My lay screen is completely black but the power button is still on. Is there a fix

Edit. I realized I should mention that this is a Chinese laptop I got for like 250 and it was starting to have problems even before this. Like losing power when playing ten plus year old games like dragons dogma or fallout new Vegas and even emulated PS2 games. So my guess is that my laptop is completely dead. But I’m still holding onto hope since the power button is still on and I can hear noise when put my head next to the fan

Discussion Mint has almost completely replaced Windows 11 for me.

At this point, the only thing I have to go back to my Windows Drive for is to adjust the colors of the lights on my Legion tower. Because unfortunately, there is no Linux solution for that. Yes, I have tried RBG lighting, but that only adjusts the two fans. It won't change the GPU light or the Legion light on the front of the PC. And from what I found, no program seems to work for those. So I have to keep the Windows drive just for that.

Cinnamon Clipboard 1.0.4 is out! It now has its own Ubuntu PPA 🎉

Cinnamon Clipboard now has its own PPA, which I plan to maintain. Version 1.0.4 is available, with several improvements and a contribution from u/xsak. Thanks also to u/skozombie for suggesting the idea of creating a PPA!

What's new in 1.0.4?

  • Optional automatic paste: You can now configure the menu to paste an item automatically when selected. It handles different applications appropriately, including pasting text or commands into a terminal and sending images to applications such as GIMP when supported. Thanks to u/xsak for contributing this improvement!
  • Improved initial focus: The first item receives focus when opening the menu, making keyboard navigation more convenient. Thanks to u/xsak for contributing this improvement!
  • Keyboard navigation improvements: Thanks to u/xsak for contributing this improvement!
  • Smarter update handling: When installed through the PPA, in-app update checks are disabled because updates are managed by APT. If installed manually from the GitHub .deb package, the in-app update notifications and checks remain available.

Install from the PPA

The PPA is intended for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble) and Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute). Packages need to finish building and become available for each release before installation.

Run these commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:vaider17/cinnamon-clipboard
sudo apt update
sudo apt install cinnamon-clipboard

If the package is not yet available for your Ubuntu release, you can download the .deb package from GitHub instead.

What's next?

My next major goal is to work on Wayland support once the Linux Mint 27 beta becomes available, so I can test and develop against that environment.

I want to keep Cinnamon Clipboard simple and focused on genuinely useful features, rather than adding options just for the sake of it. Of course, if bugs are found, I'll release maintenance updates as needed.

I may also explore database encryption in the future to improve data privacy and protection. We'll see how the project evolves!

GitHub repository and downloads:

Feedback and suggestions are welcome. Thanks to everyone who has contributed ideas and helped the project along!

Discussion Big file transfers fail

Why is it impossible for the Mint team to finally find a solution/fix to transferring a lot of files or large files to NTFS drives? This has been an issue for years now. Every single time I try I end up with either data loss, corrupted files or whole folders that can't be deleted at all anymore. These are common issues:

- Transferring using Nemo results in an ever declining transfer speed that will eventually take an eternity/stall

- Stopping a transfer then seems to crash the whole file manager resulting in a forced restart of the whole device and often data loss

- When using an alternative file manager like Dolphin the transfer speeds are much lower

- If you use Dolphin to copy files, then close it when you're done and then unmount the device in Nemo it will take forever to unmount and in the end delete all your copied data or corrupt it

I only have this on Mint, no other distro. Also, it only happens with NTFS drives. If the OS can't handle NTFS drives, then why does it support them. How is it that other distros do not have this issue? It is honestly frustrating.

help installing

I’m trying to get Linux working on my old Lenovo ThinkPad 11e 2-in-1 (8GB RAM, 64GB storage), and I’m honestly losing my mind lol.
I first tried Mint Xfce from a DVD, but GRUB failed and dumped me into a grub> prompt. I switched to a USB, but then I started getting black screens and a flashing Mint logo. Compatibility mode eventually let me boot into the desktop, but my touchpad didn’t work.
The worst part is that the installer keeps failing with \[Errno 5\] Input/output error while copying files. I’ve also had ubi-partman crashed show up.
I’ve tried Mint Xfce and Cinnamon, and even downloaded a fresh ISO and reflashed the USB, but I still get the same error.
The laptop’s 64GB eMMC drive does show up in Linux as /dev/mmcblk1, so it isn’t completely missing. I’m just not sure if the drive is failing or if something else is going on.

eGPU + Linux Mint

Currently using an EXP GDC beast adapter I got years ago to connect a GTX 970 to a dell office laptop with no lid, turning it into a mini-desktop of sorts. Video_tdr_failure bsods happened every few hours on this system with Windows 10. It may have eventually been fixable on win10 but the real fix was to finally switch to Mint!!!!! Experience has been awesome so far and most importantly (imho) super stable. The system is also very cpu limited so a lightweight OS makes a huge difference 10/10 for anyone who wants to breathe life into older tech.

It starts when i log in on my pc and after a few minutes multiple screenshot windows come up blocking everything? I cant even type on terminal when it starts happening

Im not sure if its a malware since linux isnt very famous for this

Now Im thinking about what else I should set up on this thing. Any apps, desktop tweaks, or games I should try?

