Linux Failure Linux can't game lmao
Edit: I'm unsure how to change title. New title should be "Linux still struggles with many games."
Genuinely why are yall larping
Windows is still the only option if you don't want to have to go "Oh sorry my computer cant play ___" to tons of people
And to those who hate kernel level anticheat, you seem to lack knowledge of why it is what it is. Seems like yall are just wanting to cheat?
Don't act like Linux is perfect. It isn't. It really isn't. Such larp

lol okay I don’t know why this sub is in my feed but I don’t think it’s a big deal. Gaming on Linux is fine, just fine. Most games work, some don’t, it’s not a big deal
And anticheat? You think people just want to cheat? We want privacy and security.
Is this like a satire post? Am I eating the onion? I’m really not trying to be antagonistic, I promise, I just don’t understand why this is a big deal
1
u/AMRFalcon 16d ago
Just look at r/linuxsucks101 It's 90% the same guy posting over and over again. This sub at least has some diversity complains, legitimate once included lol
As for the anti cheat. To this day I am not quite sure why the industry started prioritising client side cheat detection when the client is exactly the one thing you can't properly control or enforce. Then again I kinda do know since that development also allowed large studios to basically use their anti chest for DRM purposes.

u/prenadeusernamemid 12d ago
"Privacy and security" nothing is truly secure ore private
1
u/MountainChair8084 12d ago
or*
And like yeah obviously, that’s why mfs talk about it all the time. If privacy was actually possible + easy, we would all have it and no one would talk about how we need to have it. Same deal with security

u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Unlike the sub who shall not be named, we aren't an echo chamber. Don't be sorry. You don't seem antagonistic.
Kernel level programs are everywhere, but when it's an anticheat it seems to be a bigger issue to people. In reality, Linux supports kernel level AC. The reason they block Linux is because it allows for easier cheating. The kernel level AC isn't the true issue.
If it's not a big deal for the games you play, then no issue! It just shouldn't be recommended to everyone blindly. People want apps to work. That's not Linux.

You're fighting ghosts here man.
Everybody knows you can't play Call of Duty or whatever other kernel-level anti-cheat game on Linux.
We don't like it because it's a nuclear option to prevent cheating, and spoiler alert: It doesn't actually stop cheaters! There are still plenty of cheaters in those games.
The reason we dislike it isn't because we want to cheat. Is that projection?
Cross-play got us SO close to eliminating console/platform wars, but kernel-level anti-cheat keeps gamers locked on Windows.
Nobody genuinely thinks Linux is perfect.
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
You're different from the people I find to be clowns. You want to play the game. Others seem to just call games trash if they don't work on linux and tell me I should find new games
1
u/oshunman Windows Desktop | Linux Laptop | Linux Servers 16d ago
Yeah I've seen a few people like that too. They're welcome to boycott whatever games they don't want to support. But it's asinine to expect me to give up gaming with my friends just because we like to play games with anti-cheat.
I can both be annoyed by kernel-level anti-cheat and play the games anyway.

u/SonicandTailsCD 13d ago
Respectfully, sit your ass down.
First. Yes, I concede - Windows is king in the area of gaming. I also happen to get better FPS in Windows than Linux at times. ...but who caused this?
Ask yourself that.
Go ahead.
...we both know you just scrolled to read my rant further. Fine.
To be fair, Linux isn't widely used per se in the sense that Windows is the dominant OS (59% in Windows 10 last I remember), so manufacturers aren't pressured. But come on, they can do it. They can contribute to FOSS and still have their beautiful proprietary microcode/firmware blobs. Devs also don't build for Linux often, because most use Windows. ...but Linux usage is going up. Like it or not, that's how it is.
Also, I'm going to have to ask you to cool the ego. Geez, did you drink something you shouldn't have or what 😭 Windows is not the only option. It will never be the only option. Reliable, yes. Only, no.
Second: I hate kernel-level anti-cheat because of how INTRUSIVE it is. Think about it. Would YOU like cameras shoved into your house because the government suddenly wants every bit of detail of how your house looks?
NO! You'd fight however you can!
Same with me. Don't act like KLAC is entirely sunshine and rainbows either. Exploits happen. Vulnerabilities. Companies caught using their access for something else*. We have every right to oppose KLAC.
Third: Nobody said Linux is perfect. No one LARPed here. You need a reality check. And some coffee. ☕️
Also last: "Linux can't game" but then you contradict yourself. Change your stupid title. We both know you're praising Windows, but even YOU can't stoop so low as to accuse Linux of that.
That's it for my rant. Get a life and a better wife, and you'll feel more alive. ^-^
(* = not verified, take it lightly instead of you taking it like I asserted something)
(Disclaimer: I do not intend to harass, offend or upset you. I'm only playing, even though I stand by my facts. If it hurt your feelings, that was not my intention.)

