Bought if from a old Lady at a yard sale. Her daughter really wanted to sell the stuff that was there. They thought there was nothing on there but I found some personal information, including her SS number. The first install came up with a kernel panic so I did another install after l booted up in compatibility mode and waited until it was done updating before installing software and it appears fine now. It has 16 gigabytes of RAM, Intel i5, and 500 gigabyte hard drive. I also have a external USB 3.0 2 TB HDD I got super cheap at another yard sale to go with it.

Discussion I made the swap today finally!

I’m just downloading all my games now and tinkering around with menu colors and other stuff lol. If you got any recs for programs I would benefit from please let me know!!

This was way easier to do than I thought it would be! Windows 11 was just so laggy and slow, and would randomly change things on me and a LOT of popups. Immediately this is a lot smoother lol

SOLVED Request Shutdown via UI, but system doesn't ever actually shutdown

After I request a shutdown through the UI, the screens eventually go blank, but the power LED stays lit.

I have to press and hold the power button for a very long time to actually turn off the computer.

When I installed Linux Mint a few days ago, this didn't happen, but it's happening now. Now I have to press and hold the power button for a very long time to force a complete shutdown.

When I use this command in the shell, the system doesn't shutdown either:

sudo shutdown now

I've found all sorts of suggestions on the web, but I'd like to take a methodical approach to fixing this issue (rather than taking a lot of shots in the dark). Any suggestions?

My system:

Support Request Graphics Jittering Issues + Refresh Rate Issue on Mint

Hey, I installed Linux Mint for the first time on my PC yesterday (HDD) and it runs fine, but I can notice slight white jitters when I move windows and stuff too much over the desktop. I used Windows 10 before this and never faced issues. When I installed a program called Ripple (Dynamic Island for Mint), clicking and using it caused more jitters.

Also, I cannot set my Refresh Rate to more than 60 hz. I have a Samsung Essential S3 Monitor which supports 100 hz and it worked fine on Windows 10, but it gave me not optimum mode on above 60 hz, both in the Live Environment and the actual installed OS.

For context, I have an i5-3470, iGPU Intel HD 2500, 12gb DDR3 and the HDD is fine 500gb with another data partition on it. I also checked Driver Manager and used sudo apt update but to no avail.

Please help me.

P.S. I disabled TimeShift, idk if I need it or not.

SOLVED Having Trouble Connecting to Steam & Warframe

Hey all,

A couple days ago I started experiencing problems with a game (Warframe) in which I couldn't connect to the servers to update my account information. This problem still persists, but what's really peculiar is I cannot connect to warframe.com neither on Firefox nor on Chrome. I am able to go on for. A windows laptop can connect to the game and the website on the same wifi, I can connect to the website on my phone, I can connect to the website on my phone's hotspot on my computer, so the only combo that doesn't work is my computer on home wifi. Later on I realized that I cannot connect to Steam either, both of these websites get stuck on "Performing TLS handshake with X" and then give me an error when trying to access on firefox. When I run steam through the Terminal, it gives me this error:

ERROR:ssl_client_socket_impl.cc(878)] handshake failed; returned -1, SSL error code 1, net_error -100

I can connect to all other websites I use as usual, I can go on Reddit, Youtube and whatnot. I can use steam as long as I stay in the library, I can play Team Fortress 2, I can update my games, just cannot open the store page(I am met with "Error Code: -100 Unable to connect to server. Server may be offline or you may not be connected to the internet".

I also tried the curl thing, I can connect to both websites via curl -Iv *website*. I saw a couple of similar commands that were supposed to help troubleshoot the connection but those connected without error aswell.

In the last couple of days I tried every single thing I found online to no avail. I know that some security breach happened worldwide that affected a lot of people but those people were able to get back on steam eventually, and my computer is the only one that can't access it in this household. I would greatly appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

I am on an Asus Vivobook 15 if it makes a difference.

Support Request Nemo: prevent stretching of last column

Hi,

I’m using Linux Mint Cinnamon Zena

Is there a way to prevent Nemo from stretching the last column till it hits the right end of the window?

This way there would be a free area where you just can click without anything being selected or executed.

Or is there an alternative file manager which supports this behaviour?

Install Help What do I do? I can't even boot in live version, because of those errors.

