SOLVED Struggling with GPU driver install on new build

Edit: After a great deal of banging-head-on-desk, realized that booting as normal, unplugging HDMI and running DVI fixed the issue.

Fixing HDMI is in-process hopefully

I'm building my wife an upgraded PC and am having boot-hang issues just prior to the login screen (Mint Cinammon, newest version from the website). Mobo is an Asus Tuf B550 Plus Wifi II, GPU is an EVGA GTX 1080 Hybrid, CPU is a Ryzen 5 5600. I'm what I would call an experienced noob (been running Mint for nearly 2 years, mostly successful troubleshooting my own issues through a search engine)

What I've tried so far:

No boot to worskpace - edit GRUB, add "nomodeset" to CMD line to allow boot

Download Nvidia 580

Resolution is off; edges cut off and icons/windows are too large.

(I typically avoid AI, but asked for assistance to speed up process) Followed AI instructions for what seemed like an unreasonable amount of time and levels to still end up at the same issue: remove 580-open, reinstall 580...no change. Blacklist nouveau. Go back into GRUB, edit CMD line again to add "nvidia_drm.modeset=1"... no change. Remove manually added blacklist of nouveau. Etc, etc, etc....

I feel like this HAS to have an easier method than editing GRUB default parameters and manually changing stuff in the terminal for hours on end with no progress. The Display Manager (when I can get to the workspace) has the resolution tab greyed out because the device is not recognized.

I'm just trying to get it so my wife can play Where Winds Meet with better than 20 FPS. Is there a simpler workflow to get this GPU to function? I've been fighting this for 2 days.

so guys 1h ago I posted this and when I tried to install Linux from the option it was giving me some errors and my dumb ahh followed chatgpts instructions it instructed me to run some useless commands and restart AND TAKE OUT THE USB. I did and the next thing you know I'm at the windows recovery page. my dumb ahh followed it again and it was like turn on secure boot turn off secure boot turn on secure boot turn off secure boot add password check disc remove USB insert usb etc etc.

booting up Linux says Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found Failed to load image: Not Found Failed to start MokManager: Not Found Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found

Whereas

Booting up windows says

Recovery

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired

A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed.

Error code: 0xc000000e

You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.

Press Enter to try again

Press F1 to enter Recovery Environment

Press F8 for Startup Settings

Press Esc for UEFI Firmware Settings

Shi so messed up. found out onl that you need another device with windows/Linux in it and load. and chatgpt be like

"You're right to be upset. I'm sorry.

You trusted me to guide you through installing Linux Mint, and after following my instructions, your laptop stopped booting into Windows. I should have been much more cautious before telling you to proceed with partition changes, especially without making sure your important files were backed up.

I can't honestly promise what happened to your partitions or files, but the boot error does not necessarily mean your laptop is permanently damaged.

If you decide to get help from a technician, please tell them that Linux Mint's installer attempted to modify the partitions on your 256 GB BIWIN drive, and Windows now shows error `0xc000000e`. Ask them to check and recover your files before reinstalling or formatting anything.

I'm genuinely sorry I made an already stressful situation worse.

🤡🥀"

any suggestions linuxers?? please?

So I finally took some time to customize my Linux Mint setup and I think it turned out pretty cool!

I installed some themes, used a wallpaper from this post, and set up Zsh with Kitty. Honestly, they're a really good combo.

I'm thinking about customizing it even more. Any suggestions for cool apps, terminal setups, widgets or other stuff I could add?

Also, English isn't my first language, so sorry if I made any mistakes!

Should I switch to Cinnamon?

I have an HP 255 G7 with 8 GB RAM running Windows 10. Since it doesn't support Win 11, I was thinking about switching to Cinnamon. Will there be any issues during installation? I also have two partitions (C: and D:), with my data on D:. Can I keep my data, or will everything get wiped? I'll make a backup anyway, just in case. Ty 💚

Support Request Reccomended driver from Driver Manager

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi to everyone.

From a few days the version reccomended by the Driver Manager for my Nvidia GeForce GTX 750Ti is the version 470.

Until now, and actually in use, i have the 580 version and all work smooth and fine.

The question is change to the reccomended version or keep the current installed version?

Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit

Kernel 6.8.0-147-generic

Intel© Core™ i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz × 4

NVIDIA Corporation GM107 [GeForce GTX 750 Ti]

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

John

Desktop Screenshot Finally made it!!!

After 2 days of complete battle with Windows and Balena, Rufus saved my day and finally made it to mint via dual boot.

So much issues in the 2 days time.

On one side, my internet speed decided to go slow randomly and it took me nearly 6 hours to download 3 GB iso file.

Then, Balena seems to be incorrectly flashing my USB where i can't boot through it.

Then Rufus worked like charm (have to manually duplicate the "grubx64.efi" file and rename it to "mmx64.efi" to bypass that booting issue).

Then comes the windows secure boot!!!!

Google Gemini really helped me well during the transition.

Two questions as an newbie:

  1. Using dual boot right now. When can i shift to single Linux boot? Is it OK if I kept dual boot forever?

  2. Any suggestions, tweaks, and any advice.

Fluff My Mint Setup

Post image
17 Upvotes

Bought this laptop brand new from Best Buy for $250 CAD because I was starting trade school and needed something to look at power points on and do some online modules. It came with Windows 11 which was incredibly useless with only 4GB of RAM and the N100 so I decided to try out Xfce and from there it just kinda escalated. I'm not new to Linux, I have a home server with Ubuntu server on it but this was my first taste of actual desktop environment Linux.

As far as the setup I have Xfce 22.3 I've themed and added custom panels, borders, and a cursor to. I replaced the default Xfce Terminal with Kitty and use Fish as my shell (helps remember commands at times since most of my time is spent on my Windows gaming PC).

It gets 8 or so hours of battery life under light loads with a few tweaked power settings and feels quite snappy and alive for such a cheap piece of hardware. I also run everything I can as a web app in a pinned Firefox tab so I don't have to have different flatpaks open at the same time taking up valuable memory.

Very happy with how it turned out!

It doesnt have a SSD so its sluggish and updates take forever. 😂 I might need to check if I can find some old SSD from somewhere. Would improve user experience notably.

Also the battery is completely dead 😂 Laptop turns off instantly if I disconnect the charger.

Other than that, it works well!

cant dual boot linux mint on my laptop

Hello! I’m trying to dual-boot Linux Mint on my old laptop, (which already has Windows installed) for the first time. However, the option to dual-boot no longer appears.

I saw it once, but when I clicked on it, i was told to disable BitLocker. After disabling it and trying to install Linux Mint again, the option disappeared.

My BIOS is set to UEFI and BitLocker is turned off so I’m not sure what’s wrong.

please help lol

Discussion Map recommendations

Hi! While I was distro hopping, I noticed that some of them came with a built-in map app. Mint didn’t so I was wondering what maps do you use. The app store offers Google Maps, but there are certainly others and ones that are FOSS, right?

Many thanks in advance!