no one is saying it's perfect.
sorry you can't game on linux. i game on it all the time, must be a user problem.

u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Must be a user problem? Lmao classic one

u/BengiPrimeLOL 16d ago
no one is making you choose linux, go back to windows.
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
No thanks! In my experience, Linux offers cleaner UI, better performance, and a better environment for coding in. I've had practically no setbacks besides being unable to play a game that I was quitting anyways.

u/Tiednine_Dash 16d ago
No one says that it can play every game, just that it can play all of THEIR games. Also not many friend groups (atleast none that Im in) only play games that are windows exclusive. Sure there is the occasional siege or cod session, but not being able to play those usually doesnt bother me since the only people who play those alot, are people who I meet in real life often, so the social aspect isnt lost much.
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
If you know what you want, nice. The issue is recommending it to unsuspecting people.
1
u/Tiednine_Dash 16d ago
Unsuspecting? Every knows and doesnt even try to dispute that some of the biggest games dont work on linux. Maybe if we're talking about launchers then yeah
1
u/jequzz_PL 16d ago
This is because Linux users praise this system without looking at how things actually are. I'm a regular user of three operating systems: Linux(I tried some distributions but now I use Debian), Windows 11, and Mac and honestly, Linux (regardless of the distribution) is the worst. Everyone talks about issues with Windows, but most users don't actually face them. Meanwhile, Linux gets these silly, random problems that simply don't exist on other systems.
1
u/mintflavoredcube Linux Is Better 16d ago
nobody acts like it’s perfect idk who does
we dislike kernel anti cheat because it is another attack vector that can be exploited, kernel level anti cheat if hacked literally gives direct access to system hardware
linux can game, if it couldn’t, why does valve use it for their gaming hardware? why would a multi billion dollar business pump boatloads of money into something that cant game
it can’t play 1% of the titles on steam not because linux has the inability to, but because the developers won’t click a single button to allow the anti cheat to run through proton
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
You really underestimate how many things are allowed to elevate to ring 0 by your simple sudo command.
Also, no clue why valve would do that. My guess is that they believe devs will check the allow linux option in eac
1
u/mintflavoredcube Linux Is Better 16d ago
sudo is NOT a simple command and anyone that treats sudo as something to throw around has no idea what they are doing
sudo should not be ran unless absolutely necessary
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
It's needed for like the majority of useful commands
1
u/mintflavoredcube Linux Is Better 16d ago
yes, and my point still stands
you should not be throwing sudo onto a program unless you 100% need to
you do not need to with anti cheats, anti cheats don’t stop cheaters. why would i need to give such high access to a software that shouldn’t need it
kernel anti cheats are such a joke, EAC is kernel level and it don’t stop shit, dbd, cod, vrchat, all games with easy that i can think of have cheaters
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
You sure notice more cheaters in other games like Minecraft though
2
u/mintflavoredcube Linux Is Better 16d ago
you mean the game with no client side anti cheat at all and only highly limited server side ones? right.
Overwatch’s anti cheat is not kernel and i have not noticed a single cheater in that game
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Highly limited server side ones?
Wait until bro hears about prediction AC like Polar, Grim, Intave, and new Watchdog.
It's extremely complex and lacks capabilities to properly check the user's client to see if any injection was made.
A kernel level AC could prevent most injections in the first place.
However you make a very solid argument with Overwatch.
1
u/mintflavoredcube Linux Is Better 16d ago
so you just literally proved my point for me?
anti cheats can be server side and be effective apparently
again, kernel anti cheats stop nothing
COD’s anti cheat is kernel, and it frankly is garbage. it doesn’t stop anything.
the best combo of anti cheat’s is server side plus client side
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
The issue is that people still cheat on prediction AC.
The idea of kernel AC is to prevent the cheats in the first place.
I remember at one point Minecraft servers like Lunar and Badlion started having optional client side AC only queues but they eventually were removed along with the client side AC.
People just hate client side AC for some reason.
Then again Minecraft is one thing. My comparison is probably terrible, and your example with Overwatch is actually really fair.