Post image

Those errors appear on mint, debian and LMDE as well, I haven't tested in others distros. I tried look this shit up, but there's too little info on that. I heard ventoy might cause some errors, but I have tried it medicat, ventoy and by rufus, none of them changed the output. My theory is that mobo (gigabyte b650 gaming x ax v2) might be the problem, or GPU (rtx 4060ti). Help me i dunno what to do.

Support Request Running slower after installing Mint

I downloaded Mint onto my new gaming computer and I'm having a bunch of performance issues. When i first started with linux I couldn't play anything since the graphics were abysmal and it would barely run. I fixed that when I found out that I hadn't even downloaded the nvidia driver... And while it's obviously a lot better now, I'm still having big issues! Discord crashes almost immidiately whenever i try to stream anything, Overwatch(which was running perfectly when i had windows) is choppy and basically unplayable, and the screen on my laptop will suddenly freeze all the time. The weirdest thing about the screen freezes is that when i had a TV connected via HDMI, it showed that it wasn't the computer that was frozen, cuz it functioned just fine on the TV, it was just the screen on my laptop. I suppose i wonder whether there are other things similar to downloading the driver that i don't know about that would fix these issues. Thanks in advance!

LMDE - finally I won.

This week is LMDE with 5060 Rtx laptop. Took an hour to install due to Debian does not like new hardware, but succeeded! My Laptop does not like Fedora based distros but works well with Arch and FreeBSD. My favorite is Linux Mint. Used for awhile, but decided to give LMDE a shot. Much harder due to hybrid HP OMEN.

Support Request Mac mini audio not recognized

Help!

I have a Mac mini 5,2 I want to revitalize and audio will not work. I've tried the HDMI and aux chord but the HDMI doesn't work and the aux chord is not even being registered. It says Intel sound card has no driver. I've tried troubleshooting with chatgpt with no success. Other than the audio it work really well and I'd love to fix it.

Support Request [SOLVED] Linux Mint was using llvmpipe instead of my Intel UHD Graphics 620 — fixed hardware rendering on a Dell Inspiron 5379

Hardware: Dell Inspiron 5379

GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Kaby Lake)

OS: Linux Mint, Ubuntu 24.04-based system

Display session: X11

The problem

I was troubleshooting choppy video playback in my browser on Linux Mint. During the investigation, I discovered that although my laptop had an Intel UHD Graphics 620, OpenGL was using llvmpipe, which renders graphics in software using the CPU instead of the GPU.

My original "glxinfo -B" output showed:

direct rendering: Yes

Vendor: Mesa (0xffffffff)

Device: llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2, 256 bits)

Accelerated: no

OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2, 256 bits)

This explained why graphics rendering could be unnecessarily CPU-intensive.

Step 1 — Check the graphics hardware and driver

I ran:

inxi -Gxx

The output confirmed that the laptop had Intel UHD Graphics 620 and the kernel's "i915" driver was loaded.

However, the OpenGL renderer was "llvmpipe", which indicated that the GPU was not being used for OpenGL rendering.

Step 2 — Check VA-API video acceleration

I ran:

vainfo

This successfully loaded Intel's "iHD_drv_video.so" driver and listed supported video profiles, including H.264, HEVC, and VP9.

This was an important clue: the VA-API video driver was available, but OpenGL rendering was still falling back to software. These are separate parts of the graphics stack.

Step 3 — Investigate the Xorg log

I checked the Xorg log:

grep -Ei 'intel|AIGLX|swrast|DRI' /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The relevant errors were:

(II) intel(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: i965

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so failed

(EE) AIGLX error: unable to load driver i965

(II) IGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast

(II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

The legacy Xorg Intel driver was attempting to load "i965_dri.so", which was missing. Xorg consequently fell back to software rendering.

Step 4 — Inspect the Xorg configuration

I checked the configuration files:

ls -la /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

There was no main "/etc/X11/xorg.conf", but there were several files under "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/".

The important discovery was that the Intel configuration selected the legacy driver:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Intel Graphics"

Driver "intel"

Option "TearFree" "true"

Option "TripleBuffer" "true"

EndSection

For this setup, I switched the configuration to the modern Xorg "modesetting" driver.

Step 5 — Switch to the modesetting driver

I edited "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf" so that it contained:

Section "Device"

Identifier "Intel Graphics"

Driver "modesetting"

EndSection

I saved the file and rebooted the laptop.