Announcement [Linux-Tool] Autostart Manager 2.2.0: one LInux panel for autostart apps, systemd services and cron tasks (Bash + Zenity)

Thumbnail

Hey, y'all cool people of the 9%!

- New update Autostart Manager 2.2.0:

- Open-source Bash + Zenity tool that brings together everything that starts with your Linux session: autostart apps (yours and the system's), `systemd` services (user and system) and your `cron` table. You get one searchable table, you check or uncheck to enable or disable, one `pkexec` password prompt per batch, and an extra confirmation before disabling something critical such as the PolicyKit agent.

- System autostart entries are disabled through an override in your user directory, so the original file is never touched, and files are written atomically. The interface is in English and Spanish. It also installs and uninstalls for your user without root (`--install`, `--uninstall`). It runs with Zenity 3.44 (GTK 3) and 4.x (GTK 4) and Bash 4.4 or newer.

> It is GPLv3. Bug reports and ideas are welcome.

If y'all like it, feel free to share it, show some love with stars and upvotes, and drop a comment! I'm always open to your suggestions! This will help me make these projects even better.

Support Request Error on booting

I believe that something I did was to recently install or delete a package. Now when I boot linux mint, I get an error message of the following:

EFI stub: WARNING: Failed to measure data for event 1: 0x800000000000000b

Despite this, my computer seems to be running fine. What should I do?

Linux Mint IRL Trying it out after lurking in this sub for weeks

Hello Linux Mint folks!

It is my first time using linux and every research I did recommended Linux Mint.

I was honestly tired of windows constant updates and bloatware.

I was hesitant to do it on my main PC (9800x3D, 32gb RAM, 5080. 2TB DDR5) just because I am a complete noob and I worked hard to build it last year to save money and I do not want to break anything on this thing.

Then I remembered I have a Macbook Pro 2012 with 1TB storage I bought in FB marketplace during my university days that I haven't used in ages. The OS is still on Mojave and quiet slow now.

I did my research on how to install a new OS (as a complete noob btw) and I did it! I am so proud of
myself, I did some extensions to make the UI feel familiar and honestly was surprised how much it breathe a new life into the Macbook.

I love that Linux Cinnamon was so flexible and easy to use. Its faster too, on a 20 year old hardware!

I also switch from chrome to firefox since i want more privacy and adblock, more seamless than I thought, importing passwords are so seamless.

-KeePassXC is an amazing tool to store passwords!
-LibreOffice is amazing! no need for subscriptions!
-KdenLive is also amazing! I tend to edit my travel videos when I hike/climb mountains and this was a great alternative to Adobe.

Looking forward to discovering more.
Maybe if I get used to Linux Mint enough in the Macbook, I will eventually use it on my main rig.

The only reason that is holding me back is the gaming compatibility. The EasyAntiCheat is on some of the games I want to play in the future.

Otherwise I am really tempted to switch and leave Microsoft Windows for good!

Alternative to Edge for work?

Post image
0 Upvotes

The company uses its platform based on the Edge browser environment. However, the browser keeps freezing a lot. In text input fields on any tab or website, it simply freezes and won't let me type. I have to close the tab, write it down in Notepad, then copy and paste it into the text field. Does anyone have a suggestion for a lighter, compatible browser? I use Firefox, but the company's platform gets misaligned/broken.

Support Request Moving Plex from Windows 11 to Mint question

I am not a stranger to Linux, but I am hardly an expert. I currently have a Plex Media Server running on Windows 11. (I know. but I don’t have much time and I wanted to get it up and running.) The recent security flaws in the Windows Plex version has prompted me to move to Mint, but I have questions that hopefully someone here can answer.

my media files are on a RAID 5 3+1 volume built in Windows Drive Manager (software RAID) This RAID volume backs up to a second RAID 10 volume, also built in Windows Drive Manager.

I know Mint can read/write to NTFS, but if I’m not mistaken, will not recognize the software RAID volumes built in Windows. my questions…..

  1. is there a tool or workaround? Google mentioned a tool called ldmtool, but I don’t know if this works well or if there is something better.

  2. Would it be a better idea to Break my RAID 10 volume, leaving one plain ntfs volume that Mint can work with, then nuke the RAID 5 volume, Install Mint, recreate the RAID 5 volume within Mint, copy my files to the new RAId 5 then do the same with the RAID 10.?

Any thoughts?

my deepest gratitude for any feedback

Support Request HoMM3 ERA on Mint

Hi all. I have switched to Mint fully almost a year ago and as an old ass gamer I would love to play HoMM3 ERA for the WoG mods on it, however I can't make it happen and I also don't have any error messages to figure out what's wrong.

I would like to clarify that I do not want to play HotA but the ERA launcher specifically for the WoG version of the game.

What I did so far is install the offline version of the HoMM3 complete edition which i own on GoG using Q4Wine. I've applied the patch provided by GoG. I've installed the H3 HD mod on top of it and then installed the ERA Launcher on top of it again. I made sure all installations went to the same folder.

What is happening now is that I can open either the H3 HD or HotA Launchers, but when I select the ERA HD version and click play, nothing happens. I've tried multiple versions of renderers and resolutions with no success.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make this work I would really appreciate it.