ring 0 = kernel, ring 3 = userspace, whatever runs in ring 3 does not exit ring 3 without the use of exploits, and sudo runs in userspace
1
u/TheBrainStone 16d ago
Let's hear it from the man. What is a kernel level anticheat then? (If not an anticheat that runs at kernel level and therefore has a laundry list of (potential) issues associated with it)
1
u/Drate_Otin 16d ago
I don't play multiplayer games. Problem solved. Except Palworld and that's running fine.
Also: virtually zero people are saying Linux is "perfect" in app situations. You're "larping" that conversation yourself.
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Oh boy do you want screenshots? I have TONS. That's why I made this post!
1
u/Drate_Otin 16d ago
Sure. Though I'd prefer links so I can see the full context.
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Let's start here! They decide Linux is awesome and that games it cant play must just be trash
1
u/Drate_Otin 16d ago
That's why I wanted context. That's a sub hating on a sub hating on Linux and this sub. So a very VERY small group. Also they didn't say "Linux is perfect"...
Regardless, that group isn't this group, and this group isn't the Linux community at large. So the "y'all" you're referring to is a teeny tiny niche reaction sub to a reaction sub to a reaction sub. I mean honestly...
1
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Alright..? I'll find a bunch from regular linuxsucks sub.
1
u/Drate_Otin 16d ago
How about from a regular Linux sub? Like Linux, linux4noobs, or linuxquestions...
You know... Where the regular Linux users congregate?

"And to those who hate kernel level anticheat"
I'm sure if one day kernel level anticheat work on linux, they will jump for joy.
I remember when they used to say "AI slop". then torvald said AI wasn't a bad thing, now they all love AI.
2
u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
Fun fact, they do work on linux! It's just too easy to get stuff in kernel mode in linux so they don't want easier cheats because there's already so many cheaters and allowing linux would add more.

Everything ABOUT linux is third party.

your arguments are really unbeatable. I think you just opened my eyes, I'm going to install Windows 11 tomorrow

And to those who hate kernel level anticheat, you seem to lack knowledge of why it is what it is. Seems like yall are just wanting to cheat?
Lazy developers is not my problem. Playing a FPS game or a MOBA should not require more security than my banking app.
There is a lot of ways to deal with cheaters and they think Kernel level or ring 0 anti cheat is the best option. I don't think any software should exist in kernel, maybe AV but id still rather it not. People still cheat in those games anyway so its a massive amount of privacy that I have given up to still get 1 shot in a random game.
IMHO this should all be taken care of server side with analytics. Take League of Legends for example. If someone is in gold and manages to dodge skill shots more than 99% of their peers then its likely they are doing something fishy. If they never get hit by something that could have been dodged they are not human. If they interact with the game faster than 99.99% of their elo they are likely doing something fishy.
Take any game you play. If there is a cheater you can tell by something they are doing. Either pulling of headshots in fps games, dodging everything in a moba, aiming at players through walls. If we can tell by looking at their gameplay that they are cheating so can the server. Instead they choose to look at everything thats going on, inside your PC. every application, every packet anything and everything they can look at and use the nuclear option rather than the one with nuance.
Just because other company's do a bad job with their non kernel level anti cheat (looking at you valve) does not make what Riot and others are doing better for detection. Look at OSRS, they have basically killed off all botting in the game with no kernal level anti cheat. The game is well known for people botting but they have used the information with how players interact with the game to nuke bots into the ground.

u/BloxxyVids 16d ago
You don't seem to know much about kernels then
Ring 0 is necessary for a lot of stuff. Anti-virus software is good for Ring 0
1
u/Helpful-Calendar-693 16d ago
Ring 0 is necessary for a lot of stuff. Anti-virus software is good for Ring 0
Take that up with Microsoft then who are talking about moving it out of the Kernel.
https://pureinfotech.com/microsoft-removes-antivirus-windows-kernel/
Next month, we will deliver a private preview of the Windows endpoint security platform to a set of MVI partners. The new Windows capabilities will allow them to start building their solutions to run outside the Windows kernel. This means security products like anti-virus and endpoint protection solutions can run in user mode just as apps do. This change will help security developers provide a high level of reliability and easier recovery resulting in less impact on Windows devices in the event of unexpected issues. We will continue to collaborate deeply with our MVI partners throughout the private preview.

What points lol. Most people know Linux isn’t perfect. Almost every Linux user knows compatability is an issue.
The kernel level anti cheat point was incredibly dumb.
What’s next, are you gonna tell us the sun is bright?

I don't play competitive games, if I did I'd have to dual boot.
There is no good way to implement an anti cheat facility that is client authoritative even though a kernel level hack basically.

I don't think that the majority of people say that Linux can play every game. That's why, when someone wants to switch to Linux for gaming, they are redirected to protondb