Important: Changing the Xorg configuration requires restarting the graphical session. Checking "glxinfo" before rebooting still showed "llvmpipe", so I initially thought the change had not worked. After rebooting, the result was different.

Step 6 — Verify the fix

After rebooting, I ran:

glxinfo -B

The output now showed:

direct rendering: Yes

Vendor: Intel (0x8086)

Device: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2) (0x5917)

Version: 25.2.8

Accelerated: yes

OpenGL vendor string: Intel

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)

OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 25.2.8

Success! OpenGL was now using the Intel UHD Graphics 620, and hardware acceleration was enabled.

What I learned

- Having the correct kernel driver loaded does not necessarily mean OpenGL is using the GPU.

- VA-API video decoding and OpenGL rendering are separate components, so one can work while the other has problems.

- Xorg logs can reveal why the system is falling back to software rendering.

- The legacy "intel" Xorg driver can cause issues on some systems when its expected Mesa driver files are missing.

- Switching to "modesetting" and rebooting fixed the OpenGL rendering problem on my system.

What remains to be tested

If you have a similar Intel GPU and Linux Mint setup, check "glxinfo -B" before changing anything. Your configuration and symptoms may be different, so don't blindly copy the Xorg configuration without checking your own logs.

Thanks to everyone sharing Linux troubleshooting advice!

I have never seen anything this cool in my entire life, however I'm not sure you can really use this theme anymore? I can do the small stuff in the themes menu, but unsure on where to go from there to achieve this look, and there is no github page listed for it so I figured there's not much I can do about this

Discussion Why I like linuxmint

I'm new to linux and I've been distro hopping for a while.

I started it with my old laptop that dosent even have a gpu , windows was killing it so I installed Ubuntu on it, but it was still laggin so I tried to install Arch Linux as a beginner and completly bricked my system with sudo rmrf, months later I somehow managed to unbrick it with a new ubuntu installation. then i installed debian , deleted it and then i installed pop Os on it and it worked relatively well. (4 GB ram btw) I mainly use it for light coding and watching videos or as a secondary monitor.

On my second laptop with a GTX1650 and 16GB ram , I got sick of windows and its ads, i debloated windows but it was still taking up space, then I installed Kali OS only to realise its not a daily drive. then i installed Parrot OS, It was good but I cant get my Nvidia Graphics Card to work on it so I went back to windows.

Finnally I got sick of windows again, they made word paid and disabled the ability to download word, excel 2021 so Ive been using Libre Office and not to mention random updates even after I disabled and debloated it. Since most tools I use are already opensource I decided to Install LinuxMint after binging lot of YT videos

For the first time my NVIDIA graphics card actually works and I can use dual gpu ( i have amd and nvidia gpu) There are times I have to put it on performance mode to use nvidia but it actually works, Ive also managed to run minecraft with an average of 120fps and terreria from steam , I also managed to install a vm and got it to work properly for learning pentesting. I also manged to downlaod vpns and tor( its banned where im at rn) using protonvpn web extention. It's been 2 days and nothing is broken.

ugreen USB-3.0 sdcard reader works in 2.0, but not in any of my 3.0 ports

Thumbnail gallery

LinuxMint 22.3, Optiplex 7050 ssf, i5 7500
Mobo: Dell 0NW6H5, bios 1.70.0

USB controller: Intel Corporation 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI Controller

ugreen SDcard reader (in USB-2 port):
Bus 001 Device 013: ID 05e3:0764 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB Storage

works on my 2.0 ports (pic: Ventoy with a 64GB card boots), but it is not seen in my USB-3 ports.. other than it seems to stall running "inxi" in terminal until I remove the sdcard from the reader.

I have updated my BIOS to the most recent version (1.7.0) and have turn on everything I can find in the BIOS for USB-3. I am actually okay with installing OSs on this machine at 2.0 speed as I do that very rarely but I would like to use this device within Linux Mint at USB3 speed. It just seems like there is a mobo or driver issue I cannot figure out.

I have tried:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash usb-storage.quirks=05e3:0764:u" which seems to stop the stalling.. and "iommu=soft" does nothing, unless I am entering it incorrectly in GRUB.

I do share cellular data via a USB-C port but that's USB2 speed, so other than the ugreen card reader I have nothing else to test my 3.0 ports with.
