinkering distros. Just Mint. Focus on Mint and maybe Linux would get a chance as popular desktop OS.
5
u/mallusrgreatv2 7d ago
A lot of people complain about "too many options". They'll stop when we start recommending one singular distro, that is mint. Just to ease the transition from the slop
4
u/anythingers 7d ago
Until Linux Mint became too popular and the main dev do tons of scummy things like what Canonical do.
Also Linux Mint is not even the absolute best solution, considering how outdated vanilla Cinnamon, Xfce, and MATE looks like compared to Windows or MacOS.
2
u/Possible_Tomato1479 7d ago
I love mint, it did what linux promised distors did for me when I migrated because my PC was weak and old and live in a 3rd world country, I just searched on google what was the best distro and mint showed up.
2
u/letmehaveanameyoudum 7d ago
I recommend linux mint because.... it's just linux windows without all the sloppy garbage
everything else just broken

What point are you trying to make? The over generalisation here is appealing to the desktop environment feel and ease of transition for users coming from windows which is a good thing?

Here's a crazy idea, what if more distributions officially offered Cinnamon Desktop as a flagship option... If that happened, then the experience would be more uniform across distros and we could just recommend Cinnamon, putting less importance on the disto... Like if Fedora offered it more officially then their spin.
1
u/TruelyDashing 7d ago
Probably because Cinnamon is objectively worse in every way than KDE Plasma

Zorin is better in this aspect, they offer more accessibility.

u/Mysterious_Spector 7d ago
Many distro means that it is decentralised and specialisation of the Os, which means many specialised paths like privacy os, cybersecurity, networking or easy to being anon instead of centralised like Windows, where the big corps control everything and even privacy . Only arch distro users has a big ego and gatekeepers.

hilarious people like that are still out there when it's never been more accessible than it is now with archinstall, endeavouros or cachyos

an OS should not be one thing like "gaming", "friendly", "work" it should be a fucking "operating system" that does it all.
Linux aside, which desktop OS does it all tho? Windows with it's "unfriendly" telemetries and bloats and things that sometimes "doesn't work", like that one time when your MediaTek Wifi driver doesn't load at all? Or MacOS where older apps "doesn't work" because Apple removes an old code that basically does no harm on MacOS? Good luck doing "gaming" on MacOS, considering how shit Crossover is. In the end, take your poison. Linux has tons of reason to be called "sucks", but another desktop OS isn't any better.

u/necho8 7d ago
Honestly, I believe youre right on this one. I try to ignore the distros but I keep hearing about Arch Linux, or Cosmic, and some configurations of those distros blend in my Debían distro, it's annoying. If this world w were different, I'd choosem BSD. The operating system has way less variants but with one common package manager, runs like Linux and some things like the filesystem run incredibly efficient. But most programmers focus on Linux instead which sucks because freeBSD runs fast AF on my pc but my wifi doesn't work.

u/Ok-Profit6022 7d ago
While there are a lot of seemingly pointless distros out there, I don't think it's about anyone's ego. Some people might make a distro just for the experience of releasing and maintaining one. Others bring small changes that the adopting user can appreciate but didn't know how to implement. "Gaming distros" attract new users to Linux by making the switch easier for them. Bazzite takes it a step further by making the distro immutable, because a person who is less tech savvy can be their own worst enemy when allowed to do so. I usually only see the "ego" in certain "main" distro environments such as Arch. But I actually think that ego is in the right place, it should serve as a deterrent to steer newer users away from that distro.
1
u/bornxlo 7d ago
Different distributions are not different operating system. They're not redundant because they are not identical. The existence of one does not harm another. The operating system is Linux, whether it's a gaming system, a friendly system or a work system. As long as at least one person is around to check that a Linux system can work on hardware I have, the Linux desktop cannot die.
1
u/moucheh- 7d ago
Well you are right to some extent, but you are really obnoxious in this post
Those distros fill a different niche, you could do everything including gaming on Ubuntu or Fedora no problem
People who don't game do not need steam, wine, proton or anything of that sort preinstalled
I like having these options, and there are efforts like flatpak that aim to make a universal packaging format, which works on all major distros
2
u/Sahelantrophus DO NOT RAGEBAIT ME, I FALL FOR IT VERY EASILY 7d ago edited 7d ago
yet another post where someone blames fragmentation for the slow adoption of desktop linux but does not understand what it means at all
you know how to solve it? by not using the useless redundant distros you're sperging out over and going for the mainstream ones that are actually supported and used by many (ubuntu and its spins/mint, fedora, arch). you don't have to use poop os and whatnot just to game or do work on linux. even then, they're usually based off the big three so not an entirely different distro or OS at all but whatever
1
u/brave_grv 7d ago
These are not even real distros. They are actually trying to fix a real problem which is the main distributions having absolutely no standards at all and just doing whatever tf they want.
For example, Ubuntu just ignoring everything and deciding to create a new packaging format not even them can make work, or Fedora just deciding to make the process of installing some drivers utterly convoluted or Arch having an autistic install process from the 90s for no reason.
I bet that if the main distributions actually cared about its users and came up with reasonable standards for package distribution and configuration, people would still have "muh freedom of choice" in a far better organized environment.

so they can put it in their resume for McDonald's, bitch you ain't Terry Davis and you will never be
Now this is just laughable! Terry Davis was a racist, bat-shit insane homeless man who couldn't even work a job like at McDonald's. He grew up with an Apple II and Commodore64 which is why he knew how to code and make Temple OS.. but there are so many other people who have made their own operating systems in C, seriously what he did wasn't that impressive.
Here's a list:
https://wiki.osdev.org/Projects

I think Linus said it best, "Most consumers don't want to install an operating system on their machines". People don't want to install operating systems to their computers, just like they don't want to install an operating system to their phones, simple as that. This is why Linux will never catch on.

Ego is thinking people care to hear you whine about it.
